If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks!
Last Saturday I joined the Urban Sketchers up on the Columbia University campus for a quick afternoon of sketching. As always, it was awesome! I think it helps to be prepared when you go sketching. And so I was.
My bag of supplies includes my sketch kit, a bottle of water, a towel to sit on (you never know where you'll have to perch to sketch, and especially in a dress it's important to protect your hiney), and a sweater (for a change in weather).
I sat on the college green and sketched the statue of Pan. According to Wikipedia: Pan is the "God of Nature, the Wild, Shepherds, Flocks, Goats, of Mountain Wilds, and is often associated with sexuality."
Here's he is:
In the photo you can see my little sketch spot along with two other sketchers — one of whom upped my towel with a tiny portable chair (similar to this one, and weighing just 4 pounds!). I think it's awesome that the chair has a back. Makes it so much easier to sit somewhere and sketch for a while. I can only sit crosslegged for so long, you know. I might *have* to get one. ;)
Here's my sketch in progress:
One of the things that I love about the Urban Sketchers is that we all start at the same place and then spread out wildly according to our personal interests. At the end of the day we all gather together to share what we created. Here's a peek at some of the fabulous sketches (I can truly say that I am the worst sketcher in the bunch, but people are so very kind about it):
Isn't it interesting to see the three different interpretations of Pan in the photo above?
I find it inspiring and motivating to see the different styles, interpretations, and subjects that people choose. I don't love drawing buildings. I'll do it. But I'm much more drawn to people.
Here is this week's linky list:
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. Are you a local New Yorker? I've got 3 large cardboard boxes of stuff to give you! The 3 boxes have both used and brand new art/craft supplies. You need to pick up the boxes from midtown Manhattan (West side) by Monday. It's too much stuff for the subway. You'll need a car and/or taxi and possibly a helper. If you're interested, e-mail me. First one to e-mail gets the goodies! ETA: The boxes are gone! Thank you!

The coloring that you used on your sketch of Pan really brings out his mischievous sexuality.

i felt the same way when I joined the sketch group (everyone was better than me– but I didn’t care) I met another Julie groupie and gave you a shout out on my blog: here is my art adventure… http://schulmanart.blogspot.com/2014/07/urban-sketching-goes-suburban.html

Great to see your sketching. I really like the colors you used. It is inspiring to see all the different styles that everyone shared. I am taking your class this weekend because sketching scares me and I am hoping to overcome that feeling.

I’m looking forward to seeing who gets your stuff! I’m here in CT and have been a “Julie groupie” since 21 Secrets a few years back. Recently retired, you are on my bucket list for a class some day soon. (other than an online class). As much as I try to journal daily, it falls by the wayside as other things get in the way. Now that I have more time, I will try to “schedule” journaling in more regularly. Do you have a sketching class?

I’m always amazed by artists that will work in front of others and then to up the ante by working in public is even more daring! Love the idea of urban sketching – maybe someday when I am braver – your interpretation of Pan is amazing – it looks like “julie” to me – I would recognize your style in the group!

Julie, your work is great! I wouldn’t say it’s “worst in the group.” You have your own unique way of drawing, and that’s fine!
Thank you for sharing this. I wish I could go to your class this weekend, but I will be in Philly.

I LOVE your Pan sketch!! Don’t say U can’t sketch! NOT true! I’ve been sketching for 50 years & sometimes things look like they’re supposed to – other times, I just want to trash them. But it’s very relaxing to TRY.
I love all your art techniques.
I wish you’d posted what you’re giving away. I’ve never BEEN to NY but someday would love to win just 1 of your small goody boxes.
Thanks for sharing!

I like your sketch and think it’s just as good as the others. And a big bag to carry your stuff is always a must! Where’s your bag from?
