Guest Post: Stenciling with Inka Gold with Kelly

This week I recorded an episode of the Paperclipping Roundtable podcast.

Podcast

As you can see from the photos, I make lots of funny faces when I'm talking and I gesticulate wildly.  At one point during the voice-only recording, I raised my hand when I wanted to speak!  In any case, give it a listen and see what you think!

And now onto today's guest post from Kelly Klapstein.

Hello everyone!  I am thrilled to be invited by Julie to be a guest blogger today and am really excited to share some fun, easy techniques using some Balzer Designs stencils and Viva Décor Inka Gold. For dramatic effect, I’ve used some black tags and paper, but also applied it to white and manila to show varied effects.

Photo 1
Inka Gold is a beeswax medium with vibrant shimmer that comes in a rainbow of colours, and I’ve used it so many different ways.  One of my favourite techniques is applying Inka Gold to paper with a stencil.

The easiest way to use Inka Gold is simply apply it with your fingertip.  Just make sure to hold the stencil firmly in place.  Here I’m using Julie’s Mini Hexagons stencil with “Gold.”

It dries very quickly and isn’t messy because it cleans up well with only water.  I didn’t want to waste any leftover so I spritzed my stencil and used a piece of foam to pick up the excess Inka Gold.

Then I swiped and blotted the damp foam and Inka Gold onto the Mini Hexagons stencil on the manila tag.

TIP: As soon as it dries, in a few minutes, buff Inka Gold with a clean dry cloth to bring out the shimmer and set the product.  It won’t smudge!

I also used the leftover Gold and foam with the Mini Pattern Leaves stencil as well. You can see that adding a little water extends the medium and creates a softer, more subtle stenciled image.

I tried some Cobalt Blue with the Pattern Leaves stencil and direct application onto a white tag.

Then I applied Rose Quartz onto black Bazzill cardstock with the Mini Flower Quarter stencil, using the foam and a spritz of water.  TIP: Use very little water.

Creative colour combinations are endless! You can combine different colours using only one stencil, as I did here, with Lava Red and Gold on the Flower Quarter.  Just change up your foam… or your finger!

I’m a scrapbooker, so I had to make a layout using Julie’s stencils and Inka Gold. I used her 12 x 12 “Indian Leaves” stencil, which I thought was perfect for this Fall photo of my daughter.

I cut out the Mini Flower Quarter as a photo mat and also cut out the red leaf as part of the title.

I had so much fun doing this blog post and playing with your wonderful stencils….thank you Julie! I hope all of you are inspired to pull out your stencils and try some of these great ideas from all the guest bloggers.  I know I will!

  • Please do not ever put your fingers directly into the jar of inkagold. Inkagold is based on beeswax and it can become mauldy. Please watch out.
