Back in July 2012 Wilna Furstenberg (one of my scrappy crushes) asked me to contribute two scrapbook pages to her online art class, offered through Two Peas in a Bucket. She didn't end up using my pages, but that means that I get to share them with you today!
Wilna asked me to do a layout using wax. It's not one of my favorite substances, but here's what I came up with:
STEP ONE: Scribble all over your background with crayons and use a mini iron to partially melt them into the paper along with some beeswax.
STEP TWO: Transfer text into the warm wax. (I'm thinking of including this technique in my "Getting Started with Transfers" online class. It was super fun.)
STEP THREE: Create the rest of the layout!
For this next page Wilna asked me to use stencils. No problem! I used the stenciling newspaper technique I shared in this post.
Wilna also asked me to put together a brief audio recording answering some questions about the layout. For today's blog post, I turned it into a short video, if you'd like to watch:
Sharing a Laugh from Julie Balzer on Vimeo.
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. Speaking of Wilna, she and I were both guests on yesterday's "Paperclipping Roundtable" podcast. You can listen to it here.

I think Wilna is the perfect person to have a scrapping crush on.

I just took Wilna’s workshop and totally understand the crush, now I have two more bonus projects weehee! You did a fab job. By the way, you should know there are plenty of us that have Julie Fei-Fan Balzer crushes too and some of us would like to know…when are you coming to Australia to teach some messy classes? Heehee!

Lovely!! Oh, my!! The layering of your stenciling on the second layout is so rich and beautiful. Stitching the vellum on top is brilliant. And, I don’t have much experience with wax, but I love the way that text transferred. Yes, please, on including it with your Getting Started with Transfers class!

I love the idea of using the newspaper. What a great idea! I love your artsy backgrounds and your awesome layouts. I also like how you added the sewing to the layout. I recently moved my sewing machine to my craft table so I would use it more in my layouts. I feel it adds that extra “umph” to a page or any piece actually. Thank you so much for sharing! ~Jo Ann

The first layout seems very different from your usual bright, bold style: It kind of has a delicate look, with the pastels and all that white space. Very pretty. Thanks so much about the info on focal points – I think this is what has been missing from my art journal pages.

Julie (my Idol!), I have two questions about the techniques you shared today. (1) How did you apply the text page? Do you just lay it down and iron over it? Or was there glue/medium used? (2) What do you do with your newspaper art? Do you cut it down and glue it to canvas or some other substrate? Do you cut it down and glue it in a journal? I love the idea of working with newspaper, I just don’t know how to “save” it?? Many thanks 🙂
