Art Journal Every Day: Junque Journal with Wood Burned Covers

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

I recently ordered some Birch Panels from Dick Blick (like a candy store for art addicts!) and I decided to use two of them as journal covers.  I thought about painting them, but then I thought, why would it matter that they're wood if I paint over all the woodgrain?!  So, I decided to break out my woodburning tool…

Ouch!  The effect is super duper cool, but man did that hurt my hand.  Perhaps it's because I have a cheap tool, but it's a lot of pressure and moving very slowly to get the wood to burn.  I'm glad I did it, but to be frank, it's going to be a long time before I do it again.  I almost wimped out on the back cover, but I decided to push through and make it happen!  And I'm so glad that I did because I love love love my new journal, especially the end papers in the front:

  • Another great video!! Your bumper (title) on your videos is great! Neat 3-D look, what are you using to edit the videos and create the incredible title type? How much time each week are you making videos?
Thanks for all the inspiration Julie!!

  • Wow! Beautiful covers. Wood burning has been on my list of techniques to try, perhaps this is the year to give it a go. Also, hurrah! Shout out to Michigan!

  • Oh dear Julie, I hate to tell you but it is definitely a tool issue. I have a variable temp wood burning tool and you wouldn’t have had hand pain doing this project and it probably would have taken half the time.
I know, as a fellow tool addict, that’s a dangerous thing to know. 🙂 Beautiful idea! I may have visit our friend Dick.

  • Oh, what memories this blog post brought back to me. As a child I received a wood burning set for Christmas. There were several little boards with designers to burn. But as soon as I finished them, I wanted more to do. My father showed me that we did not need to buy more. He cut little shapes out of thin plywood and I was off making my own designs. Also, Daddy and I made some little boxes etc to decorate. Great fun. Hmmm! Better dig that old iron out and see what I can do with it now! Thanks for the great journal cover idea! Dick Blick here I come!
