I use a wide variety of paint…
…but my two most used brands are Golden Fluid Acrylics…
…and Liquitex Basics.
I don’t know about you, but I have been known, on more than one occasion, to buy the same paint color over and over. I also am somewhat unaware of what I have. I find myself reaching for blue, but which blue?
Both problems have such an easy solution: make paint swatches.
I went online to Liquitex & Golden’s websites and found color charts. Neither site had a printable color chart that really worked for my needs. I ended up cropping and enlarging the one from Liquitex and copying and pasting the one from Golden into a Word document. I filled both out with the colors I had and slipped them into page protectors (the Golden chart is two-sided).
The Liquitex colors are arranged alphabetically…
…while the Golden colors are arranged by, well, color.
Both styles work, but I will admit I like seeing the small differences in the colors right up against each other on my swatch chart, as in the blues above.
All in all, this makes it super easy to pick the exact color I want to work with. It also makes shopping simple. What do I need vs. what do I have?

I don’t but I will be. After ordering the same color of paint online only to find out that I have 3 of that blue and no teal, I need to do this.

I have a pension for re-buying cheaper craft paints more so than the expensive brands. Seems 75 cents-$2.00 is a quick fix for an “art attack” at lunch during a stressful work day or an easy purchase when wanting to buy “something else” that I don’t need at a local art supply store! LOL! I have, however, made charts for many of my watercolors (the paint tubes usually aren’t even close to what they really look like on paper) and other things like pens, markers, paint pens, Pan Pastels, etc. I really need to do my acrylics and a few other art supplies as well and put them in a centralized storage. I used to use such organization as a replacement for doing art because it was easy and came with much less inner criticism. I did this with my watercolor pencils for the same reason. It was amazing (and enlightening!) to see the difference between the color of the pencil lead vs. the color on paper, and then also the color wet vs. dry.

I haven’t done it for my acrylic paints yet but have made watercolor and marker swatches. Now I think I need to do the same for stencils so I don’t duplicate any more!

I love the vivid colors of Dr Ph Martin’s Radiant Concentrated Water Color liquid but they are not lightfast and made for photographic reproduction. Has anyone tried Martin’s lightfast watercolors? I’d make the investment if I knew they were worth it.

I am in love with LuminArte. They have a silk paint that is so wonderful if you want a {see through} kind of paint. It also has a great shimmer. I am a basketweaver…so I stir the paint with a #6 round reed that also becomes my sample of the color. Their H2O’s are great watercolors too. I have painted a few baskets with those.

When I got so excited with Copic pens, I did the same thing, bought the same color over and over so made a chart for those. I made one for colors AND point/nib sizes
Since then when color comes into my house I make a chart within a few weeks out of neccessity because I cannot remember what colors I have in what brand or even what medium. SIGH. (that was a gusty sigh – I understand it isn’t going to get better as I age.)

Ha, I have to do this with my paints(mostly Golden Fluid/Open Acrylics and Liquitex, my inks, re-inkers, spray inks, NeocolorII crayons, Pan Pastels & tools, my various Derwent and Prismacolor pencils, stamps and stencils and the list goes on and on.I have art decorated tabs for my different sections so when I shop online or in the store I have everything I already have purchased. Because art supplies are expensive and when you’re trying to build a full collection of pencils or crayons, it’s kinda disappointing to get a color you already have. So I’ve now eliminated that problem. I keep an envelope in the back for receipts and write in offers for free supplies.
I love the swatch idea for color mixing, putting the color on one side and the formula on the back.
