I always bring an art project with me. One of my favorite things to pop into my bag is my little sketchbook kit. Knowing that I'd have a lot of down time at the beach, I grabbed my sketchbooks and tossed them into my suitcase. Sometimes carting my normal art journal around is a bit difficult. It's heavy and big and requires some extensive supplies. My sketchbook is a way of making sure I still art & journal every day, but in a more transportable format. This was my first time sitting in the sand and sketching and I had a great time doing it!
I sketched a very similar scene in two different ways. First, I worked in my Gelli Printed journal with a black marker and a white pen.
Then I tried the scene in my watercolor journal. (People had moved, a dog arrived — so it's similar, but not exactly the same.)
Then I decided to try sketching a friend of mine as she slept.
I love being able to bring home these memories from the beach! I feel like sketching something makes you remember it way more than taking a photograph, because of the time involved in the process.

Beach Nap is so well done and your friend should be psyched that you took the time to sketch her. That lettering is one of my favs that you do. The dog on the beach with the fishing rods in the sand is nice as well. I have a travel art journal that I use with colored pencils and pens when I’m away for the day.

Julie, I love the page time for a beach nap. How did you draw the lady laying down? I want to learn to draw ppl in my art journal. I’m new to art journaling and I have so much fear, that it stops me from wanting to do art journaling!
