Have I mentioned that stamp carving is dangerously addictive?!

I came home from Scrapbook Centrale and unpacked my bag.  To be clear, I unpacked my class bag.  My suitcase has been ravaged for parts and pieces, but it’s still sitting on a chair waiting to be properly unpacked.  Priorities, people.  Anyway, when I unpacked my bag, I found a stamp I had started as a demo in class and I simply *had* to finish it up.

1-eye-wm

Carving this stamp warmed me up and I immediately wanted to try out an idea I had.  I wanted to carve a rotating repeat stamp with a “wood cut style” background.

2-SouthWest-wm

I loved the way it turned out, and it sparked a new idea: I wanted to take the idea a step further and try making more purposeful lines in the background:

3-Flowers-wm

Then I was staring at the random bits of rubber I hadn’t yet put away and I thought, “Well I’ll just cut them into squared off blocks so they’ll be ready to go when I need them.”  But then there was this one rectangle block and I thought, “Well, my repeating scroll stamp got broken in class.  Maybe I should make a replacement.”

4-patternscroll-wm
It didn’t turn out quite the way I wanted, so I decided to try one more repeating stamp to make myself feel better about my carving skills.

5-VaseOfFlowers-wm

Yay! Do you see the vase of flowers?

Then I thought, “Well, if I can carve a vase, why not a face?!”

7-SkullNeckFace-wm

Ick.  Weird skeleton face.  But, I liked the flower motif.  So I decided to try running with that idea.

6-FlowersCenter-wm

But then I just couldn’t let go of the face idea.  I wanted to get it “right.”

8-facerotation-wm

By this point I only had one square of rubber left.  I also had only twenty-minutes before I had to leave to catch a train.  I figured, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”  And I hacked out a quick and dirty repeat in twenty-minutes.

9-20MinuteStamp-wm

Have I mentioned that stamp carving is addictive?!  Time for me to get more rubber!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • These repeating stamps just amaze and intrigue me! You have such a talent to see these different patterns and get them out of your head thru your hands. The end result tags are truly amazing! These could easily be a set or two of stamps for sale if you wanted! Beautiful and skillful work.

  • I, too, want to know–like the other Nan–what the grid stamp is for. And I also want to know if you draw your designs first, or just go for it–I mean now that you are an experienced, addicted carver, not just starting out.

  • You are the queen of inspiration when it comes to stamp carving!! After I got your book I went insane and carved hundreds of stamps. I actually bought hundreds of erasers from the dollar store and I still have a huge supply, and my husband bought some fancy german(swedish?) carving tools that I love. It is so much fun… tell me how you explain this addiction to others? SO MUCH FUN.
