ByeByeGoogleReader2
I don't know about you, but I love reading blogs.  I subscribe to more than 100 blogs at the moment.  And I keep track of all of them through Google Reader.  Unfortunately, Google is shutting Reader down on July 1.  Bummer.

Like so many other people, I went searching for a replacement.  I tried bloglovin and feedly, bothy highly recommended.  They are very slick and cool, with more of a Pinterest feel.  Highly visual.  But they don't work for the way I consume blogs.  You see, I don't read all 100 blogs every day.  I tend to check in with Google Reader a few times a week, and many times I simply scroll through, digesting the photos more than any text.  Bloglovin and feedly both force you to look at a single post at a time.  That doesn't work for me.

Luckily, I discovered The Old Reader.

OldReaderScreenshot
It's not remotely fancy and it doesn't even have all the bells and whistles that Google Reader has (which are few and far between), but the interface is almost exactly like Google Reader.  It allows me to quickly scroll through the content and I love that!

If you're looking for a new RSS reader, I highly recommend The Old Reader.  I've been using it for a few weeks now and it's working for me.  I was also able to easily import all of my subscriptions from Google Reader.  Yay!

Of course the easiest way to make sure you don't miss anything Balzer Designs is to subscribe to this blog via e-mail.  :)

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Do these readers draw their own information directly from the sites or are they getting their info from the blogger reader page which means they would be dead after july too. I’m currently using Feedly.

  • I tried The Old Reader, Bloglovin and Bloglines. I really like how The Old Reader works but it misses some blogs in my list… so right now I’m between them and Bloglovin….

  • I’d changed to Feedly because thats what most computer blogs recommended (it was also really easy to do so) but I’m not that keen on their layout either. I’ve just had a look at Old Reader but can’t understand the techy talk on how you import your data from Google Reader? At the moment I’m going to hae to stick with Feedly until I can sus it out…

  • If you go into Feedly’s preferences, you can alter the layout to “Titles Only” (Google Reader style), “Magazine” or “Cards” style, or a full article display. There are other preference options in Feedly that you can tinker with as well. Mary Walker: Feedly has promised it will have a solution in place soon to keep the service live after Reader goes down.

  • I hate to show my ignorance, but what do readers do? Does a reader store all of your blog subscriptions, does it give you a a little taste of each blog so you can can go read the whole post if you’re interested? I’m just guessing here…

  • I read blogs the same way you do, so was so excited to read your recommendation for a reader. Google Reader is my HOME PAGE and has been for several years. When I saw that news flash about them going away, I was pretty sad. I don’t adapt well to change sometimes. This is one of those times.

  • Agreed. The Old Reader is perfect for my needs. I tried a few of the others but because they’re so image-rich, it took forever to navigate through my feeds and I ended up skipping most of them altogether. With TOR there was no painful transition from GR either! YAY!

  • Julie, I just found The Old Reader last night and I am with you, didn’t like the functionality of Feedly and Bloglovin. Tried both as well, so did another google search last night and found The Old Reader. A friend pointed out that you posted on your blog about it, so I thought I would chime in and say thank you for your post. I think if it’s good enough for Julie, it’s going to be good enough for me. Seriously, I am so glad it’s pretty much the same as the Google Reader!
