Today I want to talk about the "Filmstrip" stencil:

FilmstripsLOGO

Here is a layout I created with the stencil back in 2012:

OurMother'sDay-wm

More recently, I've been playing with it in my art journal:

AJ2-blueface-wm
AJ2-blueface-wm

As you can see, I layered the numbers from the stencil on top of some of the stenciled film cels.  I also stenciled in both black paint and white paint.

AJ-blackpage-wm

On this page I lettered inside of the stenciled film strip.  And did you notice that I also used the "photo" from the filmstrip across Jack's forehead in the photo?

AJ-Instagram-wm

This is a photo I posted on instagram recently.  I wanted to show off just how teeny tiny my doodles are!  It's another fun way to use the Filmstrip stencil.

Today I am giving away BOTH a 6×6 "Filmstrip" stencil AND a 6×6 "Hexagons" stencil.  This is the Hexagons stencil:

And here is layout I made with it back in 2012:

If you would like to win BOTH a 6×6 "Filmstrip" stencil AND a 6×6 "Hexagons" stencil leave an answer to the following question in the comments section of this blog post:

What is your favorite stencil that you own and why?  And if you don't own any stencils, why haven't you taken the leap?

Please note: You must leave a comment on this post, e-mail replies will not be entered to win.  Winner will be announced next Wednesday.

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. Last week's winner is…

Weeklycircleswinner

Congratulations, Anne!  E-mail me with your mailing address and I'll get those stencils out to you!

  • Hi Julie – I have a bunch of stencils and masks. I love your “if you believe you can” mask but one of my all time go-to’s is filled with cameras of different vintages. I use that one all the time both to just add layers to a background but also as visual elements on a page.

  • I’ve been using some metal ribbon as a stencil on some of the background layers in my travel journals, but haven’t used any premade stencils yet. I think that it’s primarily because I don’t see any that appeal to me in the stores. I always forget about ordering them online for some reason. I am particularly fond of your filmstrip stencil and how you’ve used it.

  • My favorite stencil is a large brass butterfly. Funny thing is, thiugh, I rarely use it! It’s my favorite because I love butterflies.
I use a stencil that has small holes most often. I don’the know it’s na me or who makes it, but it is similar to the shape from using drywall tape.

  • Hi, I have a growing collection of stencils that I love to use, with multiple techniques, especially Gelli Plate printing. However, your question has made me realize that my favorite “stencil” is a cluster of antique alphabet/number stencils, over 75 years old, that my artist grandmother had. Although passed away for many years, her art supplies, including the stencils, art books, artwork and her personal art journals, are among my most treasured possessions and greatest inspiration in my artistic pursuits!

  • I love using stencils, but right now my favorite stencil is one I made from a photo of one of my granddaughters. She was looking up at the sky so the angle is perfect. The silhouette stencil still accentuates her youth and innocence but also shows promise of beauty. She wages a war with mental illness every day and every time I use it I am reminded how far she’s come. I would love to play with your creative stencils. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • Which is my favorite – hard question. I’ve made quite a few myself of famous people that I admire and some very geometric ones, that are easy to cut. Perhaps the most favored purchased are those that are more intricate – like a doily or flower. Love the ideas you have for using the film strip – one wouldn’t know it was a film strip per se with the way you’ve used it.

  • Hi Julie! I’m a newbie to art journaling but I’m having great fun exploring different tools and methods for using them. One stencil I have that gives a neat effect is raindrops. I love your work and your upbeat, “you can do this!” manner. Thanks for all you do!

  • Thank you!!! I owe maybe one stencils but not sure how to use them. I tried once I think I had too much paint because it ‘bled out’. I want to use them more. I love the idea of using a spray. I would love to win a stencil from you. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • My favorite “stencil” is a piece of screening that my husband brought home from work. I feel that I’m saving it from a landfill and I love it because ever time I use it I think about how sweet it was that he brought it home for me to use!

  • Having to decide which is my favorite is like asking which of my children are my favorite – it cannot be done! I am totally addicted to stencils and have quite a collection. I use stencils in my art journal every time I create something, sometimes just a small portion of the stencil and sometimes the whole thing. They are a great tool. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • First, I must applaud you for dedicating the time and determination to focus on being a healthier you with all of your weight loss. Compare photos of you before and after and the beauty and confidence that radiates now is a wonderful transition. YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL , CONFIDENT AND RADIANT! You walk in beauty.
As far as my favorite stencil….that is a hard one. The stencils with the most paint on is my 12 x12 mixed circle sizes, the different hands that is your stencil that I love, and the tree with the hanging bird cages. I already own the stencil of yours where there are honeycombs, circles and another that slips my mind. It is a large trio stencil. I had saved a few old film negatives from years ago knowing that I wanted to use them for something, I had no idea for what then, and then they got lost when I moved. Maybe my husband secretly tossed them thinking I already had too much junk 😉 I was so excited to see this new stencil! I would love an opportunity to win the film strip with numbers. So cool. Thank you.

I think stencils are such a great deal because they are so versatile. You can get different looks by what and how you apply color. Sometimes you don’t need to apply color at all, just draw the outline. Stencils, it’s all good.
    Thanks always for the inspiration.

    Thanks always for the inspiration.

  • I have just begun using stencils and need to add to my small collection! I have 2 favorites at the moment -a bird on a branch, and a flower stencil. I love using both with molding paste or heavy body acrylic paint. Thank you so much for sharing ideas and techniques! I need to learn all I can!

I have three favourite stencils that I can’t choose between, and they’re all your designs – Peacock Doily, Circles in Lines and Dash Circle Dash. These are the three that get used most often.

  • Julie,
Again today you have inspired many and gotten many comments.
As a daily e-mail reader I have learned so much from you and admire your every creation.
My journals lay out on my desk and by my computer so that as I pass them I try to put something in one or more of them several times a day, as per one of your suggestions.
My favorite stencil is a 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch fly swatter with quarter inch holes. I can put the design under or over in layers. It has been so fun to use and such an unusual buy.
Thanks again Julie for all you do for so many!

  • Hi Julie, I have meant to write to you many times before this to let you know how much I love and appreciate your art work, your blog, all the great things you take the time to show us. At first, I didn’t really “get” your art. I am trying to become more free and a bit wilder myself, so I learned to love, love the boldness and freedom you display in your art. I have several stencils already, but not many. My favorite I think is one that looks like damask…you know, that silky pattern sewn into vintage fabric. I use it all in one piece, or just bits of it all around pages. Neat. I would love to have the stencils you are giving away. i hope I am not too late to enter!!

  • I love the way you use stencils in unexpected ways! My favorite go-to stencil is the 6×6 Punchinella. I use the stars, hexagons and circles from it to create background texture in my art journals and mixed media canvases. Love its versatility!

  • Hi Julie,
Oh, I’ve certainly taken the leap…big time!
I do like most of my stencils, while there are a few I haven’t warmed up to, still use them all of the time. Favorites are more abstract but I do love the circles with radiating lines out and own about 4-5 versions from CW and other companies. They are very dynamic.
    Thanks

  • I own a lot of stencils, but haven’t used a lot yet. It SEEMS like too much of a mess to use them, but I make big messes on other things, so. . . .My favorites so far are the Jill K Berry ones that make great backgrounds. I don’t know where to buy the ones you design, Julie.
By the way, Julie, would you write sometime about how you lost all the weight that you have in the past couple of years. You’re quite an inspiration, yet quite beautiful then, too, as well as now. Thank you.
I’d LOVE to win these stencils!!!

Both the filmstrip and hexagons look intriguing! I would happily add them to my binder! Congrats to whomever wins!

I’ve been off stencils for a while because I’ve overcommitted PL swaps and feel like I’m on Kindergarden some days with all the cutting.
October ,back to stencils, journaling and my creativity: not making cards to please others! Thanks, love your blog and work. Hope to see you in San JoseM

  • I love all my stencils! Probably the ones I use most in art journaling are Blazonry and the geometric Triangle Mosaic from the Crafters Workshop. When it comes to gelli plate use, I love Circles in Lines from the Crafters Workshop. My Balzer Bits are great for small spaces in my art journal. One that also gets used over and over is my draftsman’s alphabet which adds to any background as a great layer. Oops….forgot the Chevron, too. Love it for backgrounds. See…..it’s just too hard to come up with favorites when you have a drawer full of them!!

Now on to the stencil portion. Asking which is my favorite is a totally unfair question. I am a stencil junkie/hoarder. Seriously I need a 12 step program. I began buying stencils about 2 yrs ago after taking your stencil 101 and 30 days in your Art Journal classes, and I hope to own all or as many stencils as I can. I always buy in pairs, I get the matching 6×6 of which ever 12×12 I buy. I love that film strip stencil, I don’t own that one yet. Your work is a creative inspiration for using stencils in journaling. Being my drawing skills are very limited, stencils are a necessity for me. Thanks for the share, and the giveaway. (((HUGS))))

  • I have lots of stencils, both yours and others. (Yours are best, and I’m not just saying that). I love the one that looks like a quilt design, but each section has a different design inside. I don’t know the name, but it’s amazing. Thanks for a chance to win two more of your fabulous stencils.

  • My favourite stencil is a flourish leaf stencil that I’ve used for cards and pages – I love the graceful line of the leaves and the versatility. I really like using modelling paste to build texture and beauty to whatever design I’m working on.

  • My favorite stencil is the Balzer butterfly stencil. I love it because you can use the more detailed stencil wing over the open one to get a layered effect. You demonstrated its use in the free videos you did a while back, which was when the full glory of the layered stencil burst upon me. I also love it because I guess it is an older stencil and it took me months to track one down. I feel very fortunate to have snagged one at last.

  • I love these stencils. As well as how you used them.
My favorite at the moment is a set of Plaid stencils which are four designs to a sheet. There are three sheets so a total of twelve stencils to play with layering. Of course if I was to win the giveaway the hexagon and filmstrip would become my favorite.
Thanks for the giveaway as well as your free class on stenciling. I learned a lot from it. 🙂

  • I have never bought a commercial stencil but i have always made them myself at home. I made pattern stencils, i made figurative stencils. I like geometric patterns the most. Recently, i am giving a try to face/portrait stencils. If i can manage i am hoping to do a series about ancient sculpture portraits, perhaps Greek mythological deities.

  • My current favorite (:-) is the mini echoes. I made a bunch of gelli deli prints using it for my junkie journal project and they are by far my favorite… In every color. It is hard to choose a favorite, I am definitely a stencil addict at this point. So many applications for them, so little time!

  • I don’t own a stencil I don’t love and I like them in both the 12×12 and the 6×6. So, which is my fave? Can’t pick one but I have all of your face stencils and they have helped me sooo much. I also love the herringbone in both sizes and I use the days of the week stencils and stamps all the time in my PL. Have many Balzer bits that I am wanting to try with the gelli plate, etc., etc. I do not have the filmstrip or hexagons so would LOVE to add them to my collection of playthings!

  • Hi! Love your blog! I just started art journaling and love all the awesome things you can do in a journal. So far I have tried word masks and some paper word stencils. I would love to try plastic stencils that would be more durable and perhaps hold up better than the paper ones I have been using. I am drawn to the photo strip one since it would allow any little sketches or journaling on one page! Thanks for sharing your designs and for the opportunity to win!

I really like thsse because I can use them to get the correct placement of the eyes, nose and mouth. I like to go for my own hair and I sometimes like to do my own eyes on things. I also like to add wording with blocks in stencils, so these of the film strips would be a favorite to own. Thanks again for the chancer to win them.

  • I love alphabet stencils, even the cheap ones you get in the school supplies section. Sometimes I form words and sometimes I just use the letters as background. I think I would like using geometric shapes or maybe people. Just getting started…..

  • I can’t remember the last time I used a stencil but at the moment I am champing at the bit to try it out on fabric and although I have looked at seemingly hundreds of stencils I haven’t yet come across your hexagons. That is just exactly what I want! I envisage areas of them that are quite stark and clear fading out to almost nothing with embroidery for embellishment.

Kinda hard to choose. Hmmm…I pick Busy Bee by American Mixed Media. It’s a 12 x 12 take on a honeycomb/hexie. I love to doodle inside the open spaces!

My favorite stencil is a BIG fly swatter. It is 61/2 x

fun both over and under other things. It is a great layer.

  • Julie – I just came across your blog. I am probably too late for your two stencil giveaways, but your artwork is just stunning. I don’t have a favorite stencil as I don’t think I have any. I would use Stencils for the Gelli Plate printing.
I just created a blog on Typepad as I am a newly Independent Demonstrator with Stampin’ UP!.
I will bookmark your blog and look for you on Pinterest.

  • I love my circles stencil I bought from a chain store, and your numbers stencil I bought from Hobby Lobby. I love exploring and playing with stencils and masks and enjoy using things around the house……paper clips, rick-rack, rubber bands, and more. I’d love to get a set of the film strip and hexagon stencils to play with. I love how you have used them over the years.

The last thing I bought, a gelli print maker I’ve sued twice and have not really made friends with it! I guess I just like the freedom of putting paint to paper and not having to get out stuff and cleaning it! patsy

  • I haven had much luck with crafting “designer” stencils as I couldn’t achieve enough varied looks that wasn’t to repetitively boring. However, I recently bought a set of basic shapes stencils with different shapes and sizes that are PERFECT. They are made from paper but they work well to give simple accents and even focals to any project and the basic shapes means they stay classic and never go out of date!

  • I’m in love with your Henna Hands stencil right now. I recently used it on my journal cover that I created for your Junque Journal class (which I’m loving!!!). I like the versatility of using either the whole hand as a template or just using certain design elements of the hands. It is just so unique. Thank you Julie for the opportunity to win some free stencils 🙂

  • My favorite stencils are the ones I have picked up for 5-10 cents at the local weekly flea market. Nothing fancy but they work. I am happy to give them new life. I imagine they sat unused for a long time before they were donated and found their way home with me.
I would love to own all of your stencils….someday!

  • Love your cityscape……why, because I grew up on East 10th Street across from Tompkin’s Square Park and I love everything related to Manhattan. I live in Florida now but I will always be a city girl.

  • I only have a few stencils that I got when I was doing more scrapbooking. I am just starting to art journal and I would love to have something more hip and happening than basic circles, heart and a few dated typefaces that are my current collection! 🙂 Thanks, Julie!

  • I can’t pick a favorite. I love using stencils for artwork and also on fabric. I especially enjoy layering with stencils.

  • Pomegranate hands down. That is my go to stencil with the mini punchinella. After serving over 30 years in the United States Air Force as an active member and a civilian. I just now able to start working on my art. My stencil stash is low but I am building on it. Thanks for everything you have done for me to start with using stencils and getting me motivated to work on my art. BTW I love making a mess with my gelli plate. I am so addicted to it. Love it with your stencils. My husband past away a year and half ago so this is also my therapy.
