Abstract Expressionism Studio Class at MoMA: Part Two

Thanks for all your nice comments on yesterday's ramble about my fabulous class at MoMA!

Our next artist was Mark Rothko.

As you can see from the photo above, it's the sheer scale of Rothko's work that often blows me away.  What you see from far away (or in a photo)…

…is nothing compared to what you can see when you actually walk up to the art.

There's so much subtle gradation of color and so many active brush strokes.  It's really wonderful!  And, like de Kooning, you think it's random and haphazard, but it's hundreds of layers of thought.

My own Rothko frustrates me.  I kept trying to create the many thin layers of transparent color, but it was really tough on such a small canvas.  It's important to keep the color areas separate, but hard to do on a teeny tiny canvas.

Again, this exercise awakened a desire in me to work much much larger.  You can do things on a larger canvas that you can't on a smaller one.

I'm sad to say that I missed Jackson Pollock week.

I heard it was a wild week with much paint being splashed everywhere and on everyone!

At the end of the last class, we gathered together and each student shared a favorite painting that he or she had created during the course of the class.  Here is a peek at some of the work:

Wonderful stuff, right?

I was so so so so so soooooooooo sad to see this class end. But, the really good news is that I'm all signed up to take another class at MoMA with the same teacher!  Super duper excited!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I’m sorry to say that I just don’t “get” the art of Rothko.
Now, Jackson Pollack is some art that I enjoy viewing.

  • Sheesh, it’s taken me this long to figure out how to comment Julie. First of all I loved loved loved your first few very colorful abstracts — so much movement and terrific shapes.
I have enjoyed following your abstract class. I too love abstracts (because I can’t draw or paint LOL) but I do appreciate any kind of art.
Thank you for sharing the way the various painters layered their paints on the larger canvasses. I work small so have never been able to achieve that color differentiation and overlapping either so now I don’t feel so bad.
I have been to museums in Washington DC but it’s been years. Oh how I’d love to live closer to NY, Chicago or DC so I could just drink in all the wonderful art museums. So I do a lot of online looking. And your site is a boon to me.
I so enjoy all your posts and thank you for taking the time to share them with all of us.

  • The detail pic you put up and the gradations of color remind me of Lazure technique, only in oil.

  • You must be one busy Chick! You seem to always have something going on, be it a class, workshop, shooting, etc.
When do you have time to be in the studio with you and your thoughts? I ask because I can’t just take an hour and “make art” and continue with my day. I have to have hours to be in the studio to enjoy making my art.
Loved this article BTW. Your art for this workshop was fantastic, as usual.
