Is it okay for me to admit that I'm a bit stressed out?

Stressed-wm
I have a book deadline colliding with CHA colliding with heading to New Jersey to teach at CREATE colliding with a magazine deadline and I am running to keep up.  And I'm not a very good runner.  Basically I'm caught in a nasty circle where I'm just hating everything I'm making and that makes me feel bad about myself and then that makes me get angry at myself for feeling bad and then that…well, you get the gist of it.

I'm trying to keep up with my blog and my e-mail and the apartment and well, there are a lot of unanswered e-mails and my studio has gone way past hurricane phase to something I like to call armageddon.  Luckily my husband is out of town, so all those dirty dishes in the sink will just be our little secret, okay?

As for the blog, you may see a few posts from the archives pop up in the next week or two.  They're oldies, but goodies.  I promise.

Nonetheless I realize how super incredibly totally lucky I am that all these wonderful opportunities are the stressors in my life!

Happyface-wm
I managed to catch the Fourth of July fireworks from our terrace last night and they were pretty spectacular!  Here are a few of my favorite photos:

Fireworks1
Fireworks1
Fireworks1
As beautiful as these photos are, I have to admit that I love this photo the most:

Fireworks-bokeh
It's a complete accident.  I somehow managed to get a bokeh effect when I was trying to photograph the fireworks.  And looking at this series of photos, I had a mini ephiphany about my own little stress out meltdown.

I took 157 photos.

Only 20 of those photos were mostly in focus.

Maybe 6 of them were truly in focus.

And among the 151 rejects was this gorgeous mistake: the bokeh photograph.

A very good reminder.

I need to let go of my expectations.  Not lower them, but let go entirely.  I need to approach all of this creating and writing with the same freedom I have when I point my camera at some fireworks and hope for the best.  Some things will work and some won't.

After all, isn't this the philosophy that I teach in my classes?  That I preach in my videos?  That I believe with all of my heart?  Sometimes it's just so hard to let go.  Especially when you really care about the outcome.  But art isn't something that can be forced.

Today my mantra is: Let Go.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • And take a few minutes now & then just to breathe. And don’t forget to sleep! Otherwise, the more stressed & tired you get, the more will go wrong. ((Hugs)) & your fireworks photos are great, especially the ‘mistake’.

  • Totally rooting for you Julie, you can do it!
Blog schmog, good things come to those who wait. No sad faces please 😉
If you hit a wall, maybe try taking another field trip to a museum or just schedule an hour to throw a bunch of clutter into a box or three? That kind of stuff always helps me find my spark again.
Best wishes to you on meeting your deadlines. Totally cheering for you!

  • It’s OK to say you are stressed!! Wow you have a lot on. It’s ok to adimit and say it, sometimes it makes dealing with all you have going on that little bit easier. remember to take a break, walk away from everytng, and just do something completely different – listen or watch the birds, watch people walking by, watch the clouds in the sky, whatev works…sometimes that small time out can refresh you and help release all the tension you carry iIn your body – that we don’t always realize we do! Hand in there, and thanks for sharing. 🙂

  • Julie,
You are such a motivated person and you want to do your
best at all that you set-up for yourself, but you are absolutely right about not being able to force the art. Eat a healthy salad or a piece of fruit.
I just found a wonderful meditation music recording on youtube…it really relaxes your mind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_a-Yh5FTaE&feature=related. I have been using this for 4 days and it has helped so much. It might make you sleepy so it is good to listen to before bed.
I look forward to seeing what fabulous designs you will make for all of these upcoming deadlines.
    Good luck

  • Julie, I wonder how you do it all. Don’t worry about the blog – we’ll love the old posts we’ve not read in awhile. Take care of yourself. Lots of good advice from your readers. Above all, be good to yourself. Get a massage or go for a walk or just be with a cup of joe or tea. And be sure you get those 8 hours of shut eye and spend some time with the handsome hubby and sweet momma. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way.

  • Once again the honesty in your blog is refreshing and inspiring! Everyone has been there when work, family, sanity, and the universe collide at once. You are so right about the photos- I take a zillion (actually counted by my kids on vacation one year) but only keep 1% of them. And, as with your bokeh photo, I always find a few I never expected to be great but they become my favorites. Kind of like my art journal – when I just let go it turns out great but if I force it, well, even my family can’t muster up the strength to say it looks good. You know it’s bad when the hubby says it is ugly…

  • I had to stop in and say I admire you incredible work ethic- I only post 2 to 3 times a week and I find it difficult- I can’t imagine the pressure you must be feeling right now but I know you’ll pull through with immense style and flair. I know how it is to get into a “I hate everything I make” rut- I use your blog to get out of mine! HUGS to you- never doubt your work or the process you’ve created- your work is consistently beautiful and these pressures will provide great new ideas.

  • So true, I have a hard time not controlling the outcome of my art and find that when I “let go” it doesn’t always turn out better but it’s more of me and there are a lot of happy coincidences. Anyway, thanks for the post, reminding me to make art and accept the outcome.

  • Oh- I hate to say it, but it’s comforting to know that even the greatest among us has those days when they hate everything they create- too many won’t admit it. It’s temporary tho-as it always is. The next thing you make may be your favorite! I always find that when I am feeling negative, my art reflects it-which is frustrating because that is just when I want to create the most!
Hang in there-this too shall pass 🙂

  • Julie, you are refreshingly authentic and that’s one of the reasons I read your blog every day. I would love to see old posts; they’ve all been winners and I can always use reminders about techniques and such, and I know that means you’ll be taking care of yourself during a particularly hectic time. Its good for all of us to see that a professional artist has the same problems with time commitments, self confidence, and guilt that the rest of us do. Thanks for the honest sharing!

  • Thinking about you Julie and sending loads of happy your way.
I personally consider your old posts to be hidden gems I may have forgot so please post them. Maybe it’ll add a teeny but of slack into your schedule.
My advice is to make sure you’re eating every few hours and that it’s good, nourishing food and sleep – at least a little – if you can.
    Take care.

  • Sweet Julie, I am a pretty new follower so let me say, first, that your “reruns” will all be new to me, so bring them on and take a couple of breaths! I have been on Design Teams and I also create custom wedding scrapbooks for a living, and the pressure to create on command is something that I know well! I have been working with a “bridezilla” recently, and I had convinced myself that she was going to be unhappy with my creativity! If you and I keep this up, we can share a room in the loony bin! Shall we both take your advice and just “let it go”? I am thinking yes! Thanks for this empowering post!

Love it!! One step at a time, and take a break now and then–creativity and art are like quicksilver: concentrate too hard, and it wriggles away from your grasp…let it flow by just being ‘YOU’, and you’ll get there, Julie!!

  • Hi Julie, glad you took time out to take in the fireworks (love the bokeh pix! I have a lot of “mistake” photos I never delete). I love that “Let go mantra”; Sometimes a piece I’m working on goes all wrong but one little change and it becomes my favorite. I often find I discover a lot of goodness when I remember to go with the flow. Hope you’re finding a good balance! And I’d be more than happy to read your old posts! Thank you for sharing your fantastic work!

  • First off, sending you hugs and wishes for more happy faces!!
I’m sure you are overwhelmed with all these deadlines coming up. Don’t worry about the blog, you are so awesome to blog daily, you need a BREAK for sure. I think you should take blog breaks more often, not sure how you keep up so well on it and still have time for all that art/fun time.
Go do what needs to be done and try to enjoy the process of it all. I know you can do it and everything will be better soon.
Thanks for all you do for us and inspire us with, we are so lucky to know you!!
Take care of yourself, lots of sleep, walks and good food will help. GOOD LUCK ON IT ALL!!

  • I can understand how you feel… deadlines and things to do are overwhelming and they can take away the enthusiasm and you feel drained! I suggest you to rest and sleep and take some days off 🙂 I’m glad to see old posts because maybe I missed some articles in the past and now I have the opportunity to read them.

  • Take care of yourself first, Julie! I love your posts – they are such a nice, bright spot of color in my in-box! Reruns are just fine. You’ve got so much on your plate now so don’t worry about us. Love the fireworks photos. Have never been to NYC so it was a nice glimpse of it for me. Letting go is hard but it’s something we all need to do, I think. I know it is a VERY hard thing to do. So try to do it and be extra kind to yourself, okay?

Thank you for sharing your low moment with us. It is actually very encouraging to know that I am not the only one who feels overwhelmed with projects, ideas, and dirty dishes.
Hang in there. You don’t have to be so damn amazing all the time!

  • Lessons we all need drummed into us. As I look around at the carnage and wish I could still ignore the dishes, alas I think it is time to put the paint brush down and bring some order back…just a little.
I always find these phases where I hate what I do very cyclical. But while I am in that phase I do wonder if I am all used up already.
How exciting and frustrating and stressful. All at the same time. Thank you for sharing and go you!
