from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every DayIf you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

Lately I have not been happy with my art journal pages.  I've been in a slump and every page makes me cringe.  I know that I'm going to show you these pages and you're going to say: "Julie, they're not as bad as you think."  At least, I hope you'll say that.  We are always our worst critics, right?  Anyway, there's no way to get through a slump other than slogging on through it.  And so I continue to art journal in the hope that better pages are in my future.

Here is what I've been up to.  Be kind, please.  :)

This page features lots of tags stamped with hand carved stamps.  Actually, lots of hand carved stamps in general!

As you know, my Junque Journals are made from all kinds of junque.  This particular journal has several pages from a Picasso wall calendar.  When I put the pages from the calendar into my journal, most of them were cut off in some way.  When I come upon these Picasso paintings (like the one above) in my journal, I try to finish off the painting in a way that fools the eye into not seeing that it's actually cut off.  In the detail photos below see if you can detect the transition points!

Lots more stamping:

And a bit of hand lettering:

You've definitely seen pieces of this page come together over time.  I painted the background when I did the review of Amsterdam Standard Acrylics and I added the two-tone circle when I shared the Sakura Solid Marker Hack.  Now you can see what the final spread ended up evolving into.

  • I love that you continue to journal even when it’s not turning out the way you want. I did a page awhile ago that I HATED, so before I wrote any journaling on it, I painted a giant red X across the entire spread and did messy block lettering saying, ‘I don’t like how this page turned out.’ Then I turned the page and started something else!
I like your pages and am thankful you’re sharing the good and the ‘bad’ (although I like them just as much as others you’ve posted!!).

  • I agree with Merideth. Also I think you should give yourself a tremendous amount of credit for your CONSISTENCY! The pages may not excite you, but maybe you needed them more for journaling and brain dumping than you needed them for artwork. Allso give yourself credit for all the other work you are accomplishing that you may not appear in your journal that you are pleased with. I appreciate that you blog every day, so THANK YOU! Jeanine, aka Teacher’s Pet. I too always enjoy your pages.

I hate when the mojo just isn’t feeling good. Your pages are so very full & I love your style, sometimes pushing through is all there is to do. I rarely share my mojoless stuff…YOU are brave and kind to share and show us all that it happens. Thanks for sharing!

  • Julie, I adore your hand-carved stamps and admire that you can write so much in them! Of course I think they are beautiful! I am usually at a loss for words, while the images come much easier to me. Thanks for the link party! happy Friday!

  • I love your I HATE THIS PAGE. You have been so into the stamps that I think you probably are just heavily concentrated in that area right now. The only difference in the stamp pages is that they aren’t your usual flamboyant pages but you are recording stamps. You have been awfully busy from what I have seen on your pages and Instagram. Just keep slapping that paint on and don’t worry about it. I love all your things.

  • I think that pages you do for yourself, as opposed to work done for a client, a swap, or a class sample are exactly what you needed to do at that moment.
You may feel your art mojo was MIA, but your writing mojo sure wasn’t. You needed to get words on paper, and you did. So, mission accomplished, pages a success.

  • I so appreciate your honesty. You have been full speed ahead constantly teaching and creating and developing so many things, stamping, stencils, mugs, etc. Maybe you just needed to have a resting place to just be in your journal and express words without an end product. It seems to me that your journaling needed some space to just use words with some stamping. Sometimes it is about the process and not about the product. WE are so hard on ourselves!. We need to remember to be kind and gentle with ourselves. Namaste

  • Julie, you are absolutely the most amazing person I have run into yet as it comes to sticking to something. Don’t beat yourself up. You are 20 times more busy than most of us, and yet you still get the words and art out there. Actually, words are an art form. If words are all youcan get down for the day, that is an accomplishment in itself. You are way ahead of me and it looks like way ahead of most of us. None, the less, I appreciate hearing your concerns, it helps me feel more normal myself. You are turly an inspiration!

  • I read something about keeping inspired through a dry spell recently and it advised to do something different, yet creative. Go somewhere inspiring, and admire the beauty or fun. Look at things that truly inspire you, such as a favorite artist’s work. Look at it in a new way, really study it. Also, try cooking something simply beautiful. Creativity in the kitchen is good for the soul. Maybe use prepainted pages and just get some writing done to download the junk on your mind. Hope you continue to push through. And yes, these pages are great, especially the circle one!

  • I’ve noticed over the years that my children and now my grandchildren have a period of “ugly” feelings just before a growth spurt. I’ve measured them continually over the years every few weeks and know that growth is not gradual but jumps up 1/4 to 1/2 inch in a week just after they have been noticeably not fun to be around. (I have lived with my g-kids since they were born and mark my door jams with height.) Having noticed this, I assume that lots of things grow in this way – seemingly overnight. So, when “not-feeling-it” I have to assume I’m getting ready to really grow – hopefully mentally and not horizontally LOL. The only way to go through this is to keep on keeping on. You are a constant source of inspiration like the Suwannee River flowing nearby my home in Florida, sometimes you flood up and sometimes you dry down. Depends on the rain in Georgia not on its ability to be a river. Sometimes even the Mississippi changes course so be open to whatever flood gate opens up to you – wild exciting rides await.

  • You’re doing what great teachers do — modeling the behavior that you want your students to adopt. In this case, continuing the practice of creativity even when you don’t love what you’re making. If you hadn’t told me (us) that you didn’t like these pages, I would’ve noticed your stamping (because I love, love, love your handmade stamps), your Picasso face, and your bright colors. I think what stands out most to me, since you *did* mention it, is that the page designs seem a little less cohesive than others. Which, by the way, is what every single art journal page I’ve ever made suffers from. lol 😉

  • As a non writer I give you credit for all the journaling you do. It is impressive. So I wonder about giving yourself a challenge… journal your thoughts only in graphic form… drawings, pictures, photos, whatever. You could also put order to them, as in what you did during the day. You could use drawings etc. that emote what was happening…excitement while speaking with someone, busyness while cleaning, tiredness, funkiness. Or try any other change up to challenge yourself. I think a new major journal challenge is what you need.

  • Hi Julie–Give yourself a break during this “lost mojo” time. Your pages look just fine. I wish I could write my thoughts and feelings in my journals the way you do so consistently. I recently lost my painting mojo because the two children that lived next door (and who came over almost every day) moved to Texas with their wonderful family. I missed them so much since we saw each other a lot for more than five years. I am now visiting with them in Dallas so I’m hoping that I can start painting the blank canvas on my easel when I return home next week. However, I’ve been coloring in my Dover coloring books and creating cool color combinations (and crying periodically), but that’s better than nothing I guess.

  • Love your Picasso! Not to worry about your so-called “slump”–you have been really busy, and are probably a bit tired. And those pages are not as bad as you think. Really.

  • As a retired art teacher I have a few insights. My last job was in Middle School where all students spent too much time hating – their cloths, hair, skin, friends, and in my class; their art.
My advice to the struggling artists was “EMBRACE THE UGLY!” Work (even ugly work) is progress and progress moves you forward.
Next: put the ugly aside for a period of time.
When you return to your artwork try to identify a center of interest, a visual pathway and color scheme. It’s a great starting place for figuring out what is bothering you.
    Hope this helps!

  • I agree with Lynda above and a lot of the other comments. I nk for whatever reason you are not satisfied with your work, that you are in transition. Your mind is searching for something it is not seeing in your work. Patience with yourself and you will find it. It always shows up. Besides, all this is beautiful at least to me.

  • I like the simplicity. I know that is different for you but I find it calmly refreshing. Your “normal” pages are great, too, but sometimes it is OK to do something less intense and focus more on the words and the “slogging through” than to make “wonderful” pages. It is also good to see that someone as prolific as yourself in your journal also has days like I do. I find that very reassuring for myself. Thank you for being real and sharing things as they are instead of making us think that you are “on” all the time. It is very encouraging to those of us that can’t always “keep up” in our journals as we might like. 🙂

It is very encouraging to those of us that can’t always “keep up” in our journals as we might like. 🙂

  • I like the simplicity. I know that is different for you but I find it calmly refreshing. Your “normal” pages are great, too, but sometimes it is OK to do something less intense and focus more on the words and the “slogging through” than to make “wonderful” pages. • As you can see from all the other comments that we all love your work, feel your pain, have been or are in your shoes, and that we all know there is going to be something spectacular coming from you soon. As Mary W said there is going to be growth spurt coming and we are waiting to see what form your art will take in the future. So don’t dispair. We are here for you.

  • I love that you share the pages that you are not as happy with. Showing up when the mojo is gone is always tough but such an important lesson. It is motivation to keep going and art journal even when our pages don’t feel as good to us as we hope. I am a fairly new reader here but could spend hours getting lost in your inspiration. Thank you for sharing so much and for hosting the link party!

  • Sometimes an art journal page is more about the journaling than about the arting. Since we can’t (and shouldn’t) see what you wrote, only you can tell whether the pages accomplished what they were meant to. Thanks for continuing to share!

  • You are an amazing, inspiring, and gifted artist. I admire how you doggedly pursue your dreams. Thank you for sharing the ups and downs of that journey. You are admired and supported from all over the world and, more specifically, a small town in Oregon.
