ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

Today I thought I'd share a short technique video.  I recently recorded a video of me stenciling on one of my favorite surfaces: newspaper!  I used the newspaper in the video to create a scrapbook page background, but it would easily translate into a background for an art journal page.

Check it out:

Here's the scrapbook page:

Here are links to all the products I used in the video:

Unfortunately the 6×6 Entrelac, 6×6 Corn Flowers, 12×12 Scallop Flower, and 6×6 Circle Regiment stencils appear to be sold out at the moment.

Here is this week's linky list:

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Such a rich page and not many tools were needed to create it. Always inspiring to see how many things you can create with just a couple of materials. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

  • Aaaaaaaaaah, great!!!!!! I love the layers and the use of newspaper that won’t go in bins, even if they’re recycling bins.I’m afraid I’ll have your stencils will all sell out very quickly. I hope to buy them from the US because even with the shipping it’s cheaper than buying them in France. Thanks for the video.

  • Hi, Julie,
Thanks for the video…marvelous, as always. I’ve wanted to use newspaper to give me a larger expanse than 12×12, but I’m concerned about how it will afffect any pictures or ephemera that I might attach. Does the gesso somehow neutralize or seal the acid content in the newspaper?

  • Fun! Why did you use the newspaper? the size? does the newspaper text show through? I have tried some stenciling on some foreign newsprint, but you are much more unrestrained and successful than I…oh I didn’t use gesso – ah.

  • Julie, I noticed that you seem to have put tape on the edges of some of your smaller stencils – is that to give yourself a “handle” or for some other reason?

  • That is so beautiful! I never would’ve thought that newspaper would hold up to gesso, let alone paint on top of it. I’ll definitely have to give this technique a try because I’ve got some Goldens and stencils that need some loving!

  • First, I REALLY appreciate the video. So inspiring! Second, thanks for having the Linky. I’ve been down the rabbit hole and visited several very inspiring blogs and ordered a Day by Day Zentangle calendar from greydenpress.com as a result. In the meantime its time to create a page and play along! Thanks for the push. 🙂
