The Weekend Five: One-Minute Sketches

I'm taking a figure drawing/painting class at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) here in NYC.  On Wednesday we had to do a series of one-minute sketches, focused on shading rather than line.  And we had to use a big clunky graphite bar.  Eek!

Here are my five favorite:

I have a lot of trouble getting the whole figure on the page.  I always end up cutting off the legs.  Something to work on.

Hope you're having a fantastic weekend!  Thanks for stopping by!

  • I like the shadow/lights on the second drawing (the leg and bumb) and you captured the shape of the kneeling figure real well too! It’s pretty difficult to get the shades right with this material, great job!

  • love your one-minute sketches – what an awesome idea. may have to try it – but I think I’ll use paint – great way to just go for the ‘essence’ of the subject. good luck with the legs… LOL.

  • Try this to fix working off the page. Before you start drawing. Study your subject then look at your paper and image the shape onto the page. As if your mind is a copy machine applying the image on the paper. Get a clear feel for where the top bottom and sides will fall on the page then begin.

  • I especially love the second one. Beautiful. Glad they were only one minute and they didn’t have to hold those poses!
