So, I went to my local art supply store for a wooden dowel.
I came home with more than a wooden dowel.
Are you surprised? I wasn't. :)
I bought two tubes of a new-to-me brand of acrylic paints: Amsterdam Standard Acrylics. Amsterdam does have a fancier brand called "Amsterdam Expert Acrylics." Watch the video for my explorations and analysis:
It's the hot pink that made me take it home with me! Here's the journal spread and the tags from the video:
Do you use Amsterdam Standard Acrylics? What do you think? Similar to Liquitex Basics?
Thanks for stopping by!

Julie, I love these product tutorials, really helps understand the products and their use differences. Thanks so much

Thanks for the info Julie. It’s really good to know what it can do. I have not heard of the Amsterdam brand here in Australia, but saying that, I am no means an expert on paint. 😉

Thanks, Julie. Love to hear about new and / or different products. The tags make great color catagorizers, too.

Thanks Julie – this was incredibly informative. I like that they are fast drying for journal work. I haven’t been using acrylic paint all that long and I’ve only recently started art journaling and I find it frustrating when I have to wait for acrylic paint to dry on the paper. I don’t mind using my heat gun but I hate how it makes the paper curl sometimes. And now I know some great little tests to do with new paint brands.

I got a tube of the Amsterdam Expert in Turquoise Green because I loved the color so much. I think the attraction for me is the brightness of the colors in the Amsterdam line. The Expert is considered a heavy body but is more transparent than the Liquitex heavy body and it is super fast drying. I quit using it to do gelli prints because there was more color on the plate than on the paper.

I really like Amsterdam paints — olive green light is my go to colour. I have recently fallen in love with their turquoise green. And I have all of their neon colours!

Thank you Julie! Always so helpful to hear about products I don’t know. I just want to tell you that I am building my own web site right now and it is giving me even more appreciation for just how much info. you have packed here into yours! It is easily accessible and inviting. Mine has a very different style (as I have so little to put on it so far, I am going for streamlined!) but I just have even more admiration for you at this moment!
And I see that you still have eco paints too. I love mine and will be so sad when they’re gone. Wish there were another good eco paint out there.

Thanks for your opinion Julie. I have not tried them (yet). Liquitex is my go-to paint. I have been disappointed in my eco paints. No matter how hard I shake them they are still too runny for my pages.

What a great tutorial Julie – very helpful. Wonder how Pebeo compares to Amsterdam. It’s a more transparent/iridescent type paint. Haven’t tried Amsterdam but will now! Love your journal page… so fun! Thanks bunches for all you do for us – love when you explore products!! j.

I have the Amsterdam paints in neon pink, orange, and green, I don’t think Golden or Liquitex offers anything quite like those.
I find overall that neon paints are quite transparent, especially the violets.

what a fun informational video, thanks! 🙂 i use liquitex basics, too, and i always find them more affordable and easier to find than the amsterdam brand. i think they are very similar in quality. and i, too, LOVE amsterdam’s neon pink! (all their neons, actually!) not as nice as golden, but a lot more affordable and just perfect for art journaling and printmaking.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I have been debating with myself whether or not I need these!( they are not readily available where I live) after seeing your video I have decided I probably do not as I have Liquitex basics, Eco, Pebeo etc except perhaps any colours I don’ t have in other brands! Please continue with your art supplies series it is so useful.
