I recently saw this Project Life spread from Amy Tan:

Pl_1
However, when I first looked at it, I thought it was a layout.  Well, that got me thinking!  I love the design of the "Design G" page protector that Amy used.

There's a similar 12×12 design by We R Memory Keepers that I like very much as well.

PageprotectorBecause I mistakenly thought the Project Life spread was a layout, I decided to make a layout inspired by Project Life, without the page protector.  Here's how it turned out:

You&MeBabe-wm
It was super labor intensive.  Took me a while to pull together, but I love it!

You&MeBabeDetail1-wm
I found the quote on Pinterest and used one of my favorite alphabet stamp sets to stamp it.

You&MeBabeDetail2-wm
I rarely using supplies "right out of the box."  Instead, I like to personalize them a bit.  I used a yellow marker to add a shadow to the black text on the "happy" card.  I also used a black pen to outline the parts of "time with you."

You&MeBabeDetail3-wm
This card got the same outline and shadowing applied.  I also added the dashed line running around the card.  I like how a bit of doodling can do so much!

You&MeBabeDetail4-wm
Even on a "neat and clean" layout a little bit of paint and ink is a welcome addition!

You&MeBabeDetail5-wm
I popped portions of this heart up with some foam adhesive in order to create some dimension on an otherwise extremely flat layout.

This was a wonderful experiment.  I'm thrilled with how it all turned out.  It's a great way to capture the look of Project Life (and use all those great Project Life supplies) without committing to the year-long project.

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. The comments on Thursday's podcast post are all so interesting and thoughtful.  You guys blow me away with your awesome-ness!  The winner of a seat in the year long Life Book class is…

  • I am going to spend the rest of the day wondering why I didn’t think of this: Using the protectors as a ‘sketch’ is a brilliantly simple idea! I am one of those people who does not want to commit to project life but love the look and it’s a great way to get a lot on to a page! I love both of the examples here too – Thank you!

  • I really like how the yellow shadowing came out. You sure have a steady hand Julie. I really like this LO and yes, what a good idea to use the page protector layout as a sketch.

  • Congratulations Isabelle. I guess this means I’ll have to sign up for the class. It’s just what I’m looking for to keep me accountable and inspired with my art journal.

  • Yes, supplies are fine, but need to be embellished.
I like the lay-out style. Makes me want to get busy.

  • Congrats Isabelle!
Julie, love the idea about modifying store bought elements with paints/pens….I have never done that. Also pretty clever with the page protector/layout reversal idea. It is amazing what creativity emerges when we color outside the lines!

  • I love your layout! This post was great timing for me. I’m really interested in Project Life but would like to do it digitally. I was kind of stuck on the page protector thing (although I did find some digital downloads), but your layout made me realize that I don’t even need page protectors! Thank you for the inspiration!
