I want to thank everyone who has listened to the Adventures in Arting podcast.  The last episode was downloaded more than 8,000 times!  And I've got a brand new podcast for you today:

Mom and I chatted with Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine Editor and all-around fabulous person, Jenn Mason.

Apronshot
Here's a little bit about her:

Jenn Mason lives a double life. Part artist, part editor. Day-to-day she wears her press hat at Cloth Paper Scissors magazine headquarters, by night and weekend she is trudging through flea markets, painting, assembling, creating, looking for inspiration, or just dreaming. You're most likely to bump into her in Brookline, MA.

Here is some of her recent artwork:

On the podcast we talk about Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine, Jenn's career path, art vs. craft, and how to balance working and being an artist with being a Mom.

If you have comments or questions, I know that we'd love to hear them!

  • I really love these podcasts. I especially love that you guys went into the “Art” vs. “Craft” thing. A while back someone I know made this big fuss about how she was NOT a crafter (heavens to Betsy!) and for some reason that made me really bristle. It was nice to hear a discussion on that topic- I loved the point that in the Renassiance, the “craftspeople” were really artists who specilized. And I loved the point about how on PRunway, the judges ALWAYS point out good craftsmanship. Maybe we need to start a renaissance for the word “craft” -it’s not JUST about the little projects you did at summer cap with plastic supplues. Thanks for the insight, and for the food for thought. I’ll be wearing my crafter badge proudly from now on!

  • Thank you so much for this podcast!! I loved the part about discussions you have about being an artist and how the follow up questions make you feel like you were lying. That is so me!! I was painting while waiting for my son’s soccer game to start last weekend which brought on lots of questions like “what are you doing?”, “why are you painting over that?”, “what is it going to be?” etc…It was the first time I had declared myself as an artist to people who didn’t really know me. I was so nervous and flustered about their reactions I felt I had to further explain and I DID end up accidentally lying. I said I was a multi media artist instead of mixed media artist. Of course this brought on more questions and more flusteredness (is that a word?) UGH! I also loved the part about “Art” vs. “Craft” but I won’t go on and on about that although I could 🙂

  • I just listened to this while making dinner and really enjoyed it. It was so encouraging to hear Jenn’s story and to hear that she too struggled with the whole art vs. craft thing. I thought that was only me. I love her approach and am going to adopt it for myself. If I am creating, who cares? I also thought your mom made so many great points about our need to label and the snootiness that occur. All three of you did a great job of elevating the art of creating – whatever it may be. Yeah! Thank you so much for the inspiration!

  • Hello Julie & Jen! I know this was a long time ago but I am going back and listening to old episodes and so I had to comment.
I am happy to be a crafter but I often talk about the time I spend doing my crafting work as time spent doing art – it’s my art time. I think that is because it captures more of what that time and process means to me. Art is a soul-feeding activity; it has a deeper connection. I have found that art is not optional in my life. If I ignore or squeeze out time for one type of activity art will come out in another form. Craft feels like something that is beautiful and well-made and done with the hands and so I am proud to be a crafter. But art is Creation that comes from the soul and so even if I am “just” scrapbooking, I am an artist too.
