With a little more than an hour of free time last Friday, my Mom and I popped over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, commonly known as "The Met," for a quick blast of art.

Lobby
The Met is ginormous, so you could really spend several days and still not quite see everything.  With a limited amount of time, we decided to head for the Impressionists gallery and spied this little gem on the way there:

Artdecowallpaper
I'm a huge fan of all kinds of repeating patterns and this one is just masterful.  Love everything about it!

Once we got to the Impressionists gallery we saw a great Matisse…

ToplessMatisse
…and another, which I assumed was a study for his painting "Dance."

However, when I read the placard I learned that it is, instead, a painting of his studio where the painting "Dance" happened to be sitting.  So, it's a painting of a painting.  Pretty cool.

Derain
This Derain called out to me from across the room.  A very arresting portrait.  Mom snapped a photo of me with the painting.  I feel like he's looking at me…

We also found this lovely little Monet:

Monet
I call it little because many of the paintings are giant.

Horses
And sometimes, even bigger than giant.

AsianArt
We ran past some sculpture…

Headlessculpture
…including a lovely Rodin:

KissSculpture
(As a side note, The Rodin Museum in Paris has to be one of my most favorite museums that I've ever been to.  I highly recommend a visit if you ever get the opportunity.)

We ended our visit by wandering through the Met's new-ish (opened 2011) Islamic wing.

ArchesWithMom
Gorgeous carpets with amazing patterns!

In fact, there were beautiful patterns absolutely everywhere.

And just before we left, we spied this lovely bunny bowl:

Don't you just wish you could take things home with you from the museum?!

The next time you have the chance, why not pop into your local museum for just an hour?  I suspect you'll come away with days of inspiration.  I know that I did!

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. I'm already getting some great feedback on my "Getting Started with Deli Paper" online class, which went live yesterday!

  • Thank you. I do go to our museum, an hour away in Atlanta, but I so miss the Met and MOMA. This was wonderful!
And I am getting so much out of your deli paper class. The faces in your journal just blow me away. I wish I could go to NJ and take your class on faces. But I’ll settle for your online inspiration, for now.
