Art Journal Every Day: Sketching in Airports

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

I brought my handy dandy travel watercolor kit with me on this last adventure.  I had some flight delays, so it came in handy for entertaining myself.  I spent the time sketching the people I saw.

I don't consider myself to be a talented sketcher, so I'm always shy about sketching in public and try hard to avoid the prying eyes of those around me.  I'm also super nervous about getting caught by the subject of my drawings.  So I do a lot of sketching of people who are on their phone or sleeping.  I usually start out each sketch convinced that there's no way I'll be able to capture what I see.  And then I'm (usually) pleasantly surprised by the outcome.  It's a lesson summed up best by the following quote:

So, I'm going to keep trying and hopefully I will get better and better!

Here is this week's linky list:

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I bet it would be interesting to see what your subjects think of your drawings. I think that you have done a wonderful job of catching their boredom and need for sleep:-)

  • Yes, your blog is so much fun. And you are too a talented sketcher. Jeesh. I felt like I was sitting in that airport. I’d love to know the story of the man in white. Does he always wear white? Does he wash his own clothes, with bleach or send them somewhere? Are his sheets all white?

  • I really enjoyed seeing your airport sketches and what a GREAT way to pass the time! I’d be nervous about “getting caught” too. Hope all the travel isn’t wearing you out too much.

  • I like the commentary that you write with your people – the observations make the pictures come to life! I’m afraid to try to sketch people in front of me too – bully for you for facing your fears!

  • I love your sketches! Where did you learn to draw like that? And would you ever consider teaching an online course in sketchbooking?
Because I really think you’re a fantastic teacher. You make everything seem so doable, and so fearless. And you have a great sense of humor.
I’m looking for such a class in drawing/sketching/watercoloring right now. I’m finding it hard to even find a book on the subject that works for me. Either they’re too formal, or too intimidating, or too silly…Call me Goldilocks!

  • Love what you share including the ending quote! I will be traveling to see my mom and now I know what to do with delays and layovers. Bringing watercolors and a small journal is a positive distraction. Thank you! You continue to be a huge inspiration on so many levels. By chance, how do you pack up your little travel kit to be able to pull out? Thanks for sharing.

  • I love your paintings! I feel exactly the same way about painting people, if someone ‘accidentally’ catches my eye while I’m drawing them I end up glancing this way and that like a numpty to try and throw them off the trail! Silly, huh?

  • I also feel shy about getting caught sketching people or having people look over my shoulder while I’m at it but I am getting just a teensy bit better at ignoring that feeling in favor of the experience of doing it. Airports and flights are good for creating these sketching opportunities, but Julie, since you are a NEW YAWKER I’ll suggest one of my favorite sketching places – the Staten Island Ferry. Free. People from all over the world. Not as many bumps as the subway. And there’s a breeze in the summer.
