I think I've mentioned before that I struggle with making cards.  My solution has been to eliminate the notion that it's a card from my mind.  Instead, I simply think of it as a piece of art you stick in an envelope.  I recently made a birthday card with this notion in mind:

Card-wm

I created a deli paper envelope for the card:

A happy solution to a consistent problem I have!  How do you approach card making?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I love making cards, it’s what I’m known for. Beautiful paper inspires me such as some of the Graphic 45 collections and the Gelli plate prints I make.

  • I love making cards because the small space makes me feel more secure somehow. I like to fiddle with the design until it works for me. I like your card. The wording making the hair on the figure is brilliant!

  • The way you share your feelings (joy, doubt, etc.) about your work is what is so refreshing to me. Card making is my only artistic endeavor and I just copy what I have seen other people do.
    It is my therapy.

    Seriously, I might give a mini-album for a gift/card but otherwise I’m just not into making cards.

  • I loved your card too – just made one from recycled flyers for 20% off from Bed Bath & Beyond. found paper to be a good weight. then made envelope from large ads that come in the mail all the time. I put them on my work table and use for wiping off paint brushes, etc. and in short time you have a wonderful piece of painted paper that is large enough to make an envelope

  • I use my painted/stenciled papers as abstract cards lately…I haven’t done handmade Christmas cards in a few years but when I used to I did it assembly-line style – glue down/paint/cut each piece on all fifty cards then do the next part on all 50, and so on…I would come up with the same design for the cards, but each one would end up different in the end of course, since each was individually made. Also, in the past I have created a piece of art and then photocopied it multiple times & attached to a blank card — not the same as the original of course, but handy when you want to give a small gift of art in multiples & are pressed for time.

  • I’ve been making cards for 15 years now, some for sale, some for personal use. I like to think of making a card as sending a bit of love, a bit of myself, to that person. I’ve always loved the process. Even the cards I make for sale, I try to imagine who would buy the card, and who they might buy it for. This goes even for sympathy cards (which I sell a LOT of). If you just try to do your best, and incorporate a bit of your own humanity into the work, it won’t be a struggle any longer. Think of making the ultimate recipient’s day a better one, just for getting your card. Good luck, Julie!

You have reversed this thought process perfectly and now you have a card, a present and a new concept. Triple play! And it’s cool and beautiful! A good day;

  • I made almost 3,000 cards to donate to Operation Write Home while my sons were deployed. Once I moved from that to mixed media I have only made those that I need for personal use. Got burned out a bit LOL. A little piece of art is exactly what they are. I love yours and would keep it. I tend to throw away commercial cards that I receive but have sewn little journals into handmade ones I particularly like.

  • Julie – LOVE your card!! I have NO problem making cards as that’s what I do any time I have spare time. I also like the small area & I don’t feel as overwhelmed as with a large sheet of watercolor paper or art journal page. I try to find time to paint each & every card (b’days, Christmas, etc) & that takes a LONG time. Finding the time to send them is then my problem. Aww well. I enjoy painting so I’m a happy camper!
    Thanks for sharing your card,
