from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every DayIf you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

I started a new art journal at the end of May (it's not the wood burned one I shared last week — that one is next in line).  Today I thought I'd share the first few pages from that journal.

I approached the end papers a bit differently on this one.  I just started gluing in leftover bits and bobs.

You may recall that I blogged about this journal page I created for Scrapbook Soup.  It was a loose sheet of paper rather than bound into a journal, so I simply glued it into my journal so it wouldn't get lost.

The "title" and photos were extras from this scrapbook page I also created for Scrapbook Soup:

I hate wasting perfectly good bits and bobs!  So they have to get glued into my journal.

This is something new I've started doing.  While I've always dated my entries, I've rarely included the year.  And now I'm at the point where I have enough journals so that I can't remember what year journals are from.  So, I've started putting the year on the end papers — either at the beginning or end of the journal.

For whatever reason, I always feel like the first entry in my art journal is awkward.  I don't know why.  But it is.  So, here it is:

This funny little owl was inspired by the owl stamp I used along the bottom edge of the page.

I couldn't bear to throw away that tiny pretty scrap of patterned paper, so it found a happy home in my art journal!

I pulled words from this dictionary page that I felt applied to me and wrote them around the edge of the clipping.

This page has a little flippy insert page.  The front is a photograph of a sign from the Yoko Ono exhibit at MoMA that inspired the black scripty quote.  The back is two leftover bits of painted fabric.

They're the leftovers from this project I shared almost exactly a year ago.

This is junk mail.  Seriously. I got a postcard in the mail from Gudrun Sjöden announcing a sale and this flower was on it.

Do you know where this ruffle is from?  If you said, the layout I shared earlier in this post, you're right!  I love that everything finds a home in my art journal!

  • I especially like the LO elevator selfies. You’ve got me taking them in the mirror of fancy bathrooms. I recently felt the need to explain at a wedding reception that I’m a scrapbooker (when I “got caught”).

  • Hi, Julie, love the views of your journals that you share. I have a question about pens. I have been doing backgrounds in both watercolor and acrylic paints. I am having trouble with my pens when I try to write or doodle on top of the backgrounds. The pens stop writing almost as if the points are getting loaded with gunk from the backgrounds. I have used Sharpie pens, Sharpie fine point markers, Pigma Micron in assorted widths and several others. What sort of pens do you prefer for the journaling on your pages?

  • Here’s a post I wrote all about pens: http://balzerdesigns.typepad.com/balzer_designs/2013/10/art-journal-every-day-pen-talk.html
I no longer use felt tip pens in my journal because they don’t work for me. I always look for ballpoint or metal nib based pens. My favorite pen is no longer sold in the U.S. I have a small stockpile, but I’ve been eyeing this one: http://amzn.to/1TqbK9D and this one: http://amzn.to/1TqbO9y to order and try out soon!
