When I knew I was going to Colorado, I arranged to have a play date with my friend and fellow stencil designer, Ronda Palazzari.

Ronda1
Little did she know that I'd end up staying at her house for three nights (thanks to the storm).  What a lovely place to be stuck!  Ronda is great.  Her family is amazing.  Her house is fantastic.  Her studio is just gorgeous.  In fact, it's so nice in her studio that the whole family hangs out there!

Ronda'sRoom
Check out the extra folding tables.  Most nights there were five of us in there — working, talking, watching movies.  Lots of fun!

Ronda and I spent a lot of time making art.  In fact, she introduced me to Liquitex's low-odor spray paint, which I promptly ordered online.  I used them on this canvas:

Canvas
The colors are bright and it dries super fast.  Here's another example:

Scan032-wm
You can see how bright and opaque that yellow is over the purple.  I can't wait until mine arrive!

I also did several sketches with a Stabilo Water Soluble Pencil.

Practicing and practicing — trying to get better with every drawing.

I taught Ronda how to carve a stamp.  And she made this gorgeous feather:

RondaStamp
I made a little abstract design, which can be used to create a flower:

Stamp
You can read all about our stamp making adventures on Ronda's blog.

The day before I left town Ronda took me to a crop where I got to hang out with all sorts of cool ladies including Emily, Arleigh, and Vivian.  I met a whole bunch of awesome crafty Coloradans, including Nancy, who made me feel like a real celebrity when she said, "You look an awful lot like Julie Fei-Fan Balzer."  :)

The crop was held at Archiver's.  I had never been and I have to say I went on a little shopping spree!  I was also delighted to discover some of my stencils hanging up for sale.

Stencils
Seeing them like that makes me feel so proud.  Sometimes I feel like this whole art job of mine is not real.  This was a pinch-me kind of moment.

Honestly, it was the best canceled flight experience of my entire life.  Ronda is a great friend, a talented artist, and a fantastic hostess.

RondaPainting
I hope to get stuck in Colorado again!

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. There's a cute photo of Ronda and me creating side-by-side in this post on her blog.

I can only imagine the thrill of seeing your product on the shelves of Archiver’s. Love playing with your stencils myself.

  • Hi Julie: I absolutely LOVE everything here!!!! The sketches are some of the nicest I’ve seen. The first one in particular is ravishing!!!! But don’t get me wrong, they are all awesome. I had to stare at the first one though…a new Julie perhaps? A progressive Julie? A growing/changing/transforming Julie? And that spray on picture. WOW WOW WOW is that sensationally yummalicious. By the time I got to the second one I was literally drooling! The second one is SOOOOO precise with the stencils as was the first.
As far as your stencils being at the crop – how stoked is that! Yes my love, you ARE famous, a celebrity and a hell of a nice chickidee in my books. Lovies, Samara
oh, ps I thought of this listening to the interview. Julie, I lost the ning to the mix the paint etc. class. can you send it to me again. also, when I went to mix my Liquitex BASIC PAINTS again, I spritzed, then I soaked and they did not get soft. In fact, I was able to pick them out of my tray in one piece. They would not “come back.” I added extender and even thinner. Any thoughts, suggestions? I am going to try to take my container (it is one of those with 24 section cups in it) back to Michael’s and see if they will return it based on this. I would love to hear what I did. So could you send me the ning again please? I switched to Chrome and it didn’t transfer from explorer. Thanks Lovey. Samara

  • Oh, what a good place to get snowed in. I lived in colorado for nine years, went through three different blizzards and enjoyed staying inside (except to shovel the snow off the sidewalk for the postman and the kiddos going to school) Yes, they go to school in a foot of snow LOL. I laught because now I live in Texas and if it snows an inch, everything closes down.
I wish I was crafting then, but I had two kiddos and a husband to take care of, besides I was sewing up a storm. Now I don’t sew much, but I love my acrylics, stencils, and sprays.
Love coming here to see what you are doing every day.
    Hugs,

  • I’ve been wondering about that spray paint and am glad to see you have tried it with such beautiful results. I might have to check it out too!
Ok… I want Rhonda’s studio. I would never leave that place!
Congratulations on the stencils. I can imagine you would feel so proud! I’d probably be holding them up and saying, “hey everybody! This is me! I am Balzer Designs!” I am sure you were much classier than that.
You are so inspiring. Thanks for all that you share.

  • What a fabulous place to be stuck!
I really like the Liquitex sprays. I think I see brilliant blue, medium magenta, vivid lime and cadmium yellow-light on your canvas…am I right? Did you also use some of the transparent colors, like quinacridone magenta and phthalo blue? Heck, I should just ask you which ones you used. Would you mind sharing which ones you used?
I’ve been using some of your new 6″stencils and LOVING them so much that I keep going back for more of them and for the large ones as well. I’ve been using them a lot in journal pages, and have blogged some of them.
Oh, and you DO look a lot like Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, by the way! LOL!
