May Flaum is teaching a new class at Big Picture Classes, called Kit-tastic.

Image001

From the Big Picture website: "Does it take you WAY too long to decide which supplies to use on a layout? Would you like to learn a solution to this and a way to dive in and get creating fantastic projects?

Whether you have packaged kits that you’ve never even opened or an overflowing paper tote, want to learn how to create your own kits so that you can be more efficient packing for crops or are just looking for some scrapbooking inspiration, this is the class for you.

In Kit-tastic, May Flaum will lead you through four weeks of ideas, inspiration, scrapbook layouts and cards. She will show you how to bring your supplies together to make kits – and get the most from your creative time."

If you would like to win a spot in Kit-tastic, leave a comment in the comments section of this blog answering the following question:

What is something a teacher can do above and beyond the norm to make an online class awesome for you?

  • I think a teacher goes above and beyond when she answers your question during a class and shows you how to do something. I love video demonstrations the best and a PDF so I can remember the instructions.

  • I think that a great teacher is not phased by even the most simplistic question. Sometimes we feel a bit stupid when we ask questions but a great teacher takes the time and effort to make us feel that ne question is stupid.

  • The best thing an on-line teacher can do is “do what they say they will do”. If an instructor says they will check and interact with the message boards frequently, then they should. I actually think May Flaum is the best at interacting online with her students.
Also, detailed instruction is ALWAYS appreciated!

  • I think good quality videos, non-annoying music for speeded versions, talking through a process, pictures of all supplies, checking message boards/emails for questions are all important. If an instructor can find a way to personalize it for me or find a way for all students to connect with each other, that is even better.

  • Thanks for the awesome blog post this morning. So many cool things to explore!
An example of a teacher doing something above and beyond the norm to make an online class awesome for me is demonstrating different ways to approach the project. We do not all have the same supplies, so show me how to do it with the recommended supplies, and then how I might accomplish similar results using other recommendations. You are great at this Julie with your online classes. Ex: Use a straw to blow alcohol inks versus using a can of air. I know this sounds simple, but unlike a live classroom setting where supplies are “supplied”, the online student is left to gather supplies.
I like to experiment and learn new techniques and see where the art takes me. I do not always a want to repeat techniques and get frustrated spending money on something I am only going to use once.
Thanks for the opportunity to win the fabulous prize!

I think it would be cool to receive an outline of the course with simple directions to print out since I often end up taking notes of my own and would love to follow along and just jot down a few things myself.

  • Love this post with so many different types of fun things to view! I think a teacher who answers the questions in a timely manner and is available during the class in a forum is a great thing. Also, one who can provide alternative suggestions for materials – not just selling a particular brand of product – is a more helpful teacher.

  • Thanks for all the awesome links. I love it when an online teacher does an extra session on U-Stream with a live chat going on, while she is demoing a project. So great to be able to ask questions while something is being created. Hope this means you are in the process of creating another online course. Love taking classes from you! Thanks for the chance to win a slot in this course.

  • I just love the art prompt generator, but, I would like to see where you can generate more random prompts other than just 1, 5 or 10. Other than that, I think it’s great!

  • I am not sure exactly how A teacher might do this, but it makes my day when a teacher can help me see things from a new perspective.

  • Great post this today, can’t wait to check out all of it. I like when online classes are available for a longer period of time because sometimes I am too busy when they are doing the class. Also when the teacher goes a little bit beyond what you were expecting and gives a couple other ideas too makes it even more fun.
I love Junelle Jacobson’s classes as she is good at doing that.
I also love when a teacher actually checks her video to see that the bugs are all out rather than waiting until the class finds them and has to point them out.

  • I’d love for a teacher to not only show techniques, but to show finished projects using those techniques. I love to copy other Fabulous artists work and change it up to my style! LOVE your post today with all the inspirational goodies from these great artists! Thanks Julie! I am hooked on your stencils and have been inspired by your “messy” art!

It was sooooo informative and has greatly improved my use of stencils with my art journaling and scrapbooking. PDF’s are also a favorite! We appreciate all you and May do!

  • I feel a long-winded comment coming in response to todays fantastic resource post. Thank you Julie for the way you do things. I like when a teacher DOES what they teach, meaning that any day I pull up a post of yours it is about you DOING what you teach. That is an ongoing inspiration and reinforcement of the things you have taught me. I also like other teachers for different aspects of what they offer. Jessica Spragues classes are all accessible from one page and in case the forgetful me has lost track of what I have purchased, it is all in one place for me to retrieve. I also like the feeling that the teacher is an accessible personality. I have never been made to feel like a bother when emailing you or Noell Hyman or a couple others with remarks, suggestions or observations. I will stop now 🙂

Videos and asking questions that get a somewhat quick response is important. 🙂 Thanks for the chance to win!

  • Loved the blog posts today, so much to choose from. As for the what I think makes a great teacher, a great teacher is one who remembers what it was like to once be the student. I also love a teacher with a sense of humor, because laughter is good for the soul. I am a visual learner, so I do much better with being shown rather than just written or verbal directions. I’ve never taken an online class before, but I know for me it would have to have lots and lots of visuals. If it is a class not in real time, having 24/7 access to the class material so one can work at their own pace. (I am new to this medium so I am pokey) and a teacher that is easily accessible(not 24/7) would be extremely helpful.

Then you sideline into a cool tip or technique with the paints apart from the stencils. Love those little extra tidbits!

  • My two big things are forever access and bonus material. I don’t even mean extra videos or anything, just say, for example, you had a workshop on stencils and were using them with acrylic paints. Then you sideline into a cool tip or technique with the paints apart from the stencils. Love those little extra tidbits!

  • I love it when the teacher explains the theory or ideas behind the projects. That way I can take it and put my own spin on it in a way that works for me!

  • I love online classes, so convenient. My favorite teachers are the ones that make mistakes and show me how they fix them. The ones that show that art is not a perfect science. The videos show a complete project without being too cut up. And the ones that are fun and funny and sweet and make you feel like you are in their studio.

  • What a great video, so helpful. It teaches me to be less precious about my painting and be more relaxed about what I do. Both beautiful necklaces. Thanks for sharing it.

  • Art is such an individualistic, subjective thing. I know I put my heart and soul into mine. My favorite teachers are those that show their personalities and you can really see it in their art work. This, to me is inspiring. And ultimately, I want to be inspired. Not to copy their work, but to learn something that I can do differently in my own work. I think it is important to see the process that the teacher (artist) goes through and to also see the obsticles that can occur during that process. Keep it real! Forever access is always good too. 🙂

  • I love it when an instructor talks to ME. Answers a specific question or makes a comment on my project. Just that little bit of reaching out makes a HUGE impact on me. (ps. I’m super excited that you’re teaching at True Scrap this time. I’ve been hoping to take a class from you for AGES!)

  • I like when there are freebies – printables, and when the teacher provides feedback on projects….even well after the class itself is over.

  • Hi Julie! Great post as always! When I take an online class, the most important thing to me, above and beyond the class content, is feedback. I’ve taken many classes where the teacher’s comments are all positive – great shot! good job! Positive criticism – critical thinking does not have to be negative – with helpful suggestions on how to get better is something I really appreciate.

  • Oh my word. You linked to me. I was just on Pinterest and just about had a heart attack from glee. I found the image of my paint brushes on there and someone had typed “As seen on Balzer Designs.” How cool! Thanks! You made my day.
I still see your tutorial about those digi/hybrid leaves you made when you were on my team pinned from time to time, too. It feels like forever ago that you were on my CT. 🙂 I love following along with what you are doing now. YOU ARE AMAZING! I’m so happy for all your success.
