I have long loved snipping words out of book pages to create book page poems like this:

14-poem
It's always fun to see what you can create.

However, this time I decided to create poems by redacting a single book page.  Much more challenging.

Guiltysecretrepeated-wm
Guiltysecretrepeated-wm
Guiltysecretrepeated-wm
Guiltysecretrepeated-wm
Guiltysecretrepeated-wm

Making these is like putting together a puzzle.  It's a great brain teaser.  Plus, it's a lovely way to stitch together a little fantasy story and get yourself in the right mindset to create some cool art.  A creative warm-up of sorts.

I think my favorite is the fourth one down, "Love & War."  Which one is your favorite?

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. Thanks for the all of your kind words about the Art Journal Every Day: December kit!  There were more than 400 comments!  The lucky winner is:

Congratulations, Michele!  E-mail me with your mailing address and I'll make sure that you get your kit!

P.P.S. We're hurricane ready here.  I've got posts set to auto-publish through Wednesday, so even if I lose electricity, you'll still get your daily dose of Balzer Designs!  Until Thursday…but let's cross our fingers that the power stays on!

Julie Fei-Fan Balzer

Based outside of Boston, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer is a painter, printmaker, and collage artist who constructs vibrant compositions. Her artwork investigates the interplay of identity and perception, inviting viewers to take a longer look. Julie works in layers, both physically and metaphorically, exploring what is visible and what is concealed. Passionate about connecting with and inspiring other artists, she shares her expertise through in-person workshops and her online classroom at MyArtPractice.com. Julie's achievements include high-profile clients, multiple publications - including her book, “Carve Stamp Play” - and exhibits in New York City and throughout Massachusetts. She is a graduate of Brown University.

  • What an impressive idea. I never thought of doing something like this. Now, as I hunker down for the storm, I will pull out some old book pages I’ve been saving, and do some art ala Julie style. Thanks for the mega dose of inspiration!!!
And thanks for prepping things ahead of the storm so we can have you through the week! I’m with you on hoping we don’t lose power!

  • Fantastic idea, Julie, indeed a good exercise for the little grey cells.
I like the last piece best, because it immediately set me thinking about how the story might continue.
The extract I like the least is the “Love and War” one, because I do not agree to these two being alike at all.

  • This is cool, but my favorite redacted phrase is, “One good woman in the world, every married man should think his own wife was she.” Of course, that’s not exactly how it reads in the book (your’s is better)!
I’ve been watching the news this morning and am feeling VERY fortunate that Sandy didn’t “hit” FL. Hope everyone heeds the warnings and stays safe.

  • Had to try it on a page of my own. Here’s what I came up with: “A shock; guilty. Unfit for happiness, condemned. changing to a less formal state which passes an inferior level. Deserved, fitting; equip to control or overlook fault.

  • Julie,
    Wishing everyone safety just now.
I do love the first three book page poems as they are most creative and mysterious.
    Thanks for sharing.

  • I think Hope at Last is my fave.
Julie, I’m not surprised you have posts ready to go, just in case! I hope its not necessary! When you said you had to go without hot water, I hoped that would be the worst of it.
The eye of Sandy came ashore a couple of hours ago. Here, the winds are gusting like crazy, and people around us are losing power. Not us yet. Don’t want to talk about it — might jinx us! No school tomorrow again! Everyone’s home, safe, together.
Hope your power stays on. Stay safe!

  • I wanted to let you know you are in my prayers. I hope your power stays on. It looks like it is out in areas not to far from yours. Be safe.

  • Julie, I too really loved your redacted poems. I have a friend who has book sales & she gets tons of books (!) that she sells all the time. I forwarded your email to her and she thought it was touching & brilliant … she also asked me if I wanted a couple hundred books to redact my own poems … I was thinking maybe 10, instead :O)
I also read your emails everyday and it really is a joy these days. Keep on doing what you’re doing!
p.s. I’m very glad you’ve got your power back on–we lost ours too. Big bummer–but hilarious too–found miners lights. Too funny for words.
