Book Club: More Fabric Art Collage by Rebekah Meier

BookClubHeader-sm

It's time for our July Book Club!  Just as a reminder, each month I choose a crafty book from my bookshelf and create something inspired by the book.   I hope you'll be inspired to do the same.

This month I chose More Fabric Art Collage by Rebekah Meier.

Bookcover
I also own the first book in this series, Fabric Art Collage.  And that book is the reason that Rebekah and I met.  Come with me on a trip down memory lane:

At one of my first CHA (Craft & Hobby Association) shows, I saw a woman in the ladies room with a fabulous bag.  I complimented her.  She thanked me and told me that it was a technique from her book.  I asked her for the title of her book.  She told me and I told her that I had just bought her book.  What a coincidence!  We introduced ourselves and she told me that she remembered seeing me on an episode of Quilting Arts TV.  What a small world!

Personal relationship aside, I chose Rebekah's book because it is packed with awesome information for art quilters, mixed media artists, and paper people alike.  Rebekah's first book had 40 techniques.  This one has a whopping 64.  I have to use the word "packed" again in order to describe this book because it is packed with colorful photos and examples.

Let's take a look at the table of contents:

  • Introduction
  • Tools & Supplies: Very comprehenisve at six pages long.  Gives you plenty of information about choosing the right tools and supplies.
  • Surface Design: Includes collagraph, stenciling, and thermofax screens.
  • Resists, Paints, and Washes: Includes monoprints, soy wax batik, and acrylic resists.
  • Fabrics and Foundations: Includes painted felt, paper towel fabric, and tea bag fabric.
  • Acrylic Texture Mediums: Includes gesso, fluid mediums, and gel mediums.
  • Stabilizers and Alternative Materials: Includes Lutrador, Timtex, Peltex, and fast2fuse.
  • Paper Techniques: Includes painted wallpaper, painted tissue paper, and Mul-Tex.
  • Embellishments: Includes clay buttons, reverse appliqué, and metal tape.
  • Display: In this chapter Rebekah makes suggestions for how to display your fabric art collages.
  • Scrap Magic: Examples of how to use scraps to create ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) and greeting cards.
  • Projects: Seven projects with step-by-step directions, which incorporate many of the techniques from the book.  Projects include a Mixed Media Tapestry and a Tag Book.
  • Gallery
  • Resources
  • About the Author

All of the artwork in the book is Rebekah's and she has a very distinct style.  I would call it geometric shabby chic.  Her color palette tends towards the very soft and pretty pastels.  Very romantic.  But of course, you can take any of the techniques and make them work with your own color palette and personal style.

Here's what I made (and the photos do not do the shiny metal justice):

I used Rebekah's method for embossing foil tape.

When I first looked through this book I was a bit overwhelmed.  It is so densely packed (there's that word again) with information that it actually feels a little intimidating.  Each page is full to the brim with instructions and images and examples.  My eyes keep darting across the overfull pages instead of focusing on the task at hand.  But now that I've worked on a project inspired by the book I can tell you that I'm looking forward to diving in again soon!

More Fabric Art Collage would be a great addition to any crafty library.  I think it's particularly useful to someone who is looking for an overview of many different techniques.  It's like a mixed media sampler.  You get a little taste of many different flavors.

As a special bonus, and thanks to the generosity of Doris Donnerstag, I have a copy of Rebekah's first book in this series, Fabric Art Collage up for grabs!

Fabricartcollage
Doris was kind enough to send me several art books and, as you know from my trip down memory lane, this is one that I already own.  So I'm delighted to send the new copy off to a happy home!

If you would like to win a copy of Fabric Art Collage, leave an answer to the following question in the comments section of this blog:

What is your favorite art/craft book and why?

I'll announce the winner this weekend (along with a brand new blog feature – yay!)

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. For easy reference all these "Book Club" posts are archived under the "Book Club" logo in the far right column of the blog.  You can also grab a "Book Club" button for your blog if you'd like!

  • I have so many craft books…oh how can you pick your favorite? It would be like picking a favorite child! So I will pick the one I purchased last week – Kristen Robinson – Tales of Adornment. It has inspiring images and easy to understand directions. This is my first visit to your blog, it popped up on the front page of typepad. It’s a really fun blog..I’ll be back to visit!

  • True Colors, edited by Lynne Perrella. Although I own many such books, this is the one that inspired me to get into art journaling, and the wonderful world of collaborative projects. Besides, in one book you get to see the work of many of the very bestixeefia artists out there.

  • Impossible to choose, but maybe art+quilt by Lyric Kinard. I don’t quilt very often but the design principles and creativity exercises work in any medium.

  • I am still pretty new to art journaling but have already managed to put together a pretty sizable stack of books about the subject. My first love will always be reading. I would say my favorite, at the moment, is Raw Art Journaling by Quinn McDonald. I like it because it talks about technique but also ways to creatively incorporate words into your art journaling. I had a fear of putting words on my pretty backgrounds but Quinn’s book changed that for me recently so for now it is my favorite.

  • I really love your embossed metal foil project! There are a lot of inspiring crafting books out there, so it’s hard to choose. But, being a rubber stamper, I’m very fond of Art Specially Stamping Techniques step by step. Thanks for the chance to win!

  • My favorite is The Usborne Book of ART Skills by Fiona Watt, because it is the first art book that I ever purchased. (it was intended for my grandchildren) The illustrations are clear and colorful…many techniques are described. I am fairly new to the mixed media craze, but it is such a wonderful pastime for a retired “color freak” from the 60s!

  • I’m sorry to say that I don’t have many art books but last mother’s day I asked for Kelly Rae-Roberts book ‘Taking Flight’ and was introduced to new materials and techniques through some easy-to-follow projects. One of these was the first time I used fabric in a project and I am hooked now: I know I’d get a lot from Rebekah’s book. I’m already in love with the cover projects!

  • My favorite book is definitely artists journals and sketchbooks by Lynne perrella. . Why? Because this is one of the first books I ever bought, it is stacked with loads of ideas, and she is the queen of mixed media. I bought this book way before I even thought about art journalling. I just loved the colour and all the amazing ideas inside this treasure trove of a book.

  • Wow! This is a beautiful book. I think it would be so much fun! It is hard to choose a favorite of my collection. I guess today it would have to be “Cards That Pop-up, Flip, and Slide” by Michael Jacobs. I would love to create interactive scrapbook pages and cards. Thanks for the chance to win!

Before that it was Artist’s Journal Workshop by Cathy Johnson and I really like the Art Journal Workshop by Traci Bunkers too. Another big influence has been Taking Flight by Kelly Rae Roberts. I am sure when your book comes out it will be my current fave!

  • Down that road. I love paper crafting and am just poking my toe into word of art journaling and collage. I started off with paper quilts by Sandra Lounsbury Foose and became enthralled with pattern, and repetition of colors and shapes. Now my favorite book is Paper Quilting by Bridget Hoff. I guess you can see where my toe is leading me– “foot first” into collage, adding seeds, leaves, hand stitching. Can painted panels, templates, fabric, and melted wax be far behind? I would love to win Fabric Art Collage to get my footsies going! And I plan to check back to see all the other wonderful titles all these talented folks are raving about.

  • Thanks, Julie, for the great post, the chance to win, and always inspiring your readers! One of the first books I purchased when I started exploring mixed media was “Journal Spilling,” by Diana Trout. It has great prompts, step by step tutorials, and really made me feel free to experiment and “spill” my art and words. I still open it up and refer to it and often have “aha” moments as I am reminded of techniques I forgot about.

  • My favorite is by Nita Leland, The New Creative Artist. She offers so many practical answers as well as inspiration. But I am wondering if anyone besides me has a problem with focus? I have so many different projects going right now, I don’t know which one to work on next! I am making journals, art quilts, collaged paintings and creating some of my own fabrics… does this happen to you? (I already have my Kindle copy of Fabric Art Collage, and would love to get a copy of the new one.)

  • My favorite is an online read called balzerdesigns.typepad.com! I have said this before, Julie–you woke me up, you CHANGED me! I would not be living my truth if it weren’t for you. (Corny? Yes; true? Yes!) A book in my personal library that I also adore is “Doodle Stitching” by Aimee Ray. The photos and instructions for all the different embroidery stitches are great, easy to follow. Her whimsical designs and projects have inspired several fun creations as I work to add embroidery to my technique repertoire.

There are so many different artists in the book that you can really envision a lot of different styles. There is also great content and a lot of prompts to get you started.

  • I have always been creative …in the past mostly with sewing and then paper mache. Six years ago I became the primary care giver for my Mother-in-law who had dementia. I would have to spend hours just setting on the couch where she could see me as she watched TV. If she couldn’t see me the anxiety and fears would take control of her. At first I read A LOT and then I started drawing. I had never tried mixed media until I took a online class with Katie Kendrick.By this time my MIL had passed but I was hooked on art. I bought the book “Layered Impressions” by Katie too and I am constantly referring to it… and the DVD from the class. A whole new world has opened to me :0)

  • really like the journal cover you did. the various patterns of embossing really mesh. not usually a fan of dark, subtle colors but this combo rocks.
i already have the book and just won new stencils a while back, so not commenting to be in the running to win. i have so many art books i am running out of space. couldn’t possible pick a favorite because haven’t had time to read even half of them. have started putting one unread book by my purse to take along to appointments. better than reading 10 year old magazines.

I love how you showcase so many different books and techniques all of the time on your blog.
My favorite book is Water,Paper,Paint by Heather Smith Jones showing different watercolor techniques to get one started. I like some of the more abstract examples.

  • My book most used is Creative Collage Techniques by Nita Leland and Virginia Williams. Why? It’s one of the first art books I bought, and I find myself referring to it often, in the card and collage work I do. It has ideas for making pretty papers for backgrounds, which I often do.

  • My favorite book is Art at the Speed of Life by Pam Carriker. Often I get one of these books I think is going to be great and it is not. This book is really one of the very few I WOULD recommend. Pam Carriker has assembled great projects and great instructors (including her own work). Every time I pick it up I find something else new I want to try.

  • I think some of my favorite craft books are the ones by Maggie Grey and Isobel Hall. Although they have a little more focus on textiles, they bring together materials I would have never thought of. Paper Metal Stitch by Maggie Grey was one of the first books that inspired me to think of mixed media as beyond just collaging images on a page with a focal image. And Isobel Hall has an amazing book on Embroidered Books–if you are interested in handmade books, check this out!!

  • This book is just what I need, so excited to see this. My mom just gave me some fabric scraps and I’ve been playing with them nonstop, so much fun. I bet this would really show me more of what I could do.
Love your foil art, so cool!!
I don’t buy books really, but I do READ ALL THE TIME. Whatever I can get my hands on at the library. So I don’t have a fave book but I do read the Creating Keepsakes magazine and Betterhomes and Gardens the most and all the colors in both inspire me!!
Thanks for this chance Julie, love this book idea each month.

Most everything I have learned has come from the internet and blogs like these, which are great. However, I think i need to add to my library, as much as I love books! And these are beautiful and either one would be a joy to own. Definitely bookmarking this page and thanks for sharing!

  • I only have a couple of books, but so far my favorite is one on doodling — it is so much fun to play around. Most everything I have learned has come from the internet and blogs like these, which are great. However, I think i need to add to my library, as much as I love books! And these are beautiful and either one would be a joy to own. Definitely bookmarking this page and thanks for sharing!

  • My favorite is Taking Flight, Inspiration and techniques to give your creative spirit wings by Kelly Rae Roberts. This book not only is loaded with great art and techniques by Kelly Rae and many others but also very inspiring to any artist. Especially to one like myself just getting started showing and selling my art.

  • I don’t really have a favourite book. Back in my scrapbooking days I had a few. Elsie Flannigans book – 52 Scrapbooking Challenges is good for sparking ideas and getting my imagination flowing. Being more into mixed media, doodling and lettering of late – I have not bought any books but I do have a subscription to Cloth, Paper, Scissors magazine and there are many wonderful blogs available now. Thanks Julie for all the ideas you share for free.

  • I don’t have a craft book but hope to correct this problem soon. These comments have inspired me but where oh where to begin?
I have depended on magazines and the Internet for my inspiration.

  • Favorites vary with what I am working on/obsessed with which at the moment are mini albums. So I am reading my tutorials from Kathy Orta and studying the pictures, my Stampin’ Up catalog for embellishments and Layers by Rhonda Palizzari (which I won from your blog) to help with paper placement.
I love your project! I have been meaning to try metal tape and I really should add some sewing and fabric to these mini albums. Thanks for getting my brain working – if only I was home and not at work -:)

  • I’m loving “The Art of Layers” by Ronda Palazzari! And not only the book for the techniques but love her blog about mixed media. Fabulous, love her style. The other gal I’d love to see a book from is Anna Dobrowska….just took a mixed media class from her and love the vintage/layered look with a bit of grunge tossed in (see her on Prima/Sissix). Thank you so much for your inspiration with stencils, colors and boldness of design and creativity!

  • I have many, many art books but True Colors is my go to book. It really inspired me to return to art, and I turn to it frequently! Also, Raw Art Journaling/Quinn McDonald. This book really clicked with me, with its short and sweet techniques.

  • I would love to win Fabric Art Collage. I have various different kinds of art/craft books. I love them all depending on what media I am currently working in. If I had to choose favorites it would be my Seasonal books. Each year I can’t wait until the new Gooseberry Patch books come out. They get me in the mood for Christmas creating and cooking.

I love both books that I have, Tim H’s Compendium I and a mostly fabric collage book which I can’t tell you the name of or the artist/author (she’s in the UK) because I don’t have it with me right now. I’m not even a fabric artist but it is so inspiring and I look through it with paper in mind. She uses materials in a very loose way that comes together so beautifully and her materials are so unique!
