You guys, I am on a serious turn-paintings-into-bags kick!

BalzerToteBag-wm

I took four painted canvases and pulled them off of their frames.  Then I got to stitching.  It was really tough.  The two flower paintings are both collage based and not very flexible.  But, it was worth the struggle (you'll see where I had to a bit of hand stitching to make the seam work)!

To add a little New York grit, I lined the inside of the bag with NYC subway fabric:

I love my new tote bag and cannot wait to start carrying it!

I have a feeling there aren't going to be many painted canvases hanging around my house for long…I'm going to be pulling them all apart to make bags!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Wonderful one of a kind bags! I was just wondering if you have an industrial sewing machine. I would break needles trying to get put that heavy material together. What stitch length did you use?

  • Dale Rose is on to something, even without the industrial machine. Couple of hints… Step up the thread quality, an upholstery thread will work much better, and be sure to change to a heavier needle, and be sure it is a sharp! Many machines now feature needles with blunt points designed for knits, that move the threads of fabric aside instead of piercing. Also if you machi e slows down, take the hint and cut the power but help it along by hand- turning the wheel to complete the stitch. You can also use an awl to prepunch difficult and extra thick seams. Have sewn everything from lingerie to motorcycle seats on a basic sears home model.. Industrial not necessary if you are patient.

  • As much as I love paintings, I’ve always preferred original art that is also useful. Your bags are fabulous! I know I would buy a Balzer original bag in a heartbeat. In regards to the heavy sewing, I use a leather needle-it is heavy duty and can punch right through leather as it isn’t a woven fabric. It should work well on painted canvas too, along with a heavier thread.

  • Julie,
The bag is so amazingly awesome. I don’t have paintings I want to rip apart but I do have some canvas I can use. Yes the creative wheels are turning right now. What a great way to showcase your art. As a weaver I do that by wearing scarves I have woven. I have made a tote bags where I used a face painted on canvas as the center panel. I haven’t done the whole bag on canvas yet. I really like that idea. I ordered a Permapaque marker after you showed them on 21 Secrets Live and it worked great. That really made me happy as all 3 of my black sharpie poster paint markers have decided to be difficult. I was tempted to throw them across the room I was so frustrated with them. I’m glad I now have a better alternative. Thanks for the inspiration .

  • Hello! Great project. How is the paint holding up? Is it flaking or peeling? Is it acrylic or oil paint? Did you use any type of sealant?
    Thanks for sharing your experiences.

  • Well, canvas material is available as yardage, where you don’t have to rip out anything.

  • I have a large oil on canvas I would love to try to make into a bag. It is very stiff. If there a canvas softening product that might make it more pliable? Have you ever heard of anything like that?
