I'm delighted to bring you another episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast!

Our guest today is Jessica Sporn:

Jessica Sporn, former actress, lawyer and activist – now artist and mother, has been drawing and painting for as long as she can remember.

I am One 500 Sporn

She hosts a successful Meet-Up group with monthly classes in her Montclair studio, and also teaches at The Ink Pad in New York City, and Art-Is-You Mixed Media Retreats, as well as in online classes.

Sporn Art Demos 500
Her designs may be found worldwide on greeting cards, fabrics, and tabletop ceramics.

Jessica Sporn Designs Logo Small
Jessica is proud to design stencils for Stencil Girl Products, stamps for Rubbermoon, and Judaica products for Aviv Judaica.

Sporn Faces 500
Jessica keeps an active Facebook page, regularly blogs, and is represented for licensing by Creative Connection, Inc.

On the podcast we discuss menorahs, the theatre, yoga, Jessica's career evolution, teaching, learning, improvisation, creating for a result vs. creating for the process and so much more!  It's a very thoughtful and philosophical show!  I'd really like to share some listener mail on the next podcast, so I hope you'll leave a comment on today's podcast!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Hearing about Jessica’s product design process was so interesting…both the inspiration/instruction on desired end result from a client & the actual artistic step-by-step she goes through to generate an end product. I was especially intrigued by how she has to deal with perhaps competing demands of the client’s original wishes and the details/constraints of the manufacturing process for a given type of item. Anyways, all of that is to say it made me want to hear more about how your product design process goes, Julie, and how you negotiate the different considerations of company client/end user/manufacturing process that you have to juggle along the way. Plus the artistic nitty gritty of how you turn a general starting idea into an actual product/deliverable. Would love to hear more! Thanks for yet another intriguing & inspiring podcast.

  • Another great podcast. Jessica’s comment about not writing in her art journal resonated with me. I was struggling with art journaling because I have never been one to write down my feelings but I need to get those feelings out of me. My solution is to journal first then make art over the words. When I finish a journal, I will go through it and pull out the pages I like the most, then either create over the pages left in the book or discard it. My negative feelings aren’t left for my family to read if I drop dead and I’ve unloaded what I need to for myself. It works for me.
P.S. Body image was briefly mentioned regarding comparisons and the best thing I did to overcome my negative self image was to look through the ESPN Body Issue. It truly shows that fit bodies come in all shapes and sizes!

  • Loved the discussion at the beginning about your lettering class at The Ink Pad, because that’s how I found you and your site. My husband and I try to get to NYC once or twice a year and I was checking their class offerings for the next time we’re there. Alas, I could not be at the lettering class in person, but did the Getting Started with Lettering online class instead. I’ve been listening to archived podcasts and love you and your Mom and your guests. Today’s talk with Jessica might be my favorite yet – loved the theatre references, especially the musicals!

  • Another great podcast, Julie. Loved listening and learning more about Jessica’s process. Your mom cracked me up with her comment ‘the project isn’t finished yet.’ Good luck with the move!

  • That’s what I do so often Kae – paint over, or obscure, my journaling. I can still tell what I was feeling by looking at the artwork.
