If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek. Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.
Everyone art journals differently. Art journaling doesn't have any rules. Or perhaps, as the line from Grease goes, "The rules are…there ain't no rules." I usually create in a bound journal and I usually journal on my pages. But that's not the only way to art journal. In the examples I'm sharing today, I used single sheets of watercolor paper. These pages were created to show off some of my new stencil designs. I wanted to keep them (relatively) clean and not make them too personal — so that other people can envision themselves using the stencils on their own projects. These could later be bound into a journal, or not.
Some nice things about working on single pages: you can use a lot of dimension, you don't have to worry about drying time, you can easily Gelli Print on them, you have no "leak through" concerns, and you can stitch on them quite easily.
One of the things that's tough for me when I work "clean" and don't make the pages personal is knowing when they're done. It's a balancing act to find that place where it feels completed when I'm working in this style.
Take a peek and let me know what you think of this style of art journaling!
How do you create art journal pages? Single? In a bound book? With lots of journaling? With no journaling at all? I'd love to know!
Thanks for stopping by!
P.S. The stencils I used are:

In a bound book with some journaling but often a quote that suits my mood. The page with the numbered tags jumps out at me. I would want to journal under the tags and use them as flaps.

I am working in an altered book. I chose it to beat my blank page anxiety. And this really helped.I don’t journal at all but i use few words in big bold letters to express how i feel, what i think.

Love your pages. Also would like to say how much I am enjoying “Scrapsoup” on the Create station. It’s long over due for shows featuring paper crafting. Thanks to your sponsors and your guest for a show paper crafters, who are in the thousands, can learn from. So thank you!

I don’t “journal” on pages. I don’t really care for writing on my pages. I like to use loose pages because I like to sew on them. I just don’t know the best way to bind them together, other than hole punching on the side. I like to try new techniques/supplies on my pages and I do have several bound journals for that purpose. Thanks for a great site.

I rarely write on my art journal pages, and when I do, it’s to note some detail of the medium or subject for future reference. I use bound journals, wire-bound mixed media tablets, loose pages, composition books; whatever strikes my fancy at the time. The loose pages Julie posted today are wonderful! I love that Julie is never afraid to use color combinations that might give pause to others. The layering is always a treat!

I like the stencils. As far as using them, and what you have done with them, I do not have an opinion. I am still trying to understand the use of stencils in this fashion. So I enjoy this blog and seeing what you do with your journaling.

I love the fish stencil. I haven’t got that one yet. I have worked on single unattached sheets for a while and they’ve just piled up everywhere. I finally signed up for your Junque Journal class, though, and I’m SO excited to have something to do with them all. 🙂

It’s beautifull..I love the colors and I am very curious what you will bring us. I’ve been working for several months in my art journal but also large images such as wood .

I usually journal in bound journals but two weeks ago I came upon some sort of old encyclopedia in folders and I thought I’d give it a try as a journal. I find it gives me more freedom and I quite love it. When I decide a page is finished I return it to the folder. I hardly ever write journaling. If I do it will be some sort of title or short comment or I choose a word that I repeat several times on the page.

I like your personal journals better! 🙂 I usually keep a bound sketchbook-Journal in which I draw and color the pages following my urge to doodle and say something to question, to explain things, to remember, and to reference later. I also use loose papers for exercise in mixing colors and abstract painting. Then I fold and stitch these abstract pages like a folio and use the white side as sketchbook-journal. Enjoyed your posts. Thank You.

I love quotes, use them often on my pages. I write my innermost thoughts when the mood strikes. I like loose pages for learning new techniques and of course in classes. I recently bought a presentation journal to place them all in, and plan to label each pages. I have random thought and paint journals, and themed journals.

I agree with whoever said your personal pages are best! 🙂 It’s fun seeing your one-page-wonders too!
I think it’s fun to make printy pages then bind them together into a colorful journal. I’ve made several at this point and love looking at them! One day I hope to put them to good use! 🙂 The two I actually ended up using are the less exciting ones (at the start) – b/c I filled them up with plenty of blank lined, graph and ledger papers for the writing part.
My art journals that I actually “work” in are the bound watercolor paper journals you buy in a store. I find that I create more images and write journal entries less – but that’s ok with me 🙂 My art expresses my feelings just fine without words!
I love making single printed pages for other uses beyond the journaling, making envelopes out of them, handmade postcards and greeting cards, and sometimes writing a letter on.

Beautiful pages!
I have so many journals and I pick whatever I’m feeling like that day. Most of the time I use only watercolors or watercolor crayons/pencils just to make it quick and don’t run my working table too much….you know, not all of us are lucky enough to have an art studio where they can leave the painting stuff all over the place and come back later to continue the pages or canvas or just to put things where they belong.
