You may recall that I recently asked Art Journal Every Day participants to share the story of why they art journal. Today, Christine Langemeyer is going to share her story!
Hi, I’m Christine Langemeyer. I’m Dutch but live in the Cotswolds in the UK.
I have been journaling for around five years. I started when I had a big flare up (I suffer with a condition called Fybromyalgia) I spent two months in bed and started drawing, pouring my emotions and feelings onto paper. I found a way to process all the things I pushed away for years, to accept that I had a chronic condition and I that I had to accept my limitations.
I am still journalling because it give me peace and it helps me cope with my condition. I journal everyday. On a good day I prepare lots of backgrounds in my pain/energy journal. I work every day with just fine liners or sharpies and write about my pain and energy, my sadness or frustrations (an idea taken from the mini course in Journal Girl’s blog).
I also have a positive-story-a-day journal. I use photo’s and scrapbook papers, stamps etc to write something positive. And on bad days I look at it and it helps me stay positive.
And finally I have a journal where I write and draw about day to day things – my girls, life etc
Journaling is very sympathetic to the pacing that helps me through the day as I can do it in little bits here and there.
I was bought up with craft. My mother was a weaver, spinner and knitter. I used to do spinning, knitting, textiles, felting, paper work, book making and silver smithing. I used to teach craft in a school before I got ill. But after my flare up I had to give most of it up. So my creative outlet is now in my journals and they give me peace and identity.
I use You Tube for all that I learned in the last few years as I can’t rally go out. I learned alot from other artists like yourself and follow all your blogs.
My must have supply –
- black fine liners, sharpies and white marker.
- water colour (Rembrandt)
- acrylic paint
- rubbers and lino cutters – I love making stamps
- good brushes and good paper.
My advice to people who wanted to start journalling – keep it simple. I started with an old diary and a few fine liners and slowly built up my techniques and supplies.

I’m a full time mother of three lovely teenage girls. My partner runs a community craft workshop with a good friend of mine. Due to my conditions I have to lay down and rest. My workshop is my bed. I paint, draw and do all my art from there. I’m blessed with a fantastic family and friends and the time and energy to be an artist.

Hi Christine, I was sick and in bed last year because of Pulmonary embolism. I would do my journaling in bed too! I had a lot of materials strewn around my bed and on a table near my bed. It made being sick more agreeable! Hope you feel better! Patsy from HeARTworks and papemelroti

I can certainly relate about the difficulty of having to accept the limitations pain and chronic conditions (I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis six years ago and it turned my entire world inside out!)
It can be so difficult to find the creative energy, but it is such a wonderful thing when you do.
