I've recently become obsessed with the instagram account "nails2inspire."  The owner of the account posts lots of photos of insane nails, like these:

Frozen
Frozen

They're miniature works of art!  I especially love when she (I'm assuming the owner of the account is a woman) posts videos of the nail art being created.

I'm fascinated by them, but I don't even own any nail polish other than clear.  Then I saw that Anna Bond from the Rifle Paper Company had used a mixture of nail polish and gouache.

Brilliant! So, I grabbed some acrylic paint and got to work!

I still can't figure out how you do your right hand, but it was fun working super tiny.  I didn't actually have a brush small enough, so I ended up cutting some bristles out of a brush so that it would be small enough.  And, I will say that the paint started to peel off after about a day-and-a-half, even though I top-coated it with clear polish.  You can see the chipping here:

Chipping-wm
Real nail polish exists for a reason, I guess.  ;)

Nonetheless, I had fun!  In fact, I caught a case of the giggles while taking photos for this post!

Any recommendations on nail polish brands to begin my collection?  I know nothing about nails!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Your nails look so cute. Paper crafter Kristina Werner also has a nail blog at http://dailysomething.com/. I don’t follow it, but I believe she shows her nails and the nail polish she used to achieve the effects.

  • No recommendations on brands but I was in Walmart the other day and oh, my the colors of nail polish they had was fab!!! I couldn’t get over the range… every color under the rainbow. • You are so cute! OPI is a brand that they sell in the beauty supply shops and I have always had great luck with it staying put. I am no expert but, they say it is always good to make sure the natural oils are cleaned off of your nails first before painting and regular rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball should do the trick or nail polish remover. It makes sense to me. They say use a good base coat after cleaning the oils and then a good top coat to seal in your polish. Have a happy day 🙂

  • Love the way you did your nails, awesome!! Have you ever heard of Jamberry nails? It’s a home based company that sells nail wraps. I have tried them and they stay on so well. You just use a heat source like a blowdryer to apply them and they are great. So creative and so many styles to choose from.

  • Cute and fun nails! Regarding brands… Both OPI and Essie are fabulous, but kind of expensive. More than I like to spend anyhow. Here’s what I have found works really well for me. Sinful brand from Walgreens, it’s 1.99 a bottle, sometimes on sale for .99. It lasts longer on me than the expensive brands. Of course you always use a base coat, and a clear top coat after. I have experimented with a lot of brands, both on the high and low end of cost. Right now I am wearing a turquoise color by (cheap) Wet n’ Wild. I have had it on for over a week, not a single chip. I apply a clear top coat every couple of days.

  • I LOVE nail polish, almost as much as I do art supplies. Owning more bottles than I care to admit, I also follow a ton of nail polish bloggers. Usually my nail art isn’t fancy, just an accent nail or fun layering.
Start off with Sinful colors or Sally Hansen. OPI, essie, China Glaze, Sephora, Orly and other higher end brands can be found often at TJ Maxx/Marhalls for a good discount too.
Many nail artists use acrylic paint (usually the cheap kinds) and I’m pretty sure never really last too long (hence your chipping).
Always make sure to apply a base coat to a clean nail (a trick I learned is to wipe the nails with apple vinegar to prep), add your polish and I like to use the expensive, but good Seche Vite as a fast drying topcoat.
Here are some great nail bloggers (who probably also have IG’s to follow too)
    http://www.polishartaddict.com/
    http://www.chalkboardnails.com/
    http://www.thenailasaurus.com/
And if you ever need reviews on polishes both drug store and high end nail/beauty (because sometimes they are just horrible or are way too awesome not to buy) these ladies are my go to bloggers/IGers
    http://nouveaucheap.blogspot.com/
    http://www.vampyvarnish.com/
And I sometimes make the leap and use my nail polish in my art too – can get stinky but that okay with me!

    Love the polka dots!

  • julie. i agree that sinful colors $2 nail polish is my number 1 cheap yet long lasting polish brand. then i would rate sally hansen extreme wear for $3 as my number 2 fave. then maybe loreal nail polish for $5. then opi or essie. they’re about $8. i use orly bonder basecoat. it lasts a long time. i also like essie ridge filling basecoat. for topcoat i like cnd. the seche vita topcoat is quick drying & shiny, but the bottle goes bad about half way through the bottle. so you have to toss it out.

  • LOVE your nail art–beautiful! My favorite polishes are OPI, Sally Hansen Complete Manicure and Zoya. Most important to make a manicure last is to use a GOOD base coat and top coat AND wait a minimum of 15 minutes or longer between all coats.
My favorite base and top coat are by CND (Creative Nail Designs): the base coat is called “Sticky” and the top coat is called “Speedy.” I’ve had pedicures that lasted 4 weeks using CND’s products (they have polish, also).
