100Canvases-sm
As previously mentioned, I took a week-long "Expressionistic Figure Painting" workshop at The Art Students League with artist Barbara Yeterian.  We worked on our paintings in twenty-minute increments and I took photos at each breaking point.

I could have used a little more time with this painting, especially in the background, but I'm going to call it done.  And I think this painting really shows my growth during the week-long class.  It's much freer than the first one.  There's emotion and a story.  Hooray!  And my biggest take-away: don't do the harsh outline I always do.  This is definitely a painting style that I want to continue to work in.  I have a tendency to outline everything and I'm excited about getting away from that and moving towards more color blocking.  I think the hands in this painting are a great example of how well that technique works.

It's a terrible and blurry photo, but here I am with my classmates, the teacher, and the models:

And here are all three canvases from class together:

I've got to get 84 more canvases done by the end of the year if I'm going to meet my self-imposed deadline of 100 by December 31, 2013.  So, I'd best get to painting!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • How nice to see a pic of the models. I really like how the 3 canvases look together. You will need a larger home to show case your work, or maybe a storage unit (better yet, a gallery).
I saw no less than 3 LO’s from you in the spring Somerset Memories. Nice!

  • Love these! All of them. That’s so interesting about color blocking versus the outline. I have to say, I loved the other hands just as much but I do see what you’re saying.

  • You have me looking into the ASL and next time I come into the city I’m going to check it out. I love the closeup of the face and the step by step views. You keep me motivated, Julie. Thanks for posting. I love watching your progress and credit you with some of mine.

  • You really are progressing! I am glad you abandoned the harsh outline–and your use of color to bring out the forms is really outstanding. You don’t NEED outlines!
