THrowAway

One of the things I often share with students is how to create your own tools.  I recently showed my students in Montreal how to cut a tag into a paint wedge tool.

From Balzer Designs: Hey! Don't Throw That Away! DIY Paint Wedge Tools. Create your own cool texture tools using old room key cards.
One of my students then showed me an even better idea!  Her name is Angelle and she shared a ring of room keys/credit cards/gift cards that she had made.  She used decorative scissors to cut the edges of her plastic cards.

From Balzer Designs: Hey! Don't Throw That Away! DIY Paint Wedge Tools. Create your own cool texture tools using old room key cards.

Brilliant!  I only own one pair of decorative scissors, a pair of pinking shears, so I cut one card with the pinking shears and the rest by hand because I don't mind things being a little bit wonky.

So cool!  Durable plastic tools instead of paper ones!

Here are the prints that each tool I made makes:

We all have so many of those plastic room keys, loyalty cards, gift cards, etc.  Instead of throwing them away, why not cut them into a super useful tool!?

  • Now why didn’t I think of that?!
I use them to spread paint but hadn’t thought of making cuts and patterns with scissors to make portable tools.

  • I had just collected a group of used gift cards I had lying around because I was looking for something smooth to apply gesso to one of my art journal pages and this will be a great way to use some of them because those texture tools from the art store aren’t cheap. Thanks for the great idea!!!

  • YAY! I have old, expired credit cards to use. I’m going to cut them right through the numbers for safety (maybe that will make more interesting patterns?).
Finally! another use for those decorative scissors!

  • Love those homemade texture tools! I also use dollar store spatulas made of silicone–cut patterns into the edge. These are good for Gelli plates (especially homemade ones), because there are no hard/sharp edges.

  • The cards also work well to spread paint on projects even if you don’t cut the edges; For example when working with stencils.
