I recently watched the auto-tune remix from one of my favorite childhood TV shows, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood:
I had forgotten how much of the show was about using your imagination. I actually teared up a little watching this video. The lessons of kindness, courtesy, responsibility, and respect that Mr. Rogers espoused on his show, not to mention his encouragement to dream and imagine and play make believe, have stuck with me into adulthood.
A day or two after watching the video I was still hearing two phrases rattling through my head.
Two notions that I wholeheartedly agree with. I would say that at least 50% of my job and 85% of my creative time is based on these two ideas. Here are some examples:
It's good to be curious.
- I constantly ask myself, "What if…?" What if I combined these two colors? What if that was a house instead of an arm? What if I covered that part up?
- I like to think of myself as an explorer of art supplies. Sure, I'll read up on a product, but I like to see what I can do with it — how it works in my hand and in combination with my other supplies.
- I like to try new things. Be it techinques, products, art styles, or crafts, it's all interesting to me!
- When I see something I like I often think about how it was made or sometimes simply why I like it. Articulating why you like something can be a powerful tool to help you find your style and create projects you love.
You can grow ideas in the garden of your mind.
- As much as I love blog hopping and spending hours on Pinterest, I find that I'm actually much more productive when I stay away from the computer. It allows me time to grow my own ideas.
- I think the thing that is so unique about each of us is the way that our minds work. I try to embrace my own quirky oddness by running with every bad idea that comes rushing through my brain because I never know where I might end up!
- I am a daydreamer and a doodler and I have the sketchbooks to prove it! Many of those dreams and doodles make it into my finished artwork.
- I indulge in a lot of alone time. I need time by myself in order to sort out my feelings and my thoughts and grow new ideas for art.
How about you? Do these two phrases resonate for you?
I have never heard of Mister Rogers – seems to be a nice guy 🙂 I like your conclusions a lot! Very important to me are your thoughs on curiosity and the fact of staying away from the computer.

I have never heard of Mr Rogers either. But for some reason I teared up watching it. If only we could all remember to be curious and grow ideas.

I don’t garden outside but I completely understand why people love it because I relish my alone time gardening my ideas. To create something completely my own is a wonderful thing. Thanks for the reminder and confirmation! Mr Rogers is needed now more than ever. Maybe we should be buying his show on DVD for the children of this next generation. Can you imagine the next round of artists that would be nurtured? 🙂

I had such a crush on Mister Rogers when I was a young girl. I loved his world of make believe where anything was possible. I tend to stick to what I know in life and crafts but am trying to be a bit more adventurous. I don’t garden outside but I require lots of alone time to read and scrap (I am an only child and as such I think that I developed a way to entertain myself when I was younger).

I think so many of us who are totally described by this post are introverts. We aren’t shy; we do like people, but we have to be alone more than others to re-energize and make sense of all the input. I know so many who are uncomfortable in their own heads, and I feel sorry for them. My way isn’t the corporate way or the popular way, but it brings me so much contentment and joy. I am very grateful for my constant curiosity and for never out-growing a sense of wonder. Thanks, young friend, for your blog. For the instruction, the encouragement and for the invitation to think about these things.

Oh yes! I too watched Mister Rogers growing up….I really liked the video. I was worried at first that they might be making fun of him or putting him down but in the end i feel like they did a good job. Kids today need more TV like that. Nobody wants to admit that TV has any influence on the children that watch it but oh i beg to differ. But enough of that…..
My latest ‘What if….?’ was.. what would happen if i tried to paint a turkey feather??? Your right i do need time to daydream…….doodle…..and stepping back from the computer definitely helps….i think theres a fine line between the computer helping your imagination and hindering it…….and probably everybody’s ‘fine line’ is different……Hugs! deb

Curiosity and exploration are key to my whole life – which in turn feeds the part of life that is my art. Growing ideas is a great way to articulate how art occurs for me – thank you for this post.

Although I’m slightly older & Mr. Roger’s is my daughters era I believe that you are spot on with your assessment of his glorious ideas. Time to bring back the good sense of Mr. Roger’s, Winnie & TigerToo!

Loved this blog post, Miss Julie!
And so agree with you:
Mr Rogers was always on in our home, he presented a gentle yet
Intentional manner!
Alone time, although not always easy to get, is so important to allow
those creative ideas to emerge!
And Yes, being unplugged slows you down just enough to become
fully engaged in your own process!

A lovely man, and a wonderful show. So many lessons learned from his quiet, thoughtful ways. I had a short layover in Pittsburg, PA once, and there was a Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood exhibit in the airport. I loved that trip down Memory Lane, too. I wonder if he is part of the reason I am partial to wearing cardigans! 🙂

I grew up watching Mr. Rogers. Loved him! I can hear his theme song in my head right now. His quotes do resonate with me. It good to be curious. It helps to grow creatively.

Did you know that Mr. Rogers was actually an ordained minister in the presbyterian church?
True story.
Explains his gentleness, kindness & attitude of love & acceptance.

I also grew up w/Mr. Rogers! Before the advent of cable TV, Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street were the only shows geared specifically for children, and they were both wonderful teaching tools, not just in terms of academics but also in terms of encouraging kids to use their imaginations AND build character.
The rule at our house was that we had to go outside and play after these shows aired each day; today’s kids, unfortunately, sit indoors and watch so much more TV than we did, and as a teacher I can see that the level of imagination and social functioning today’s children have is not nearly where it was a generation ago.

I loved Mr. Rogers!
His quote that lives with me is “You have to do it, do it, do it”. i.e. You can’t just think about it in your head.

Great post, Julie. I especially liked your honesty about needing lots of alone time in order to live a creative life. Thanks for sharing.

“Explorer of art supplies” I love that 🙂
I have always thought of myself as a mad scientist with art supplies, kind of the same I suppose. I adored Mr. Rogers, used to watch him with my little brother, so I am guessing you guys are about the same age. Such sweet simple values in that show. Great post.

I loved reading all the comments. I watched Mr. Rogers with my kids and we loved him! Also loved the thoughts Julie listed. Yep, exploring my creativity has been a wonderfully healing experience for me, and I plan to continue as long as I live! I am also learning that it is ok to need alone time which I need chunks of.

Oh Mr.Rogers makes me happy and I love these quotes. How true. I agree with you about the computer. I really have to set limits for myself, as I find that more time on the computer leads to less time in the garden of my mind. It is a tricky thing… there is so much inspiration out there, but you really have to go within to find the good stuff!

Loved this tribute to Mr. Rogers – he was a good and decent man who had an amazing way of sharing so many moral truths. As for your questions, I too am a very curious person but have struggled to act more on it as an adult. I’ll read, watch videos about something but am usually too chicken to try it for myself. I’m working on changing that because there are so many things I want to try. And even though I enjoy blog hopping and find lots of inspiration on the web, I find that because there’s always so much new all the time, everywhere you turn, there’s no time to really explore what already is. It’s just too much and I have to just turn it off sometimes. I too need plenty of alone time to just recharge and process what I’ve taken in.

Great advice, I actually took notes! I struggle with being original. I am the best copier in the world, when it comes to art. So this is good advice to turn off the computer and tv and be quiet. Boy, that sounds scary to me!!!! But I bet I would be more original if I did. Ahh Hah moment!!! Thanks for this post. I needed it.

Thanks so much for sharing this video, I loved it! I grew up watching Mr. Rogers too. I so wish his show was still on for my children. It seems like everything they watch now is just crap.
It’s a shame that so many of us loose our curiosity as we grow older. There is still so much more to explore in this world! I actually wrote a blog post back in March on one reason why children can be more creative than us… because they are curious. It’s an essential part of creativity.
