As you know, I try to share my art journaling pages on this blog every single Friday. Well, today is no exception! I’m delighted to share two art journaling pages with you that both started with images cut and pasted from magazines.
You can use magazines in your art journal for inspiration, collage fodder, to create stencils, as foundation images, and so much more! My favorites magazines to use (at the moment — ask me again tomorrow) are Glamour, Vogue, and W.
Today I’m sharing two art journal pages that use magazine images as foundation images.
Using Magazine Images as Foundation Images
This is a simple process with lots of room for personal expression and exploration:
- Choose an image that appeals to you. You can cut around the image or use the whole page.
- Use a wet adhesive, such as gel medium, to securely glue the image into your journal. Let dry.
- Embellish the image as you wish.
Some suggestions from me:
- Change the colors of the image.
- Add shading to the image.
- Add pattern to the image.
- Add features such as antennae or elf ears.
- Turn a person into an animal.
- Turn an animal into a person.
- Continue an image that is cut off.
- Add text to the image.
My Art Journaling Pages

The right side of this spread is made up of painted doodles I simply couldn’t bear to paint over, so I left it.
I’ve been using markers a lot in my art journal and these two spreads are no exception.
You can see that I outlined the magazine images on both pages with a black line. What looks like paint on the images is actually just marker.
Below you can see some homemade tape. As I was cleaning out my studio to move I found it and decided to stick it into my journal instead of packing it. I love that my journal becomes a place that I can keep all my precious things and give them life instead of simply storing them away.
It’s so fun to stash photos in my art journal! This black and white photo strip is a great addition to this colorful page.
In Conclusion:
Magazine imagery can be a great starting point for your art journaling pages! I think you can learn lots of great lessons from painting and drawing on top of them. I hope you feel inspired to rip out a few magazine pages, glue them into your art journal, and have a bit of a play!
