This canvas is a redo.  Here's the original:

Balzer Designs: 100 Canvas -- canvas redo

Besides the fact that "submerge" is spelled incorrectly, it just didn't feel like me anymore.  It was hanging in my bathroom and I would see it in the mirror behind me every day.  One day I just started adding paint to it.  And then it just kind of evolved over several months.  Every now and then I would catch it behind me and go running for some paint.  This may be too much information, but a few times I found myself just out of the shower, standing in my bathroom naked, with a bottle of paint in my hand, smearing a particular color in a particular place because I just couldn't wait.

Here's the (I think) finished canvas:

Balzer Designs: 100 Canvas -- canvas redo

I actually used my new Many Faces stencil…

ManyFaces
….to give me a base for the face.  You can definitely see it in the lips!

I *think* she's done for now.  I've moved her into the living room, which seems like a safer place.  Of course, I fear for the new painting that's now hanging in my bathroom…. 😉

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I guess that the re-do seems more “like you” but I must say that I also like the non-detailed face of the first one. How silly and fun to create in the bathroom.

  • Oh she is lovely. I love her, I shall have to get some of my old canvas out and try to improve them too. Not sure I have your magic touch though!

  • Love the redo. Now my curiosity is piqued, what’s hanging in the bathroom now? Actually, I’d love to see a post on what art hangs where in your apartment, how you decide what goes where, whether or not you rotate art, what do you do with it once it’s had its time on display…Thank you for the inspiration!

  • I think it’s so interesting that it went from a painting with everything but a face, to the face standing out from a background. A neat change, and such a cool thing to see the progress of the art in your own home. Thanks for sharing!

  • Julie, I can’t find the stencils anywhere. BlueMoon is out of stock and a Google search got me nowhere that had them. Any ideas? Thanks so much. I’d love to try them.

  • Hi Julie:
You painted yourself!! Same eyes, same mouth, and the same delicate beauty.
I love that she’s not just another pretty face, but that she has substance and a story to tell.
I wonder what I would have thought of this painting 2 or 3 years
ago, I’m sure I would have been drawn to it’s beauty, but, undoubtedly, perplexed at it’s complexity. You and your work have certainly broadened my view of what art is, and you’ve helped me see that it can be both beautiful, yet endlessly compelling.

  • The original was a nice painting but I must say that I do love the redo much better. I think you gave it more definition and softened the colors. I like it!
