As I mentioned before, when we were at our little Art House retreat in Southern California, we played an art journaling game: Art Journal Round Robin. This is something that you could do with a group of any ability or age level. You could do it in person or via mail. It's super flexible and fun! Here are the rules:
- You have fifteen minutes to work. (We set a timer so that a buzzer went off at the end of fifteen minutes.)
- You start with your own journal so that the finished spread you get back has the least amount of your hand in it.
- There are absolutely no rules about what you can do and you should feel free to cover up and/or change anything.
- Books pass to the left.
- Optional: We allowed seven minutes between working sessions for drying, cleaning up, and creative rejuvenation.
These are collaborative photos and some of us took detail photos and some of us didn't. So, that's why it's a mish mash. Enjoy!
I'm going to steal Jenn's trick of collaging the book page onto the already painted face and then re-finishing the face. It's so transformative and a great way to fix a face that isn't quite working!
Jenn started her journal by laying down a resist. It was a really interesting foundation to start with.
It's interesting to see how much that big bold black writing dominates and transforms the page! I'm making an effort to stay away from black these days because I use it as a crutch to create focus. I'm trying to find other ways to create focus. It's difficult, but important.
The power of a white Sharpie and some journaling! I really like handwriting as a design element and I find myself using it more and more in my art journals. For tips on disguising your handwriting, click here.
I hope you enjoyed our art journaling game! I learned a lot about what transforms a page, dominates a page, and the kind of things I do in a pinch to make a page work for me. It was a fun experience, but it also taught me a few things. What a gas that must have been. I can’t even imagine having that kind of experience. Guess I need to work a bit harder on making it happen as opposed to just letting it happen – which means it probably won’t. It was so fun to see the progression…thanks again for sharing all that!
