I recently handed out two birthday gifts.  One was a card I gave to my friend Cheryl:

CherylCardOutside-wm
CherylCardOutside-wm
CherylCardOutside-wm
The flags were made with tissue paper that I stained.

I used a vellum envelope for a really pretty presentation:

CherylCardEnvelope-wm
The second was a gift for my Father:

Orange1-wm
Orange1-wm
Orange1-wm
The tag was done with watercolor and then I slipped it into my typewriter for the sentiment (and wrote a personal note on the back).  The package is wrapped up with tissue paper and sealed with washi tape.

I always look at gift giving as an opportunity to make something pretty, though not necessarily the gift itself.  It can be enormously nerve wracking to hand over a hand made gift (who knows if the recipient will like it).  But a bit of pretty packaging or a lovely card — they almost always make the recipient smile!  I'm trying to get braver about giving my art to people, but I'm so nervous that they won't like it.  Trying to get over that.

How do you feel about giving people a little bit of your art?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I cherish handmade gifts.
Several years ago my step son (then in his late 20’s) began painting. He painted with any paint he could find and on any surface handy. Because he lives in Florida and we are in Ohio, we never saw his painting until he presented one to us. We loved it. Can’t say it is our style, but we framed it and proudly hung it in our home. We now have 3!
I love these painting because they were made for us.
That doesn’t really answer your question, but from the receiver’s end, I can’t think of a better gift than something from the hand and heart. Thanks for sharing your art!

  • Love the cards and the wrapping. I’m just like you, too nervous to give away my art. I think it’s awesome when a friend says what they want or if they express a wish to have something I’ve made, but without the question I keep my stuff and don’t give it away. 🙂

  • I like the banners and the peaceful colors of the b-day card Julie. The tag for your father is hauntingly beautiful. I love to receive art as a gift (and rarely do), but do not give it much. I have made mini-albums for folks and I have received nice compliments.

  • While I completely understand the hesitancy to give handmade art as a gift, I love receiving it as a gift. I just haven’t been able to give my art away yet; definitely something I have to work on. Like Susan I’ve received art that is not necessarily my style but it has broaden my tastes and taught me that I am more open than I thought previously.

  • Lovely cards Julie. I always make friends cards on their birthdays. Often I take a famous painting and Photoshop their heads on them with an appropriate saying.

  • This whole crafting obsession I’m in started with making cards and then making gifts for nieces and nephews, which I still do. I make them personalized books and they’re well received. Only adult gifts I’ve given have been mini books about the recipient. I think anyone would be thrilled to get your art! That tag for your father? Wow.

  • Love the card and tag. I too am comfortable with giving those away. I have made mini albums and I do get nervous but since most of the album are photographs it is not that bad. Not sure if I could give away a canvas – someone might not like my style…

  • I love your cards and gift wrap. I’m sure the recipient will cherish their gift from you. I recently made and gave “She Art” Cards to my Granddaughters for their Birthdays. They are young, but seemed to appreciate the beauty in the handmade card. I know I enjoyed making them 🙂

  • Hi Julie!
I love what you did with the card and the packaging.
I’ve been giving my art as gifts for the past couple of years to my mom, my sister, and one of my brothers. I know they like what I’ve given them, but it’s taken me a long time to part with anything I’ve made. I do create most of my greeting cards, which I’ve been doing for years, and people always like them. Of course, I would be mortified if I found out that someone didn’t like what I gave them!

  • Such a cool B-day card! And the tag and wrapping for your dad is awesome–love the simplicity of only two colors on the tag, contrasting with the delicious portrait that emerges from such simple roots. Plus, I am partial to orange. 😉
As for the gifting, I love to receive handmade gifts, love to buy handmade gifts, and am shy/self-conscious about giving gifts handmade by me. But I do it for my most special peeps because I know they appreciate it, and it is giving them a piece of me. When something is crafted with a specific recipient in mind, the maker is thinking of them throughout the entire process, and that is a lot of love that goes into the final product. <3

Ugghhhh. But i do love your tag and the nice card too

  • I grew up reading little house on the prairie…..thinking that the best gifts are homemade….but it puts a LOT of unnecessary pressure to have to think of and create individual gifts for each person I love. Am wondering why I did not see that the presentation is also a gift and that might be a more do-able project….as well as creatively satisfying. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts! (I am very shy about even showing my art let alone giving it away eeeeeeek)

  • I love the card with the banner inside! I bet your dad is gonna keep that tag forever! I am never sure about giving handmade gifts. I don’t go all out if I think they won’t realize how much work I put into it. I would never dream that you would have any anxiety about it though.

  • I think as I grow as an artist, I find it easier and easier to give art as gifts (or part of it). As I know from myself I hardly ever keep cards, mostly because I don’t know what else to do with them. But I usually keep the card making a little low key, unless I know (say my grandmother) the person would keep it.

  • How do I feel about giving art-full gifts? I LOVE doing it, but I often face that same fear of either the recipient not liking it or of them not really “getting” it – so I do just as you do and at least make a card/tag or something small (IF I have the time). Sometimes, though, I’ll make something and then love it so much and then be afraid to give it, not because I don’t think they’ll like it, but because I’m afraid they’ll just throw it away. 🙁 If I really thought they would, I might just keep it for myself. Aren’t I a naughty, naughty girl?
I do want to mention, though, that you would NEVER have to be afraid to give ME an art gift – I would certainly LOVE anything you make! (And, seriously, I think most people would!) 😉

  • How do I feel about giving art-full gifts? I LOVE doing it, but I often face that same fear of either the recipient not liking it or of them not really “getting” it – so I do just as you do and at least make a card/tag or something small (IF I have the time). • I’ve made holiday cards for years and years. Some of them were boarder line but they were all handmade. I just know how I feel getting some mass produced flashy card that was way over priced — I mean 100,000s of people get variations of the same card. Whatever I make is from my hand and intended for a single individual. I’m not competing with the card companies. I’m giving a little of myself and my skill to someone I care about. No card company can ever get close to doing that.

  • I don’t like giving my art as in the wall art as gifts because I am afraid of imposing my taste– BUT– I have started giving away the accessories that have been licensed with my art on them!
Sooo my mom got a cutting board with my art on it for mother’s day ( I mean she will get….shhhhh) and I have been giving my friends cosmetic bags with my art on them. They love them!
Love the banner card– would love to know how you did that!

  • I’ve always given out handmade cards since I fell in love with making them. My mom’s b-day is in September and I give her handmade Christmas cards to send out instead of store bought. I was very nervous at first to give out my cards, but now it’s to the point that people who know me would feel slighted if I went the Hallmark route.

  • Making a handmade card is wonderful if the person who receives it appreciates them, but I think that the joy is in making one is not worrying too much about how the receiver will feel. I always make a copy and enjoy it myself.
