The good folks over at PanPastel were kind enough to send me some of their new Metallic PanPastels to try out.
There are six new metallics, I received four of them: Silver, Bronze, Rich Gold, and Pewter.
I mixed them up with my existing regular PanPastels and had some fun!
I like the glittery quality that the metallics create. They mix beautifully with the regular colors and do everything that regular PanPastels do: smudge, erase, mix, etc.
If you've never tried PanPastels before, you can buy some cute little sets. I also recommend picking up some of the Sofft Tools, which make applying the PanPastels really easy. I've tried using cosmetic sponges instead of the Sofft Tools and they just don't work as well. The two girls were done on watercolor paper (PanPastel likes paper with some tooth) and I used Clear Gesso on the stenciled sample to create even more tooth. (That's my Circles in Lines stencil, by the way.)
I have to confess that I was a bit intimidated to do the girls with the PanPastels. Working with sponges is a very different way of painting. But, I'm really glad that I stretched myself to try it. PanPastels are very forgiving (just smudge away or erase away mistakes) and that made it a bit easier. Sometimes I think that I don't challenge myself enough. So, I'm always glad when a new supply or a new challenge forces me out of my comfort zone!
What do you think? Are you a PanPastel fan?
Thanks for stopping by!
I am definitely a PanPastel fan but need to remember to use them more often. I LOVE your girls and those metallic PPs look awesome. One would never know you stepped out of your comfort zone. Wow. π

Beautiful! The Pan Pastels add such a softness to your art work that I love. You are always inspiring but this post has really inspired me to get back to my practice of sketching faces. I may even branch out and try my Pan Pastels – I just have the primary colors. Thank you!

Hi..I just love your faces with the pan pastels. You mentioned that you use clear gesso on one of them. Did you put the gesso, underneath the pan pastel?
It would be great if you had a class making these portraits. That would be awesome. I can’t stop staring at them!!

The subtleness of these metallics is gorgeous! They really bring dimension and fullness to such a flat, matte medium, without being “blingy”. Love how they play on your gorgeous portraits!
I have a few PanPastels, but am not very skilled at using them. You’ve inspired me to take them out and play.

Julie,
Oh I love PanPastels. I didn’t know they were making metallics. I love what you did with them. They’ll be going on my wish list today. I think you do stretch yourself as an a artist, you are always taking new classes and trying things in new ways. I love these portraits.

I really want to try PanPastels but am unsure how to seal them when finished. Do they smear a lot or set up pretty well on their own?

Beautiful faces! However I know nothing about panpastels – I assume they are like pastel chalk but in a little pan? And how does one seal the picture when done?

I was surprised to see the Pan Pastel portraits as I didn’t remember you ever using Pans like that in the past. Reading down it’s clear I was correct but having done it before or not, you did a wonderful job. There is something about the texture of the portraits that makes them just beautiful. I would say you get an exceptional for this “out of your box” experiment!

Julie,
I love the look of the metallic pastels in your faces. Fabulous.
You are just getting so good at the proportions etc.
I have only used the pastels a little and wonder about the messiness of them. Using a tool should alleviate some of that.
Do you find them messy?
What do you seal them with? That is something that has to be done or else I would just bump up on it and it would be ruined.
Thanks

I love your faces. The first face here is especially wonderful – the shading and “sculpturing”. She reminds me of the actress Karina Lombard!

Love your gals with Panpastel and that little extra shine gives them just a little extra feminine touch. Super! I wasn’t sure about adding these to my repertoire because I couldn’t quite picture how they would fit with the softer effect that I expect from this medium so thanks a bunch!!!

I must add that these are some of the best faces I’ve seen. Maybe I’m more of a realist that most. They are just stunning. I do like the close up of the rings that reveals the glimmer in the metallics. Way to experiment. What fun to get samples. You have certainly garnered their respect.

I’m going for the metallics for sure! I really like them because they give the chalk effect without the dust or harsh scratches regular pastels can give. I also like the misty effect with the soft transitions of color. The only down side is that they have to be fixed or the pastels keep transferring… forever. And not a workable fixative if in a journal or something that will be handled or back-to-back. I finally invested in expensive Golden fixative which has very, very little color change, does not spatter if you follow the directions, and once 100% dry is not sticky.

Beautiful work! Can you suggest a “starter set” that would be useful for me and anyone else that hasn’t tried pan pastels? There are so many different sets offered on there.
