You've been asking about when I'm heading back to the West Coast, well here it is! I will be at Jenny Doh's CrescendoH Studios on January 19 & 20, 2013!!
The best part is that it's a full weekend workshop! I've been dying to teach a multi-day workshop for a while now. I think it's the best way to actually get into the teacher's head and get a wonderfully layered project finished! You can only get so much from a one-day class. Two-days is super exciting to me because there are so many things that I want to share and one-day is never enough time to do it all! I really hope you'll join me for a weekend of awesome art making!
Here are the deets:
The Amazing Tape Bound Junque Journal 207 N. Broadway, Studio L Santa Ana, CA 92701 |
"You will leave this intensive two-day workshop with a beautiful tape-bound journal filled with colorful hand-painted papers. We will make our own stamps and stencils, explore several methods of monoprinting, create plenty of hand-painted patterns, play with color, make our own decorative tape, design our journal covers, paint in layers, and stitch together a fabulous one-of-a-kind art journal!." — Julie Fei-Fan Balzer SCHEDULE for Both Saturday and Sunday:
|
You can see the class website and sign-up here.
So, what will you be learning?
We're going to make our own fancy stamps.
We're going to be painting faces.
There will be lots of layering prints and painting in order to create unique papers.
I'll show you how to make your own stencils.
We'll also be making our own decorative tape.
You'll learn how to do the coolest binding ever for your journal.
I'm going to be sharing my tips and techniques for making "messy" look great!
- I'm going to share my Gelli Printing secrets (including layered Gelli Prints).
- We'll go through the basics of color mixing.
- I'll share my stenciling tips and tricks.
- We'll be doing tons of layering and talking about what works best.
- I'll help you develop cool patterns of your own.
Basically, we're going to make a mess and have a really good time doing it!
I'm not sure when else I'll be able to teach a two-day class, so this may be the only time this class is ever taught. I'm super duper excited about it and I hope you'll be there!
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. For those of you who can't make the trip to California, my "Getting Started with Color Mixing" class is available online right now! Check out just a few of the student comments:
"Hey there Julie….I loved all of the videos! They were easy to understand and simple to follow!" — Debbie
"Loved this class. I feel like I totally get it now. I've read books galore and somehow never quite understood the point of a color wheel. I used to think — of course red and green are opposites on the color wheel, I don't need a visual to show me that. Now I know… red is not red is not red 😉 I especially loved how you showed the different mediums – and now when I start with any new medium I know I can start with basic colors for my first purchase." — Lela
"Happy New Year Julie! I just wanted to tell you one thing…I wish you could be my teacher on all subjects I want to learn. You are so fabulous! You have such a gift for taking a subject, breaking it down, explaining it clearly and making it fun in the process. Thanks for sharing your great gift of teaching. I love this class!" — Becky
"I took a class for color and it took three hours to explain what you explained in 10 minutes. Thank you!!!!!!" – Annette
Oh Julie… wished I lived closer… your class looks amazing… would love to make that journal… and learn from you with your gorgeous faces and backgrounds… any thought of an online faces class… I would love that…

I love that page of layering in the open art journal Julie. I en joyed my one-day class with you at AE, but two-days would be twice as much fun!

First, I’m in the online color-mixing class. The videos are excellent. Julie, you are a very thoughtful teacher– you examine what you are teaching from the view of someone who does not already know what to do, and you build your instruction for those students. That’s what a good teacher does.
Second, If you are ever in the Tampa Bay area and can teach this journal class, I hope I can be in it.
I think it sounds like more than 2 days… just to let people mull the ideas and techniques and create some variations to cement the learning. Also it would last longer and that would be a delight!
Third, I want to thank you for sharing your art journey on this blog, your podcast, and in your classes. You make a unique and valuable contribution to my own journey.

Any West coasters reading this – give yourself a treat and take a Julie class – they are awesome. I am lucky enough to live on East coast and have been fortunate enough to take a bunch of Julie classes and all I can say is that I wish she would teach more of them. They rock!

I got so excited when I saw So Cal at the top of your post. I thought for a minute it meant South Carolina! Please consider coming to do a class somewhere in the southeast! How about Donna Downey’s new studio in Charlotte, NC? For now, though, I will sign up for your online classes, starting with the Gelli Plate, which I have and LOVE!

Well that just figures. I’m visiting family in CA but I won’t be out there until the 23rd. Lol my timing is awesome.
I worked in Santa Ana for 10 years and there was never anything cool like Jenny Doh’s studio. 🙂
