My Mom and I were poking around in the MoMA gift store and she was admiring some holiday pop-up cards by paper engineering genius, Robert Sabuda.  She was thinking about buying some of his amazing pop-up cards and I thought, well, I won't be able to make something as awesome as his cards, but I can certainly make her a few holiday pop-up cards!

And so, I did!

I think they turned out pretty darn cool!  I'm not going to lie, it took me a while to figure out how to make them work.  I went through a lot of paper and many many many drafts.  But now that they're all done, I'm totally delighted with them!  Plus, because they're .svg cutting files, now that I've done the hard work of designing them, I can cut a million of them without even thinking about it!

I think it's important to always learn and improve.  I hope that each project I make — whether it's painting or paper engineering — teaches me something so that I'm better the next time I sit down to create.  From a design point-of-view, I think these cards are an improvement on previous pop-up cards that I've made — particularly in two ways:

  1. I added the perforation lines into the cutting files, so these are super simple to put together.  No more scoring for me!
  2. I figured out how to add a "cover" so that the inside of the card has patterned paper instead of just being plain.  These ones use scrapbooking paper, but I'm planning to make some with hand painted papers.

You can watch this video to see how the card is put together once it's cut:

If you'd like to purchase the .svg cutting files you can do so in my etsy shop.  If you'd like to make your own pop-ups (no cutting machine needed), be sure to check out Robert Sabuda's website, filled with FREE pop-up patterns!

  • Before I got to the text I was thinking HOLY-CRAPOLY if these are just off the cuff I might as well go back to bed. I can see the work involved and was very relieved when you said you went through a lot of paper! They are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
