I'm participating in a very special weekend blog hop to celebrate Daniella Woolf's new book, The Encaustic Studio.
You may recall that I mentioned it looked good in this post. Well, Jaime from Interweave Press saw that post and offered to send me a digital copy of the book and offered up a hard copy (which includes a DVD) for me to give away to one lucky reader! (Details on the giveaway at the end of this post.)
I have to admit that I am equal parts intrigued and repelled by encaustic. Intrigued because it's just so darn cool. Seriously, whenever I see encaustic paintings the depth and texture just draws me in immediately. On the other hand, it can require a lot of equipment, space, ventilation, and it takes some time to get good at it. In her book Daniella says, "A smooth surface is one of the hallmarks of encaustic, and one of its sterling qualities. It takes some practice; it took me two years to figure out how to achieve the smooth results I wanted." Well, that explains why my dabbling didn't get immediate stellar results, doesn't it?
In all seriousness though, I find encaustic enormously intimidating. I worry about fumes. I don't understand the supplies. What's the difference between encaustic gesso and regular gesso? What tools do I need? How do I get the results I want? With these questions and concerns swirling in my head I started to read The Encaustic Studio and I was pleasantly surprised to discover thorough answers and instructions at every turn.
While I haven't actually done any of the projects or tried any of the techniques from the book, I still found this book very encouraging. Daniella definitely made me feel like I could do this encaustic thing. And she got me excited about the possibilities. She is clearly an enormous wax fan and the book basically shows you how to use any of your favorite art supplies (from Pan Pastels to colored pencils to stencils to knitting) with encaustic. And I love the chapter on image transfers!
The best thing I can say about this book is that Daniella makes me want to try encaustic. Her enthusiasm is contagious and her expertise is comforting. I like a little hand holding from my book author. If you're interested in encaustic, this book looks to me like it's filled with great information and inspiration. And if you're not interested in encaustic…well, you might be after you read this book!
The way this blog hop works is a little non-traditional. Blog posts will be appearing throughout the weekend, so you may need to check back if the bloggers don't have their Encaustic Studio post up yet.
- Cloth Paper Scissors Today: This is the blog of Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine. In case you didn't know, I write a column for Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine called "Adventures in Arting." (And they just renewed my contract for next year – yay!)
- Daniella Woolf: Daniella is the über talented book author.
- Bianca Mandity: You'll remember Bianca from the previous round of stencil hops. She rocked out the Balzer Designs "Triangle" stencil here and the "Clouds" & "Rain" stencils here.
- Bridgette Guerzon Mills: I just visited Bridgette's blog for the first time and it's filled with gorgeous encaustic art!
- Dea Fischer: Dea is a bookbinding expert. I had the privilege of taking a class from her at CREATE last year!
- Jane Davies: Jane is a wonderful collage artist. I recently signed up to spend five days in Vermont taking her Collage Journeys class in Vermont. Can't wait!
- Jodi Ohl: I just took a spin through Jodi's blog and she makes lots of cool colorful art and teaches a ton of classes (both online and in person).
- Julie Fei-Fan Balzer (you are here)
- Lynette Haggard: I just visited Lynette's blog and she's featuring a series of in-depth interviews with a variety of artists. Very interesting to see their work and their studios and read their thoughts on creating.
- Suze Weinberg: Suze is a wonderful artist and fellow East Coaster. She is the inventor of many wonderful products including the Ranger Melting Pot.
If you'd like to win a copy of The Encaustic Studio, please leave an answer to the following question in the comments section of this blog:
What makes you buy a book? Topic? Author? Recommendation? Amazon Reviews? Book Store Flip Through?
If you don't know how to leave a comment, click here. I will announce the winner on Tuesday.
Thanks for stopping by! Now, go and hop around!

I use various forms of all those questions when deciding to buy a book. I prefer a quick look thru, but I live in a very rural area so that is generally not an option. So recommendations, know about the author and reviews are what I rely on. I’d love to win this bok.

I books for various reasons. It may be to support a friend who has published his/her first book; to learn a new technique, and to use for future reference as I craft.
I find that I am drawn to artists that are just starting out. It is good to read about their journey. I would love to win this book, it would introduce me to a new medium.

It could be any number of reasons that I buy a book. It could be simply the topic intrigues me. It could be authored by someone I already follow in some way and would love to know more. I may flip through the book at a store and fall in love and need it.
Most of them have such drool-worthy pics and inspiring info that just about anything would make me check my wallet! :o)

Hi: Nice give-away! I have taken one class on using encaustic waxes. It was enjoyable but I’ve not done another, even though I have many of the supplies “just waiting”. When I purchase a new book on Art I am usually looking for information/instructions on a particular subject. I’ll flip through pages via Amazon or in a book store . . . seeing the inside pages is what makes my final decision. I wish all authors would show a few photos of what’s inside their book on Amazon — I think it only helps sell their book!

Cool giveaway! One way i buy books is reading the author’s blog to see if their style matches mine or I’d like to learn more about theirs. I also love to physically handle and look through art books and sometimes (scratch that, often) impulse purchase and yes, I do love to read reviews and get suggestions from others. So that’s a wrap. Thank you for your cool art and sharing it.

For art books, usually a flip-thru, either in the book store or at the library. I rarely buy from reviews, topic or author alone cause I mostly want to make sure there are projects or techniques that I really want to do/learn.
For fiction, I buy from all that you mentioned.
I totally have the hots to try encaustic and would put this book to good use if I’m lucky enough to win it. Otherwise I might have to go and actually buy it!

In general, I purchase a book based on a topic and a flip-thru. I have been DYING to try encaustics, but am intimidated by everything you wrote in your post! I have been trying to find someone in the Chicagoland area who teaches this, but no luck. I have had this book sitting in my Amazon cart for a long time. Maybe I’ll get lucky this time!!!

I usually buy a book because I am interested in learning more about the topic of the book. I read Amazon reviews but they don’t affect my decision to purchase or not. Lots of times with Amazon there feature to look inside the book is the final item to sway me one way or another to purchase a particular book

This book looks amazing — I’ve wanted to try encaustic techniques and this just may be the starting point. What makes me buy a book is different depending on the type of book (instructional vs leisure reading) but I do read reviews and they have a lot of sway. Would love to win – thanks for the chance.

I feel the same way that you do about encaustic. I tried a few times and loved it, because of all the imperfections, the smell of the wax, the texture… But having to get a well ventilated space and more material is what makes me nervous to take it more advancely in my artwork.
I love love LOVE book. What makes me buy one ? Not necessarily the author, because knowing an artist does not mean his/her book will interest me; the topic for sure, then if it is well explained, with great pictures because I am visual and need both words and images to get something fully. The price too, art books are pretty expensive in Canada (we pay a few more dollars more than you in the US… I try to understand how come it’s like this).

I’ve been itching to try encaustic for years and have some of the supplies buried in my closet waiting for the right moment. I have a few of the books, but would rather wait for a class to be offered in NYC and begin that way first. There’s a level of discussion I need with other people in the room when I start something new and this is a great one.

I have all the basic stuff to start on encaustic but I just can’t get myself to pull everything out and commit a block of time to experimenting with it. Same with plaster (I bought ‘Plaster Studio’ for that reason).
I buy art books for inspiration, because I’ve seen work by the author, and because it’s written on a subject I want to learn more about.
Thanks for the great review!

I buy a book because I have heard about it or saw it at a bookstore on a blog. If there is a technique I would like to try, I look for books with the info online, prior to purchase.

I buy by topic first and author second….I do like to flip through, I like to have some idea of actual content! I’ve take a few encaustic classes and could learn so much from this book. I’m sure I NEED it!

The topic and the author are my two first criteria before purchasing an art book. I like to look through them at a bookstore first, but if that is not possible, I appreciate the previews of parts of the book that are often available online. While I do read reviews on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, they aren’t what sways me since you never really know the background of experiences the reviewer brings to the review.

I like to look through them at a bookstore first, but if that is not possible, I appreciate the previews of parts of the book that are often available online. While I do read reviews on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, they aren’t what sways me since you never really know the background of experiences the reviewer brings to the review.
I buy a book based on flip-throughs, reviews from Amazon, the front cover and the description. This book looks awesome! I would love to win a copy!

I used to buy lots of books – just wanted a book on every technique known!! Now it takes me a while – usually several artists whose work I love will write about a particular book and eventually I might get it – I love books but when the choice is art supplies or books – well, the supplies usually win.

I search Amazon by topic. Then I use the reviews to narrow the results. When I look at the reviews, I check how many people have reviewed the book. If it has 5 stars and only one review, it does not mean as much as 4 stars with 20 reviews. Then I check the check the inside tab to see if the narrative is clear.

Never tried encaustic and I am intrigued!
When I buy a book, there are a number of factors that prompt me to do so. The author, the subject, the cover. If I can flip through it, that can make my decision for me. Recommendations from friends, favourite bloggers also influence me.

I am fascinated by Encaustic and wanting to read this book. Some of the factors that make me buy a book are my interest in the topic and if it is a book I think I will read again and again. I love being able to flip through a book – whether it is online or in the store doesn’t matter just as long as I feel I get a good look through. I am usually looking for well written information (with no obvious grammar/spelling errors! Those drive me crazy), great photographs and fascinating and new to me information.

I just got my copy in the mail today along with three other equally great publications, I can’t wait to dive in and learn more about this medium.

First of all the topic has to interest me. I love looking through a book first before buying if I get the chance. Otherwise I read reviews on Amazon or search for one on the Internet. The author doesn’t matter to me although a name I recognize would also draw me to check out a book.
Thanks for the chance to win this book. I’m fascinated by encaustics although some of the safety factors worry me a little.

I appreciate thoughtful book reviews from artists I admire (like this one), because I have so many books now that I hesitate to buy new ones unless I can be assured that they have something new to offer.

Definitely book store flip-through. The best book I have purchased recently was Personal Geographies by Jill K Berry and I bought it because it was so visually appealing and stimulating. I have not tried true encaustic although I recently did use melted beeswax just to feel the texture and the melting/application process. Thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the smell.

I mostly buy by topic. But sometimes it is by recommendations and/or a review. I like to buy books by artists I follow regularly on the internet, because I love their art and also to support them. I have been intrigued by encaustic for a long time but never dared launch into it.

I like to have a book in my hand and page through it to see the contents. I ask myself things like…does it peak my interest? is it easy to understand? are the illustrations well labeled? will it keep my attention? does the artist/author communicate well? how expensive and extensive is the supply list? will I go home and actually try the technique? That is what I do with books. I really like to SEE what I am buying. I will say that I have bought a few downloadable videos from CPS because of their previews. Encaustic art is something I have been curious about for awhile. Thanks Julie.

Being a *hands-on* type of person, I do love to see a book in person checking to see how many pages, picture quality, amount of helpful pictures, writing skill that conveys the ideas and originality.
The next best thing to looking at a book in person is the Amazon site (publishers too). I appreciate the fact that technology lets me look at some of the book. I can usually get a good feel of the techniques, pictures and writing.
Artist’s web-sites let me know when a book is out and the recommendations make me seek out the book in person or on-line.
I love your regular commitment to reviewing art/craft books, Julie, as I think that you do a thorough job of keeping your readers informed.
Thank you

Nowadays, because I am running out of room, I take more time to look a book over to see if I can/will/want to use the techniques it talks about.. What makes me buy it are clear instructions, photographs of the technique as it progresses, photos of the results, and tips and tricks to help one along. This encustic book looks like a keeper to me!

Topic for sure and it has to be all about something I haven’t tried. I love trying new things . . . experimenting . . . taking it farther. I have dabbled with encaustics and love them. I won’t pay for a book unless it looks really good and this sounds oh so awesome! Thanks for the opportunity. Warmest wishes

I’ve so been wanting to learn encaustic! It was actually one of my answers to your what would you like to learn blog question a few weeks back, and I’ve had this book flagged per your first mention of it. What makes me buy a book? First topic. If I can see it in person before purchase, all the better. If not reviews of it. For tutorial books like this one, I really like to see it first. Then I ask these questions: Does it overview the topic or really give you clear step-by-step instructions? I’m very visual, does it give good illustrations, and if not, are the written instructions easy to follow? Will I get the use for the money out of the book?

I usually see a book reference on a web site, or google search for a particular topic for a title. Then I do an amazon search and hope they have a ” look inside” feature set up so I can “flip” through the book before I decide to purchase it. I am a HUGE online shopper! Smetimes I use they right away, sometimes I scan them then set them aside for later. I have to admit the “Encaustic Studio” is on my Amazon wish list! Hope I win it, thanks for the chance Julie!!

I love art books and can be a bit of a book whore. I am persuaded most by recommendations from people and I always look at Amazon reviews. I generally have an interest in what the book is about.
If the book was in the local library or book store I may check it out there, but in New Zealand I don’t find I have that option often for the books I like! 🙂

Of course I go by the topic, but secondly I am strongly swayed by the Amazon reviews. I haven’t been to a bookstore in an age. I nearly bought this book based upon its reviews, but didn’t because of the subject matter. I didn’t know if I could just use wax in a small way, or if I’d have to have huge vats of it simmering in my crafts room (no way!), so passed on the whole idea of it. I do have a little tool that is supposed to work with wax and I have beeswax, but I am uncertain how to use them. I don’t want TOO big of a mess or a fire! So that’s what goes through my mind when I choose a book!

There are several reasons why I buy a book. One is if it is highly recommended. The other is if I flip through and I can’t resist it. I love encaustic too but haven’t done much.

I LOVE books!!! So much that I am on a local library board! My favorite area? You got it! The art section! I used to spend many hours there! I Love how-to’s on new techniques to me! I seek out art books and research them online before purchasing them! Usually the technique or topic of the book is what intrigues me first. I then check the author.
I have been reviewing u-tubes on many wax techniques but have not ventured yet…I NEED a good book first!…then supplies…
Would LOVE this one especially because it comes with a DVD! Thanks for the opportunity on this give-away! 🙂

I buy books because I’m interested in a topic or I’ve seen something written about an author or I’ve seen a book review or (with art) if I’ve seen somthing created by the author and I like the way it looks. Would love to try this technique. I’ve always been scared off by it.

I buy a book more often when I can look through it in the store. I like being able to see it in person.

I buy a book when I am looking for something new that I have never tried. I have to see the book and thumb through it first. Ah-ha new idea the book is mine.

I purchase books based upon an interest I want to pursue or build upon. I tend to bounce around and try new things… one of the reason I love mixed media projects – it allows us to combine our love for all the good stuff out there!!
When making a purchase I usually lean towards recommendations in a blog (like yours… Thank you Julie!) or if I come across something appealing when surfing my favorite shopping sites.
I have always loved the look of encaustic art – I love, love the softness it adds to a finished project – it just pulls me in!! However I am also a little (very) intimidated. I have had this book sitting in my shopping cart on Interweave’s website for a bit. Thanks for the feedback and encouragement to take the leap! I hope one day you complete a project and share it with us 🙂 Thanks for the opportunity to win this book and if I am not the lucky duck I feel a little more certain I will complete the checkout process sooner than later – haha…

I have bought at least one book you recommended here on your blog, another few referenced by other artists in their workshops or blogs. Amazon reviews will often clinch the deal. But the cover is important too!

Thanks Julie for the opportunity to win. This is what I love about your blog…I learn something new all the time from you. I had no idea what encaustic was until today.
I love artsy/crafty books and never part with them! I love trying new things and having a book with illustrations provides me with inspiration. I think artists put their best effort in books and I am rarely disappointed. I do rely on recommendations and am glad Amazon allows you to “peek” inside the book before purchase (at least most of the books). I have an abundance of books in my “like” cart at Amazon right now, and every time I move one to the purchase cart I seem to find one more to add to my like cart.

To have a book in ones possession that has no time line of return, (ie. library or friend) and that can be taken into the studio to be studied, practiced and reused again and again is such a treat. If you’re a poor working artist to have ones own copy of a book to drool over is definitely a treat. I usually like to have a look through pages either on the internet or at the store and see if there are new techniques I haven’t tried yet or ideas that will make my paintings better, that’s usually the clincher for me as to whether I’ll purchase it or not. I’m frustrated with instructional books that only give a glimpse of their secrets and leave you wanting more so for me I really want to see that someone is going to give me the whole goods. This one looks like it covers those basis.

When I am buying a book (especially an art book) the first thing is the author. If I am interested in that person’s work or that person in any way, it’s a given I will be buying their book. Next up is if someone whose opinion I respect has suggested the book then that’s usually a second “given”! Another way to get a book is to see the book and like what I see. I am an avid reader of ALL things so it is especially fun for me to get books that are recommended to me or that I stumble upon! This encaustic book looks like a keeper!!

Before I buy a book it has to be a topic I’m curious about. If it’s a new technique from a new author I will usually read the reviews. If it’s from an author I really enjoy already, whether by a previous book or reputation or video I usually purchase the book hands down sometimes even before release date.

I would have to say I buy a book for any of the above reasons. I LOVE art books, especially ones that are very thorough with lots of step by step diagrams or photos. I will see a book advertised on Interweave or other site and I will immediately go look it up on Amazon and read the reviews if there are any and preview the book if that is available. I have even gone as far as checking my local library to see if they have it so that I can go in and actually browse through the book. If I really like it I will then purchase a copy. I also LOVE bookstores (of course, since I love books) and absolutely enjoy going in a getting a drink and plopping my butt down in the craft section and spending an hour or so leafing through books. I do this in the magazine section also and I will usually end up buying at least a few things.
This book on Encaustic painting sounds wonderful. I actually have bought some sticks to play around with and watched a couple videos from one of the sites which sells the supplies…yes MORE stuff I need to buy. But I love the look of the finished product. This book will definitely go on the “wish list”.

Encaustics have peaked my interest as well. I am starting to gather supplies to dabble in is and hope to add it as a technique to my scrapbooking.
As far as why I buy a book, it might be due to a recommendation or just simply because I was interested in it.

I buy by topic and author. If I know the author – you for example – I will buy the book. I also will buy a book if I’ve taken a class I like from the author. Recently took an online class by T. Bautista and then bought her book. Wasn’t too keen on her previous book until I went through her process with her and then there was the click. I have read books and then sought out the author to take a class with her. The truth is I buy as many books as I have dollars….LMAO then to the library

I had saw this book on the shelf at the bookstore and your post mentioned above. The subject intrigued me and intimidated me at the same time. Lately I’ve bought a few books I’ve seen on peoples blogs, but i love magazines and buy lots of those. If I see at least one thing in a book that I know I will do I’ll buy it.

I’ve admired encaustic painting and like you have a few fears about equipment and fumes. But I would still love to try it.
Being a visual person, good artwork and photos is what draws me to certain books. If the art and photos are beautiful, and it sparks my creativity, then I’m ususally hooked and purchase the book. I do the same with blogs….that’s why I’m here and following yours!

The projects shown on the cover are a definite pull. If the project(s) catch my eye along with the title, I will add it to my cart.
If I’m looking for something specific, I go by title/subject and then the author. But it depends on the instructions and I like pictures to go with the instructions. I love encaustic wax and have taken a class with Suze two years ago.

I love to flip through books and am more likely to buy a book in a bookstore than on line. Having said that, e-books and e-magz certainly have their place in my life. Thanks for the give-away.

I love a book flip thru but I am also very interested in what others have to say/recommend about a book, especially someone whose opinion I value (such as yours Julie).

I like to get my book recommendations first from bloggers who know a lot more about art than me. Next I check amazon (the best!!), look inside the book. read customer reviews (thank you to everyone who ever did this), and last look at what other customers bought. I’m currently working on art journaling with watercolors and ink and would love to expand my skill list to include encaustic techniques. Pick me!! Please.

this is an area i have longed for knowledge and inspiration. the recommendations of the bloggers has helped me decide this is truly something i can explore and delve into. i love the container concept. that concept alone is what i can take from the book and be more focused in my projects

The first thing to catch my eye when purchasing a book is the title of course and the description of what the book entails. Then, when I flip thru the pages I make the decision. With anything, (not only books) I must see what I am spending my hard earned money on.

I buy a book based on the topic and, if I’m in the book store, a flip through the book. Sometimes when I order online, I order based on a recommendation. I, too, love the look of encaustic but thought it was just too hard and material-heavy to try.

I can so relate to your feelings about encaustic! Thank your for the opportunity to win a book that may unlock the deep, dark secrets of this medium.
I generally buy books based on topic, and am sometimes prompted to investigate and then purchase a book based on a recommendation. That actually happened this week, when one of my readers left a comment on my blog and suggested a particular book. I popped on over to Amazon and placed an order right away because it seemed like a great fit.
Thanks again for offering this giveaway. :o)

As one who owns waaaaay too many art/craft books, I have made my fair share of impulse purchases…and regretted it. That said, I still buy books, but try to read reviews and the sneak peeks at Amazon.com are very helpful. I have one book on encaustics that I am probably going to sell because it is just way too technical for me. The one by Daniella sounds like it woul be more my cup of tea. Thanks for the chance to win!

I will often check a book out from the library if it’s available to decide whether I want to purchase it for my library. I do read reviews but don’t always trust what I read. I look for lots of good information on supplies and tools, clean layouts, clear instructions and lots of good process photos. I’d love to have this book! I’ve been wanting to learn encaustics for some time. Thanks!

I first check out a book after a referral. I then take a peek and see if it’s “do-able” for me. I have done a little encaustic –took a class, bought supplies…. and that’s all ! I definitly need a book ! Thanks for the chance to win this book. It sounds very “do-able”. Sounds like this book may give me the jump-start I need.

I struggle to get into a bookstore but I do attend a local crop , a lot of the crafters there are into my type of art , so I flick through there books and see what takes my fancy, I also buy a book on the recommendation of my favorite blogs.
I’ve just got a lot of encaustic supplies for my birthday, so I’m all set, I just need a little bit direction and I’ll be off, so I’ve got my fingers crossed, thank you.

Hi. Thanks for the giveaway. Love encaustic!
I frequently look up a book on Amazon and read the table of contents, and a “sample” of the book. I can ususally tell if it’s a “must have” or not. Since taste in books is so subjective, I don’t always rely on reviews.

I tend by buy books by topic, with a boost of recommendation. If I’m on the fence about a book, I’ll put it on my Amazon wishlist. If there’s a Kindle option, I lean towards buying that version, but some books just need to be held in one’s hands.

I’m an art book junkie! Flipping through the book and skimming through the contents is what sells me. I’m visual, so it must have lots of colorful pictures!

All of the above! I just love books, and I spend lots of time reading. I also spend lots of time in bookstores, browsing books online, and updating my Goodreads account. I choose books from recommendations, from those I’ve browsed in stores and online, and I buy books by authors I love and subjects I’m interested in — which is lots! I read reviews for information about what a book contains but usually not for opinion as those can vary so widely and I like to form my own, but I do read and respect the views of those who review books on the blogs I follow like yours, since it’s a pretty sure thing that if you like it, I’ll like it too.

For the most part I choose a book by the topic but I love when someone recommends the book that I know and has used it. Sometimes I buy a book on a topic bring it home and realize trying to do some of the techniques in the book is very hard mostly because the instructions are not clear.

I usually buy a book based on if I get excited with the author’s art and want to learn from him or her. Then and only then do i read reviews about it. But the last book I preordered (Flora Bowley’s) didn’t even have reviews as it wasn’t even out yet! Patsy from HeARTworks

When considering purchasing a book I use all that you’ve mentioned – I usually start looking by topic, though, when looking for a topic I’m interested in, flipping through the actual book is golden. Sometimes, though, it must be through Amazon recommendations and it’s nice that Amazon often allows for limited flipping as well.

If I am in a store and like more than 3 things in a book, I tend to buy it… other times I will buy a book based on reviews by artists I like… Thanks for the great giveaway! xoxo

Well heck – thought I commented this morning and now it is not here. Maybe I’m being shunned. In general I buy books that have a subject I’m interested in. I’m interested in a LOT of things and I have a LOT of books. I often read a book, looking for a teacher or take a class with someone to see if I want their book.

I buy books for all the reasons you listed. I really like to take a look at a portion first. So the book previews at Amazon, Google Books or Interweave are invaluable. In the end, how well researched the topic and the author’s style of presenting and explaining techniques, use of many clear, large photos illustrating techniques has to grab me as “This is a book I have to buy!”

I buy art books to learn new techniques. Funny, I just bought a new today. I want to learn more about mixed media journaling. I want to learn about what products to use and how to use them. I page through a book, and look for encouragement, techniques and great examples with explanations of what products were used.

For a crafty/arty book, I must do a flip through. It needs to be something special and unique for me to part with some “georges” and it needs to be something which I probably cannot find on the internet for free, or in the library. (I LOVE libraries, and inter-library loan.)

Hi, I am a tactile person, I like to pick up a book and page through it before committing to it. The topic usually draws me to pick it up to start.

Hi Julie, I tend to buy a book if I happen to read about it in a blog, a topic, or something I’m interested in learning. I’m so new to mixed media I don’t know many of the artists’ names. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this book.
Hugs, Carmen L

I am also interested in trying this technique, but a little timid. It does involve a lot, and I’m also very clumsy. It would be great to win the book to discover more about the technique.

I’m completely baffled by the HOW of starting out with encaustics. The book and DVD look like the right way to start.

I like to hold and see a book before I buy, but I don’t get to shop at book stores much, so I’ll usually look to see if Amazon has a preview of it. Some books I buy because of the author or content. Actually it doesn’t take much to get me to buy a book. I’d love to get a copy of this, have been drawn to encaustic art for some time, but there’s no room in my art room. So I’d need a book to get me hooked. When I was a kid, I used to put paper on top of the heater in the garage and draw on it with crayons. They would melt and I guess it was very elementary encaustic art. Love the smell of melting crayons!

The cover is what usually catches my attention first but if it is a how to book it has to have really good pictures. Good written directions are great but without good pictures it just won’t work for me.

Thank you for this opportunity! Your review piqued my curiosity even more. I have never tried encaustic before. I like to have the book in hand and flip through the pages. I am a visual junkie and good pix are a must. Online flipping is OK but not as satisfying. BTW, I enjoyed your article ( with the layered monoprints demo) “be a teacher,” in the July/August CPS.

If I see an interesting craft book by an unknown author, I will probably check to see if the author has a blog. This way I can check to see if their style intrigues me and their writing style appeals. My favourite way to choose a book is on recomendation from someone who has read the book and tried some projects. I must admit you intrigued me by mentioning knitting could be combined with encaustic art. This I have to see.
If I see an interesting craft book by an unknown author, I will probably check to see if the author has a blog. This way I can check to see if their style intrigues me and their writing style appeals. I need to look at a few pages before I buy a book. I like to see the supply list too. If it is too intimidated, well… I’ve got plenty of other projects to start. I like to see supplies that I already have along with maybe a few new ones to try.
I have been dreaming about encaustic for about two years now and really want to try it, but am a little fearful I will burn my house down. Perhaps this book will be my guide and I’ll get brave.

I buy a book if it is informative and full of cool pictures of techiques.I tend to give it a second look if it has been recommended by someone who inspires me. ie I recently purchased Scraptastic following your detailed and descriptive recommendation and love it!!

I have written one post and it disappeared hopefully this one stays. I usually by a book by recommendations or topic. I like to look through the book either on line or in the store. Pictures and the ease of following the instructions is very important. I now have several artists I follow….so I am always looking for new or old publications from them. Thank you for this opportunity to throw my name in the hat for a chance to win this book. It looks like it has everything I like.

Ideally, I love to be able to look through a physical copy of a book before I buy it. Luckily I live in LA and have a fair number of art bookstore options where I can just sit and flip through new books at my leisure. In a pinch though, I’ll often check out the reviews on Amazon. And of course recommendations from friends and blogs are always great. Thanks for the chance to win, Julie!

What makes me buy a book depends on how I was introduced to it. If I’ve gone looking on my own for titles on a particular subject, a flip through the pages and/or amazon reviews will help me decide. If I’ve got a couple of options an author’s name I recognize could well be the deciding factor.
Online reviews that I’ve come across (in blogs, etc.) or other recommendations can influence me to take a further look, particularly on a topic I wasn’t necessarily looking to buy a book on. In that case I typically check Amazon for additional information as well.
Just as often though, the impetus comes from having checked the book out of the library and deciding it’s got staying power on my bookshelf. Before buying a title I’m interested in I always see if I can get it from the library first; sometimes a subject search in the catalog leads me to it or sometimes it’s piqued my interest on the shelf so I take it out for further exploration; in this instance titles and/or cover art (especially on the spine) can play a factor.

In reference to “Arts & Craft Books”, I love to buy certain creative art books when it comes to the creativity involved. The special techniques that are illustrated, the chance to see those illustrations up close. Depending on the topic that I am interested at the time of purchase, I chooses the topics I am interested in. (ie- mixed media, art journaling, scrapbooking, stamping, color…..) Each day could be different. The authors vary on the subject. Each author has their own unique style, and it depends on what I am looking for at the time. Also when it has been recommended by artists, friends, and websites, I tend to look into those books a bit more. I value certain peoples opinions on their specialties. I hate to admit this, but I rarely use Amazon, so their reviews are not any part of the formula of book choice.

Subject matter is always the catalyst for my book buying and boy have I bought a lot of art books. Then it’s the visual elements – I need lots of pictures and then even the actual physical structure of the book can tip me into a purchase – how does it feel in my hands? Is it a curl up and read sort of book or a coil-bound, easy to fold on my desk book? Actually, I downloaded The Encaustic Studio because I couldn’t wait for the book. It’s an awesome DVD chockablok full of great explanations and demos by Daniella. I’m totally inspired, got all the stuff but find that I do need the book propped open at my work table though, because I am old and can’t concentrate on the video controls while trying the techniques. Thanks Julie for this opportunity.

I know nothing about using encaustics. I have seen encaustic art however, and I’m intrigued by the primitive, earthy, texture that some artists have created in their work by using wax. I am inspired by all things visual, so when buying an instruction book, I love to see lots of photos. Clear, easy to understand instructions are a must too. I’m intrigued that a DVD is included in this book. That is a real plus! I enjoy reading Amazon reviews, but nothing seals the deal more than leafing through the actual book.

I buy books about fascinating topics that are complex enough to want to keep forever as a reference. I do want to see the credentials of the author and maybe do some research about them. I also want to see some examples and details on the format/presentation in a review. Interweave reviews are usually fun and informative and often enough to sell me on a topic of intense interest.

I’m always interested in new art techniques… so I buy books based on my technique du jour… but to meet my buying criteria, I go through a number of checklists… the book must contain step-by-step well-documented photos. Additionally, I always check out the title on Amazon, to see if it’s there with a ‘quick-look’ feature to get a feel for the contents. I also try to find it in my local library to check it out to see if it can survive my short-attention span before I purchase. If I’ve purchased from an author before, I always check out their newest books, as I’m not usually disappointed.

I loved your approach to reviewing this book. I wasn’t surprised to see your name on this blog hop, Julie! Thanks for admitting your apprehension!

I choose books for all of those reasons. A recommendation from people or blogs like you and yours is enough to make me find out more but just someone mentioning a book or author will pique my interest to check it out. I often order books through my local library to check out if I will like it before I buy. Sadly my library does not carry many modern craft books.

As a librarian I am always about the information … while I enjoy the ease of digital and e-sources sources, I love the feel of a book in my hands – would love to win this book as I am curious about this process and would love to read up on it! Thanks for your inspirational and informative blog (“inspira-formative”??)

Topic is always the #1 reason to buy a book but then if possible I like to get a sneak peek into it first before I hit buy.
I have been dying to try my hand at encaustics and have had my eye on this book!

I’m usually swayed to buy a book by its subject matter – a technique that I am wanting to learn more about. I tried my hand at encaustic once and it was a failure but it was before this new handbook – I think I am about ready to try it again since I LOVE the look it gives. In fact, I had a calendar that I loved a couple years back and when I found it in the drawer I realized that it was entirely encaustic art – that was before I knew what it was but I still loved it!!
BTW – Congrats on having your column renewed for another year – I just read your teaching column in the newest issue today – loved it!

Generally, topic is the main reason I will look through a book; there are some authors I will buy for reference. We’re on a restricted budget right now, so the book must be a “need” and not a “want.” Only a few make that cut these days!
The Encaustic Studio has been calling me from the shelves of my local bookstore. I like making books, and the thought of using encaustic techniques with books makes my heart go pit-a-pat!
thank you for the chance to win a copy of this book, Julie.

I like to see the books I buy. So first the cover has to catch my eye. Then I flip through the book to see some of the details. If I like what I see I usually purchase the book or put it on my want list. Thanks for the chance to win!

Although I love to look through a book at the book store, i buy alot of my art books from Amazon. The first thing I look at is the topic of the book, then whether or not I am familiar with the author and finally, I check out the Amazon reviews. i am greatly influenced by authors whose blogs I follow or classes I have taken. Thanks for the chance to win this great book!!

It can be for various reasons, one because the subject interests me, or if the work the author develops and like, if some friend recommended me or reviews on amazon, always learning new techniques. I also like to browse the book here but unfortunately there are not many books on mixed techniques, so the ones I have have bought through amazong.

The topic is generally the first thing that draws me to a book, and then the author, a recommendation is also helpful, but I think that the decider is being able to flick through the pages and see for myself.

I would say I buy mostly based on topic and recommendations. I think I’ve only bought fiction based on just the author (for instance because I loved their previous books), but then again if the topic doesn’t appeal…
I’m fascinated by encaustic art, but have never tried to attempt it myself. As you describe it it seems like a great place to start!

What makes me want to buy a book? Author, recommendations, honest reviews. I look for indications that a book is not just pretty pictures (unless of course, I am looking for a book of pretty pictures!) in art instruction/inspiration, I want to know that I’ll be getting information I can apply to my style of work & not a paint-by-number approach to any one particular project. Hope this helps! Love your honesty, creativity, & generous spirit. Thank you for all you add to the creative flow!

I live in a tiny NYC apartment, with not much room for books so I tend to be very choosy! If I read a good book review, I’ll go to a bookstore to flip through it, but I buy most often on Amazon or ebay which is usually cheaper.
I would love to win a copy of The Encaustic Studio because I’ve been dying to try encaustic art and find it so intimidating!

I can think of instances where every one of those reasons have been a factor in my deciding to buy a book. Seeing it and feeling it in my hands can really tip the balance though…especially if it is a visually engaging book. Reviews such as this one can also make a difference, especially if it has been a book I was already considering buying. I DO hope to add this one to my bookshelves. Thank you for your informative review and the book giveaway. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

I buy books mostly based on the author and reccomendations. With some art books, I wait until I can look at them at the bookstore or check them out at the library before I buy them. Thanks for the chance to win!

The cover draws me in , then I take time to look through the book and see if it fits what I want to do or intrigues me. I look over the table of contents next usually. Then I read the reviews and the comments usually seal the deal one way or the other. Thanks Julie for this opportunity

For art and crafts books a flip-through is an absolute must (either virtual or actual hands-on) because I relate to information visually. I like clear, uncluttered pictures and text.

I have quite a few books, and mostly bought online through Amazon. Def. the reviews make me interested, because I have bought a few that have let me down! I like to know if the book is more inspirational vs. instructional. This book would be wonderful because it is a how-to book. I am more and more drawn to encaustic- I love the way you can layer images- but am very intimidated too! Hope it comes my way!!

I buy books due to a multitude of reasons, I flip through some, I buy to learn more about a subject and I will buy at the recommendation of someone that I think has good knowledge or experience in the area.

I like to look through books and see if any of the projects inside catch my eye. I also consider the author if I’m familiar with him/her and already like their style of art.
