I don't know what you found inspiring, but here are some of the things that I'm taking away from Quilt Festival:

  • Buttons and beads are awesome.  I loved the quilts that used embellishments.
  • Perfectly square quilts are not necessarily the norm.  I was thrilled to see so many quilts with wavy, wonky, decorative, and curved edges!
  • Thoughtful design goes all the way down to the details.  The quilts I was most impressed with improved with continued viewing.  It may have been the initial image that pulled me in, but they all had thoughtful details that added to the overall effect.
  • Innovative classics are so cool.  There were a lot of classic quilt designs that people made fresh again through color, pattern, scale, etc.  I was particularly enamored with an exhibit of double wedding ring pattern quilts.  The same pattern over and over again with such different results!
  • I'm not going to say big is better, but big is impactful.  In my painting and collage work I've started to work larger.  Large scale work allows for so much more play than small scale work.  I really loved standing in front of the huge quilts.  They were incredibly powerful.

I hope you've enjoyed this three-day journey to Quilt Festival!  And for those of you in the U.S., Happy Thanksgiving!!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Thank you so much, Julie! While I don’t make quilts, I greatly admire those who do. Especially when they make such fabulous specimens. Your photos were equally fabulous!

  • Oh my. Gorgeously amazing art. I used to be more of a quilter before I got intense with paper crafts. But I’d never have time to develop quilting into an art in the same manner as painting, printing and collage. Maybe not the patience either. But I continue to be tremendously inspired by quilting and the philosophy I thinknit shares with mixed media collage: how all scraps are needed and how they transform when they are combined with different elements.

  • Thanks so much for sharing images of my quilts! They are the two silhouettes with the tree and the ladder in the figure with all the hand stitching. I loved creating those quilts and was thrilled to see them on the show floor at Festival. Cheers! Deborah Boschert
