If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, all the posts can be found here. Please read this post first. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks!
Today I thought I'd share a few more of my recent pages.
I go through phases where I love my pages and phases where I hate them. This is not a group of pages that I think is particularly pretty. But they're full of my memories and lots of artistic experimentation! So for those two reasons alone, I'm proud to call them mine.
I tend to gravitate towards faces in my journal, so it's nice to see a page that just has doodles. This page is the result of many layers of paint. Originally, it looked like this:
(The photo is just a small section of the page I instagrammed along the way.) I put gesso over the top to allow me to write on it.
Here's a closer peek at the big doodle on the right:
I do almost all my doodling with a small paintbrush and Golden Fluid Acrylics. A great combination!
Do you remember the spread below?
I showed you how to put this background together in a video from the Peek-a-Boo Stencil Hop.
Here is the page it became:
I apologize for the toes in the photo. It was super windy when I photographed this spread and it was the only way to keep the pages from flapping. The stamped sheet that I'm holding down with my toes is actually a thin piece of paper that I taped in the middle of the spread. Here's the other half of the page:
(And my toes, again!) It was such a pretty piece of paper I decided that I had to add it into my journal. I simply adhered it in with the black and white washi tape you see.
I think this page is embarrassingly ugly. Correction: I think that face is disgustingly and embarrasingly ugly. But I like the strip of green patterned paper (a leftover from this project). And I like the red stamped lines (that's a hand carved stamp) and I like the doily illusion.
This may look like a doily, but it's not a doily. I grabbed a paper doily and some black stencil paint and used the doily as a stencil. Pretty super cool looking, huh?
I don't often use magazine images in my journal, but when I came across this face in The New Yorker, I just had to tear it out!
"To Do" lists are something that often end up in my journal. I like that. It encourages the feeling that my art journal is a practical tool and not a finished work of art. Really takes the pressure off.
This next spread is actually the final spread in this particular art journal. I'm currently working in the art journal I made for June's Book Club (and shared in this post as well).
I was inspired by Carol Mahy-Merveille or Lechatquitousse's beautiful tutorial. I'm not sure if the spread is done or not, but I knew that I didn't want to journal on top of it, so I simply decided to move on!
So now I'm working in a new journal and we'll see where the dailies take me!
Here's the linky list for this week:
Thanks for stopping by!

Hi! Thanks for being a daily dose of both inspiration and humor. These pages are great – I love the taped in page…something I’ll have to try. I’ve been following your blog and journaling daily, but this is the first time I’ve added a link. Thanks for making the art so fun & approachable!
Have a great weekend!

how do you do all this? It’s beautiful! I have a question though – do you have a work studio where you have all your artsy stuff to utilize at a moment’s notice or how do you do it? I have things put away – because I have SO many things…it makes it hard to start unless I pull everything out, do a whole bunch at once, then put everything away again…how do you do it?

Thank you for sharing your process of creating art. I enjoy your posts every day. Sometimes I struggle to understand your idea of “ugly” in pages and papers, etc. Perhaps you could elaborate? You have mentioned that you keep on hand craft books; one you might enjoy when you have more time is “Mixed Media Girls with Suzi Blu.”

Hey Julie: You know the page you said was embarrassingly ugly…it was one of my favs, tied with the first and the orange/yellow one. Why? It seemed to me to tell the story of life: Suffering/Love being 2 sides of a coin, Love/Hate being 2 sides of relationship, Light/Dark being 2 sides of our Universe. To me it is the juxtaposition or the yin yang spoken through art, through your face art. I loved it as soon as I saw it before I read what you had written. It spoke to me about embracing our shadow self and true RADICAL ACCEPTANCE of not only our wonderful traits but also our shadow traits…and love it all! Just one artist’s view… xox

What is wrong with the face that makes it so embarrassingly ugly? I actually like the face.

I thought the face had a look of resigned tragedy and looked strong in adversity. I really liked it. Not ugly but interesting and mysterious. Who wants cute and pretty all the time anyway (not me). Cute toenail polish btw!

Hi Julie,
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your art journal! I like how you play with paint and the amount of text you compose to tell your stories.
Please tell me where I can buy those large number rubber stamps — the ones you use to stamp the dates on your journal entries.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful, happy blog!
