Today I want to talk about the "Filmstrip" stencil:
Here is a layout I created with the stencil back in 2012:
More recently, I've been playing with it in my art journal:
As you can see, I layered the numbers from the stencil on top of some of the stenciled film cels. I also stenciled in both black paint and white paint.
On this page I lettered inside of the stenciled film strip. And did you notice that I also used the "photo" from the filmstrip across Jack's forehead in the photo?
This is a photo I posted on instagram recently. I wanted to show off just how teeny tiny my doodles are! It's another fun way to use the Filmstrip stencil.

Hi Julie – I have a bunch of stencils and masks. I love your “if you believe you can” mask but one of my all time go-to’s is filled with cameras of different vintages. I use that one all the time both to just add layers to a background but also as visual elements on a page.

I’ve been using some metal ribbon as a stencil on some of the background layers in my travel journals, but haven’t used any premade stencils yet. I think that it’s primarily because I don’t see any that appeal to me in the stores. I always forget about ordering them online for some reason. My favorite stencil is a large brass butterfly. Funny thing is, thiugh, I rarely use it! It’s my favorite because I love butterflies.

I have several stencils that I use all the time in my journals. They all seem to be a focal point or can fill in the background. Swirls/ circles tend to attract me most often. I also have a mask I made out of a profile head from a magazine I covered in contact paper. I love that one too.

I am currently in love with a 6×6 stencil of just small polka dots….for some reason it has been a current obsession. I have a small pile of stencils but I seem to go in streaks and just love one for a while then all of a sudden it changes to a new one. Weird huh?

Which is my favorite – hard question. I’ve made quite a few myself of famous people that I admire and some very geometric ones, that are easy to cut. Perhaps the most favored purchased are those that are more intricate – like a doily or flower. Love the ideas you have for using the film strip – one wouldn’t know it was a film strip per se with the way you’ve used it.

New to stenciling and art journaling. I have purchased a couple stencils from a limited number available in my small town. I would like to grow a collection. I have not used them much because I need more space to be messy. I currently use a TV tray in the living room.

My favorite “stencil” is a piece of screening that my husband brought home from work. I feel that I’m saving it from a landfill and I love it because ever time I use it I think about how sweet it was that he brought it home for me to use!

I love “Crossed”. I love it because it pairs we’ll with any circular stencil or stamp and it is great for masculine cards. It’s open enough to doodle in & spray large areas. I love the clean graphic-ness of it. Love it, love it, love it….along with the other 50 or so stencils I own. ;-D

Hi Julie, I have meant to write to you many times before this to let you know how much I love and appreciate your art work, your blog, all the great things you take the time to show us. At first, I didn’t really “get” your art. I am trying to become more free and a bit wilder myself, so I learned to love, love the boldness and freedom you display in your art. I have several stencils already, but not many. My favorite I think is one that looks like damask…you know, that silky pattern sewn into vintage fabric. I use it all in one piece, or just bits of it all around pages. Neat. I would love to have the stencils you are giving away. i hope I am not too late to enter!!

Oh, I’ve certainly taken the leap…big time!
I do like most of my stencils, while there are a few I haven’t warmed up to, still use them all of the time. Favorites are more abstract but I do love the circles with radiating lines out and own about 4-5 versions from CW and other companies. They are very dynamic.

I’ve only been using stencils a little while – started with texture paste but now I see how versatile they are. My favourite at the moment (it does change) is a hexagonal, honeycomb one.

When it comes to gelli plate use, I love Circles in Lines from the Crafters Workshop. My Balzer Bits are great for small spaces in my art journal. One that also gets used over and over is my draftsman’s alphabet which adds to any background as a great layer. Oops….forgot the Chevron, too. Love it for backgrounds. See…..it’s just too hard to come up with favorites when you have a drawer full of them!!

I began buying stencils about 2 yrs ago after taking your stencil 101 and 30 days in your Art Journal classes, and I hope to own all or as many stencils as I can. I always buy in pairs, I get the matching 6×6 of which ever 12×12 I buy. I love that film strip stencil, I don’t own that one yet. You demonstrated its use in the free videos you did a while back, which was when the full glory of the layered stencil burst upon me. I also love it because I guess it is an older stencil and it took me months to track one down. I feel very fortunate to have snagged one at last.

I have never bought a commercial stencil but i have always made them myself at home. I made pattern stencils, i made figurative stencils. I like geometric patterns the most. Recently, i am giving a try to face/portrait stencils. If i can manage i am hoping to do a series about ancient sculpture portraits, perhaps Greek mythological deities.

I really like botanicals, such as a fern leaf, but probably my most striking use of a stencil would have to be a small patio table done with a zebra stencil in two fairly bright blues. It looks great, and I’m not “into” animal prints at all. Still don’t know what made me make that leap!

I can’t remember the last time I used a stencil but at the moment I am champing at the bit to try it out on fabric and although I have looked at seemingly hundreds of stencils I haven’t yet come across your hexagons. That is just exactly what I want! I envisage areas of them that are quite stark and clear fading out to almost nothing with embroidery for embellishment.

The last thing I bought, a gelli print maker I’ve sued twice and have not really made friends with it! I guess I just like the freedom of putting paint to paper and not having to get out stuff and cleaning it! patsy

So fun to see these used so differently! My favorite stencil is a pretty ancient piece of sequin waste. It came in a goodie bag in a workshop I took years ago and I pull it out all the time. It is all messy and crusty and awesome.

I’m in love with your Henna Hands stencil right now. I recently used it on my journal cover that I created for your Junque Journal class (which I’m loving!!!). I like the versatility of using either the whole hand as a template or just using certain design elements of the hands. It is just so unique. My favorite stencils are the ones I have picked up for 5-10 cents at the local weekly flea market. Nothing fancy but they work. I am happy to give them new life. I imagine they sat unused for a long time before they were donated and found their way home with me.

Honestly one of my favorite stencils right now is the blazonry stencil. And I’m not just saying that ;). It lends itself to so many interesting things I use it a lot.

Hi My favorite way of Stenciling is Ghosting, Just do a color,Hold the stencil over your work,Spray with water,lift Stencil and Towel Blot. Just love the effect with just water. Thanks love all the ideas weekly.
Hi My favorite way of Stenciling is Ghosting, Just do a color,Hold the stencil over your work,Spray with water,lift Stencil and Towel Blot. Just love the effect with just water. Thanks love all the ideas weekly.

Pomegranate hands down. That is my go to stencil with the mini punchinella. After serving over 30 years in the United States Air Force as an active member and a civilian. I just now able to start working on my art. My stencil stash is low but I am building on it. Thanks for everything you have done for me to start with using stencils and getting me motivated to work on my art. BTW I love making a mess with my gelli plate. I am so addicted to it. Love it with your stencils. My husband past away a year and half ago so this is also my therapy.

i have so many stencils now but i think my favorite is one that is based off of japanese textile prints–it looks like fish scales or little overlapping rainbows.
