Several months ago I took an outrageously expensive licensing class that I had to create some artwork for. I thought I'd share some of that artwork with you today.

Licensing is definitely something that I'm interested in. However, I pretty much came away from class with the sense that my work is not really what people are looking for. I'm very proud of all of these pieces but I think my taste is not mainstream taste. C'est la vie. I will simply keep working on creating art that I love!

I agree with every comment above. I especially liked the wallk art. The background was wonderful. If you think your designs are too busy you know how to use more white space, you taught me that. Your work is sellable. If you want it go for it, You can do anything. Ruth

Your designs are fresh, like no other, happy, etc. when you consider some of the other “licensed” products that are out there, your designs rock! I love the book cover. I am always looking for “my inner child” and the goats make me want to draw funny faces too.

Julie, I think your art Is VERY worthy of licensing and it is what the consumer would want. Have you looked at some of the items your counterparts are licensing? Your patterns are so intricate and at least for me visually pleasing. I would buy a plate or the wall hanging. If this is something you are truly passionate about, you should definitely pursue it.

I would definitely buy the wall art design if it was turned into a rayon fabric. That’s just the sort of thing that makes a really nice, drapy cover shirt or kimono shirt that I know I would never see anyone else wearing. I see a lot of your paintings that would make fabulous fabrics. Cotton or rayon preferred. 🙂

There’s a great group on Facebook called “Pattern Playground” where there are quite a few alumni from the class, and many of them have wildly different styles compared to what was praised in the reviews. You might be interested in checking it out. It’s very lively and encouraging, and there’s plenty of talk about which classes are good and which are not so good.

I don’t know if everything you do would work but I do believe your strong color palette and hand made patterns would work for more than you think. The perfect example is your fabric set above. Dear Julie, I am not a commenter but I read MANY blogs. I take it all in. I find that I must comment on this post because I highly and most respectfully disagree with you wholeheartedly.
If these items are for sale, I would like to know where… I would like to purchase the wall art and the storybook on The Three Billy Goats Gruff. I would also like to purchase the cell phone cover and the pencil bag in which I would be used exactly for my favorite pencils/art pens. I also would purchase both keyrings, pencils and depending if the plates are able to have food om them – I would purchase them as well. Short of not purchasing the fabric – and the only reason I would not purchase it is because I do not sew (not my cup of tea). Your art is phenomenal. If you put this online – perhaps it was that the storefront u used didn’t reach the right people!!!! I had to take the time to write this… You are an artist that I idolize. Just my two cents…. Not sure of this class or how you came to the conclusion that mainstream doesn’t like your work.. I bet you don’t have scientific proof of this!!!!! 🙂 I think if you took a poll – you would be very surprised at the results. Doe the class have a refund policy?
