Art Journal Every Day: A Wire Bound Junque Journal

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

Oh my gosh, you guys!  I just made my very first wire bound journal and I can't believe how easy it was!  I will admit that I generally prefer a sewn binding because I like to create two-page spreads, but the ease of this binding may change my mind…!

CinchJournalBalzer

One of the tools that We R Memory Keepers sent me to demo on HSN was the Cinch bookbinding machine (the link goes to the one with round holes – I used the one with square holes, but it's slightly more expensive).

I watched a quick tutorial and immediately got to work making an art journal!

OnMyDesk-wm

I posted a super duper fast forward 15-second flip through on instagram and someone asked for a slower version.  Here it is:

And some photos too!  This is just a sampling of some of my favorite pages and parts!

And how about a quick photo of me (in my non-photogenic studio — ignore the mess) happily clutching my brand new art journal!

Now that I've made one, I want to explore making another.  This one was mostly a test.  I actually grabbed some pages I was planning to make into a sewn journal and cut them in half so that I could bind them with the wire binding.  Now that I've tested it, I'm ready to create something with crazy pages that wouldn't work in a stitched binding.  Oh, the possibilities….!!!

Here is this week's linky list:

  • Interesting. I must say that I prefer the ones that do not have the wire since I tend to dislike how it feels when my arm ends up across it as I work.

  • I’m not keen on spiral binding either. But I can see how using it AFTER you’ve completed all your pages, looks great! Love your pages Julie, as always 🙂

  • HA I have had a CINCH for a couple of years and just made my first journal with it last week – there is a learning curve and I do prefer sewn – but boy they are a cool tool. Thanks for sharing as I hadn’t thought of just binding up all the weird sized pieces I have lying around! LOVE your pages too.

  • I had been toying with the idea of getting a Cinch for ages. But since I’ve started mixed media journaling, it dawned on me that it would be cool – and less cumbersome – to use a spiral journal because whatever page I was working on would lay flat. But with a Cinch, my background/page design could go all the way to the top of the paper. Then i could collect completed pages and bind them into a journal. Easy peasey.
So, Miss Julie, I was one of your viewers when you were demoing the Cinch, and it was you – and you alone – who pushed me over the edge. My brand new Cinch is on its way and I can hardly wait to give it a try.
    BTW, you were fabulous!

  • Your demo on HSN was great. Loved your enthusiasm. No wonder they hired you to demo. As a left -hander I must say that being able to bind my journal pages at the top instead of on the side is GREAT. No more bumping into the wires! Yay! Have a super fun weekend.

  • Loved your HSN demo & was texting “the crew” as soon as I knew you were on live. I already had the round hole punch but now you and Miss Sandy Yglesias inspired me to consider the square hole one. What did people DO without these awesome tools???
