My brother recently had his birthday and so I made him a card and a gift (of course).  The card is a pop-up with a little bit of artsy flair:

I'm going to tell you a secret: the artsy flair is covering up a mistake!  Isn't that a good reason to have some artsy flair?  I miscalculated my pop-up element and so I needed to make the sides of the card longer.  Scraps of painted paper to the rescue!

The pop-up element is one I designed in Illustrator and then exported as an .svg file, converted over to an .fcm file in ScanNCut Canvas, and then cut with my ScanNCut.  Whew.  That sounds like a lot, but it's really quite a simple process!

Here he is with the card:

As for the gift, I put together this little canvas:

The background is painted deli paper, which really collages around a canvas so very easily!  Plus it's the quickest and easiest way to get a layered painted background down.  The text and the silhouette are both stencils I cut using the ScanNCut.

This is the photo that the silhouette is based on:

Myhb

It's pretty low-res because I stole it from my brother's instagram feed.  If I had used a higher-res photo, I might have gotten a slightly cleaner silhouette image, but nonetheless, I think it's recognizable as my baby bro.  Funny how the silhouette makes him look like he's wearing sunglasses, though….

As a minorly related sidenote, I have to tell you that after his birthday dinner we bought the best chocolate chip cookies I've ever had in my life (and I get around when it comes to chocolate chip cookies).  You can see us clutching them in the photo:

AllOfUs-sm
They're from Sweet Corner Bakeshop.  If you ever get a chance to buy a chocolate chip cookie there, go for it.  It's fabulous!

And yes, that is sea salt on the cookie!

Anyway, back on subject, handmade gifts are always a good thing, but I especially love being able to give gifts that are personalized to the receiver!  That's why I always try to include names or photos in the cards and gifts I make.  How about you?  Do you personalize the gifts you make?  Or is the fact that it's handmade enough?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I just realized that I never ever make handmade gifts. I’m trying to decide if that’s because I don’t think they’re “good enough” to gift or because I want to keep the good stuff for myself.
    Thanks for the inspiration.

  • I really like the picture. I would like to try this process. Is it difficult?

  • I love handmade gifts! Since my siblings and children are older, it’s actually harder to buy a gift than to make something personalized. This canvas is a great idea!

  • I sat here at my computer trying to figure out where Michael’s silhouette might be. It looked like an ink blot to me. Oh, well, I walked away, then I happened to glance back over my shoulder, and there he was!!! So cool.
