I'm delighted to bring you another episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast!

If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link.  You can listen to a podcast anywhere and at any time.  It is a recording that is available to you whenever you'd like to listen.  If you'd like to download it to your iTunes library, click here.  You can also pause and rewind or fast forward as you desire.  I like to listen to podcasts while I'm making art.  It's a little like hanging out with friends while you art.

Mom and I recorded a multi-part pre-move podcast and now we are happy to share our multi-part post-move podcast!  Here are a few photos:

On the podcast we discuss how I feel in my new space, my new workflow, unpacking, physical labor, joining the local arts community, missing NYC, and towards the end we kind of wander off into a lengthy discussion about contemporary art and the ability to draw.  I hope you'll come along for the ride and give the podcast a listen!

Be sure to leave us your comments and questions!  We'd love to add your voice to the conversation!

  • I enjoyed hearing your take on letting go of things you don’t enjoy and the guilt associated with art supplies you might use but don’t. It was also interesting to hear about what you miss from NY and what you like in your new surroundings. Now we need to see pictures of your two studios and more info on the wet and dry.

  • Organizing art supplies is an ongoing topic in the 2 art groups I belong to. We all have difficuties in keeping order in a room with painting and printng, jewelry and beads, fabric and sewing, assemblage, bookmaking, and scrapooking going on all at once. I loved those mesh drawers you had in your NY apartment….did those make the move with you or have you come up with something even better?

  • So glad to hear you sound much more relaxed at the end of the podcast in comparison to right after the move(the beginning of the podcast.)It seems you were finally able to decide to part with some supplies – always a tough decision. In the future, you might consider not the past cost of acquiring the supplies to try some new craft, but instead, the cost of holding onto the supplies (storage, maintenance, will they deteriorate in time even if they are unused, etc.) Good luck to you in your new home!

  • I love all your podcasts, but your “move” podcasts are my favorite. You and your mom are so authentic in sharing the stresses, hopes, and even heartbreak in the process of moving. The questions you posed and answered the best you could are fascinating.

  • I feel honored that you discussed my comment. Some days, I just need that creative input from a museum, the outdoors, whatever strikes my fancy. Thanks for the moving house insights and other chit chat. As always, you leave me thinking and ready to create.

  • LOVE chats with you and your mom!! Makes me miss mine even more! She was one of the only people I could have these “art talks” with — that “got” what I do for a living! Oh – and I tried the wet and dry studios separation too — I ended up moving most of it back to the wet studio through use and busy-ness — and never taking the time to move it back to it’s “place” in the dry studio! haha. Now the only thing in the other studio is shipping/packaging supplies – and overstock supplies. Hope it goes better for you!

  • Very fascinating! Esp. as I am packing up to move. Great insight as to what my priorities should be and those little things that can trip you up. I need a list, I think, of everything to research ahead of time. I had already started looking online for places to go walking, car repair shops, and craft stores. But the list is rather endless actually. We do tend to take things for granted. The biggest mistake I made last time was not getting a new drivers license right away. And new tags for my car. The insight into your studios and their organization was interesting too. But also your experience with the movers brought back old memories. They are my biggest worry. I do think moving to a neighborhood with some space and some quiet allows for greater reflection. Deeper thoughts perhaps. There is some truth to stopping and smelling the roses. But you have to have roses first. And clean air. I am moving to a cheaper part of the country and am hoping for a difference in people’s priorities. Sending you best wishes for your new life.

  • So happy to hear that you are settling in. The worst is over! Just listening to you talk about your move and some of the frustration brought back for me the trauma of our move 3 years ago. We only moved 5 minutes away from our old home but it felt like a million miles! Purging, packing, moving, then unpacking was so draining! I feel like it was worth it, but it was so difficult at the time to manage all the balls that were in the air. I now have a dedicated studio space, which is wonderful!
I can also relate to your decisions about hanging art. I have hung very little of what we had up at our old home. I am finding I like to rotate some things so I haven’t really gotten rid of anything. I do have an art trade arranged with a sculptor friend. I am trading one of my large elaborate cross stitch botanicals for one of her pieces. It’s a fun way to barter for something new!
Wishing you luck as you finish unpacking. Hope you can find what you need when you need it!

  • Julie and Eileen! I’m in Italy for this fall and when I get home I will be doing a giant clear-out in my studio. When you were talking about your art that you have decided not to hang (etc.) I thought you should have a silent auction…just like that – I also loved hearing your insights in the taking apart and putting together of your different lives via location. Great podcast – and I got one whole holiday card finished – good thing I’m not sending too many!lol
