So, I took that abstract (painting #20)…

BalzerAbstract-wm

…and I painted right over the top of it:

BalzerLargeFlowers-wm
BalzerLargeFlowers-wm
BalzerLargeFlowers-wm
BalzerLargeFlowers-wm
BalzerLargeFlowers-wm
BalzerLargeFlowers-wm

I love that you can still see peeks of the underpainting through the petals and leaves.  This feels more like me, but I'm still wandering a bit.  I like it, but I don't feel like it really counts as an "abstract."  What do you think?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Call me crazy, but I really like your original abstract. You used my favorite colors too. I like it alone or I see being a wonderful background for a small photo, etc.
The art you did over it is amazing and I would call it a piece with abstract elements. Your style, but the abstract elements that show through add unique details to your work.

  • I do think it is more you. Most of your work has very dramatic color choices. I used to teach quilting and the most dramatic quilts I saw had lots of different values. I think the reason you might not have been satisfied with your abstract is that it didn’t reflect the color choices you usually make.

  • While I agree, the final painting is lovely, I really miss the original painting and if it had been me I wouldn’t have sacrificed it to become just an underpainting.
But it’s all your creation and we have different tastes, and I only mention this as you requested imput.
No, I don’t think it’s an abstract anymore, but yes, it is more to your usual style.
Thanks for sharing your work and showing us the process.

  • I just completed a Flora Bowley class and it’s all about the underpainting and the marks – ending up with a beautiful painting with lots of depth. Soooo – I see your process and like the second one much better.

  • No, I wouldn’t call it abstract, but it’s hard not to fall back on our previous successes. What do you think would happen if you started out with the bright colors you love, and then build it from there. (Just because you want to make an abstract painting, it doesn’t mean you can’t use the colors that you love. One of my favorite collages you’ve done is from a class you took this past year.(I think you actually mounted it on a square canvas to show us how to mount pieces.
Love the Georgia O’Keefe-ish flowers you’ve done!

  • First of all, I really like both versions of the painting. I can understand your feeling that the first version was unfinished when compared to your other art.
I love abstract art, but I also am challenged with it. I have come to the conclusion that I like some hard edges and shapes, and I definitely like a focal point within a composition. Other artists are successful at overall abstract, but it doesn’t work as well for me.
Keep trying and experimenting (as I know you will) and it will be beautiful. You really and truly are an inspiration.

  • I love it whether you call it abstract or not. I think I’d call it realistic abstraction!! I too love the under painting best but I love your experiments and think this one is gorgeous. The white makes me look deep inside to see the abstract colors.
I agree with you about Jane Davies DVD. I bought it several months ago and I also love her work. It is fun playing with her styles and I have also been participating in her post card project.
I love looking around your site. I haven’t posted until now but will be doing so much more as soon as the holidays are over. I have some of your DVD downloads and love them all.
