Today I've got another installment of my "Exploring Art Supplies" series. On instagram I noticed that gwenaval was using the FlexCut cutters and talking about how much she loved them. From time to time I've looked at other cutters, but they can be very expensive (hundreds of dollars). This set was a little more than $50, so I decided to take the risk.
Watch the video to learn how I feel about the FlexCut Micro-Palm Set of cutters:
And here's the stamp I carved in the video:
Do you have a carving tool that you love? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to know what you use and if you love it!
Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for this, Julie. I, too, am looking for tools that will give finer lines. Well, I won’t be buying these now! 🙂

Love the video. Have you done a video carving with syringes? I may have missed it if you did. What’s your feeling on carving with them if you have? I’m looking for something that will give me finer lines than the smallest Speedball.
Thanks Julie

It looks like the Flexcut blade is straighter than the curving tip on the speedball. If so, that would explain why it tends to gouge straight down into the surface, rather than skimming along the top. Also, Julie, did I see you pushing the blade toward your other hand?!?! Dangerous, Girl!

Yikes s, don’t carve towards yourself. You may be all to safely do that but newbies will most likely hurt themselves!!

Hello and thanks for the video.
I hate changing the tips so I purchased 5 Speedball handles and have attached a different tip in each one. Makes carving a lot easier and faster.
In my collection, I have 2 tools that are shallow similar to the ones you show and I find them hard to carve the pink stamp stuff because they keep wanting to go too deep (now I know that they are wood carving tools).
Thank you for inspiring me to get back into stamp carving. Suzanne McNeill

Thanks for sharing. I also like carving with ceramic tools, they have different gouge widths.

Love seeing your take on these! I’ll admit, I have found that the Flexcut are a bit more difficult to use on the Speedy Carve – I’ve gotten much better with that combination, but only after a lot of practice! They tend to work better on a less elastic rubber… I use them mostly with Moo Carve (which a lot of people really dislike, but I love it!) But like you said – it’s definitely a personal preference! You’ve got to just use what you love and what works for you 🙂

I love my Flex tools! I also love my mini carvers that come from MicroMark. I teach carving classes from time to time, so I am a tool junkie. Students get the Speedball tips, though! Those other tols are too pricey to supply! Flex tools makes a sharpening kit, too, which is useful to have–I hate dull tools!

I like all tools. Most of what I use is from Ashley Iles. I like their tools a lot, they are less expensive than some others because we import directly from them, they have a huge range, and Barry and Tony and Ray Iles are friends of mine. They are also fabulous tools to use and feel really good in the hand. Barry has 40 years of toolmaking under his belt. If you click on MET – the last button on the menu bar https://www.carvingtoolsguide.com/best-wood-carving-tools/ we have some fine videos of Barry and Tony making carving and turning tools. We also stock Two Cherries tools which is also a fine brand and some people like one brand better than the other. It’s a personal preference
