This was my first visit to my Dad's house on Cape Cod.
It's a lovely house perched right on the edge of the sea.
And it is filled with lots of wonderful artistic inspiration. It was built by a trio of brothers who lived there and added a number of artistic touches along the way. My Dad and his wife have also added a lot of artistic touches and so the place is chock-a-block full of eye candy.
Some of the touches that the three brothers left include wonderful wood carvings they did.
I love the blue staircase with the snake banister and wonderful wood carvings.
The house is covered in weathered wood, inside and out.
I love the live edge of this little wooden display shelf. And the collection of rocks and shells are a perfect way of bringing the outside in. (I have to admit that I took a collection of rocks and shells home from the beach and am hoping to do something crafty and fun with them!)
This was another display idea that I loved:
Large beach hats can be hard to store, so why not put a pretty one out on a shelf as a display object? I think it's a great idea and adds to the beachy feeling of the whole place.
Even the most mundane of spaces, like the spice rack, can be "spiced" up with an artful addition like this pretty bit of pottery:
The particular container above is from a pottery studio that my Dad took us to see. I wanted to buy some, but transporting pottery back to NYC just seemed too difficult. The place is called Jobi Pottery and it looks like you can buy it online and they'll ship it to you. I'm digging their black and white pieces:
One of the things that I really liked about the house was the way the white furniture acted as a blank canvas for colorful accessories.
The blue pillows and the brightly colored art stand out while the couch is a simple backdrop.
Again, the cute little fish table really stands out.
Rugs are also a great accessory which add color and design to a room.
I'm a big fan of whimsical and fun designs. So I loved this drinking glass chandelier (that's my Dad in the photo):
My Dad told me that they tried switching out some of the clear glasses for colored ones for a totally different look. It's definitely a conversation starter at a dinner party!
Finally, the outside of the house has a real "Secret Garden" appeal.
Even the outside paths have an artistic flair.
I hope you enjoyed this little house tour. I came away from my Dad's house feeling very inspired. My husband and I often talk about what our house will be like when we "grow up" (we're both in our mid-thirties) and buy a house. Renting an apartment in Manhattan doesn't always lend itself to artful living.

Nice! Those wood carvings remind me a lot of totem poles! The weathered wood is so nice to look at, and it fits the entire look of the house. I’d like to live in that kind of beach house someday. =)
